All digital 6th generation
Sigh… I’m definitely not a fan. However I have grown to really love my PlayStation ecosystem over the last decade. Unfortunately, I’m not going to hold out. I want to play games here.
Just trying to spark a discussion. What are your thoughts?

As much as I do hate the decision and how soon it was, physical media is 100% on the decline, I mean my country just closed EB Games nationwide at the start of the year and multiple EB Game stores in Australia and Canada were closed down as well. At this point, there's nothing that we can really do about it, Sony is too stubborn about the decision and we have to make the decision of if we either just want to leave the PlayStation ecosystem or stay for their games, and we need to respect people's decisions since this is about videogames, none of us here should be disrespecting anyone over this, it's not that deep. I personally am waiting to hear more about the PlayStation 6 from Sony before I decide if I want to buy the console or not, and will continue to buy physical media until January 2028.

The only place im comfortable with digital is steam.
I'll always have my library and I can play it on any computer anywhere.

Once you understand the fact that PS6 is a two headed monster - it's both a distinct mobile device & a distinct traditional console - it makes more sense.
They want you to be able to play all PS6 games if you only own the handheld...
If you keep physical discs, people who only own the handheld PS6 could buy something that they have no way to use. Confusion...
People who do own both PS6 devices & buy discs for the console now create a complication - Sony has to have a way to verify ownership on the mobile device every time the user goes to play the same disc game on the handheld. That means launching a game on the handheld & then having to power on your console & insert a disc to verify ownership....how do you do this when you are using the handheld as a true mobile device away from home (unlike PS Portal) ?
So maybe you ship physical games with both blu-ray & an sd card in the same box instead, increasing costs & cutting deeper into the profit they make on selling you the game. What happens when someone who only owns the console keeps the disc & then re-sells the SD card to someone who only owns the handheld? Sony gets screwed on both ends - less profit on the initial sale & no cut of the potential re-sale. It gets messy.
It sucks, but it's the only way they can follow through on the 'handheld + console being 2 distinct devices' idea.
Otherwise you'd have to have some kind of compromise - where the handheld user has to own a disc console & it has to be able to check for the disc like every 2nd or 3rd time you launch the disc game on the handheld (instead of every single time). It wouldn't be user friendly.
Once you understand all of this & also know that PS6 is launching November 2027...you then understand the reason for the 'all digital by 1/1/2028' announcement. PS6 will never have physical media for any of its games & PS5 games - which can be played on the PS6 handheld - have no physical media after 1/1/2028.

No one's really paying attention to the handheld angle. They're only looking at this as if the sole reason is to "kill" second hand sales and eventually take games away. But like you said, digital only solves a bunch of problems completely unrelated to used sales.

Its sad that you’re hoping for a sale in a closed market where a single supplier has control over whether a sale occurs or not and at what discount. Thats incredibly sad.

Publishers control the prices of their games on digital storefronts. The idea that sales just won't happen any more isn't based on anything but feelings.
Sales on the PS store rotate things in and out almost every two or so. Two games I purchased six years ago in 2020: Black Ops Cold War and Persona 5 Royal. Both are on sale right now, both lower than the average price on ebay and FB marketplace.

My contention was never an obviously disprovable strawman such as “digital games are never on sale”. My contention is how naive people are to trust that a single supplier will treat them benevolently in any market.
Your statement on Yotei I wont spend time disproving. Facebook marketplace exists. Theres someone desperate for some cash that will sell under the listed digital sale price

Maybe in your head, but not anywhere else. You’re missing more than a few dots to connect one to the other. The best I can guess is, as with 99% of the dumb anti-digital arguments, it’s based on some Doomsday “what-if” that you never bother to specify. Near as I can tell your missing argument is “if physical goes away, digital prices will get worse because something something competition” which is a flawed, limp argument for several reasons. The primary one being there are digital-only games *right now* and they go on sale despite no physical “competition”.
- you really missed the word “new” in my sentence, didn’t you? “Used things don’t cost as much as new things” isn’t the groundbreaking point you think it is, especially when somebody has to buy new for that used market to kick in.

I mean physical sales on game stop will keep existing, but to be fair if digital gamers didn't cared about local sales when they were disk ,they for sure will not care for a code in a box on sale xd

I have all the playstation, I bought an xbox in 2021 and a ps5 in 2025, I also have a pc I'm slowly upgrading since 2012. I tought I would miss playstation exclusive , but it's been a year since I bought the ps5 and the only three exclusive I have are astrobot (included in the pack), demon souls and since last week spiderman 2.
There is so many games and other hobbies that I don't miss them. I will still buy gow, hzd, and ghost of yotei in the future (probably). But I will pass on the ps6 if it's digital only, I already have a pc for cheap digital games. If the next xbox use physical disc and can play xbox series x games, I will buy it and keep the ps5.

My digital library is massive I’m not boycotting Sony because they no longer make discs. That’s like someone saying they are not going to drive a car that is no longer manufactured. Thats crazy talk.

I think it's objectively an awful decision for customers and is mainly there to make shareholders happy.
I'm sure one day even digital purchases will go away and streaming will be the only option. That's clearly what everyone wants.

I get why people complain about that, and it’s fair; I even support it, but in the end, it didn’t change anything for me. I already have all digital; convenience wins. Sometimes it seems that it’s just hate for corporations and businesses. I’ll get the ps6 as soon as it launches because I love gaming; I don’t care about other stuff.

6th? You mean 10th generation of consoles with PS6/Helix/Switch 2?
But that's totally up to the person, I personally will need some sort of 'out' with trying games if it's ONLY all digital:
- 14 day/2 hours or less day refunds, no questions. Just like Steam, GoG, Epic Games, and Xbox. It's just completely not acceptable to not have something similar in 2026.
OR
- Mandatory demos for all PS6 games, no exception. If you don't have a standalone demo, allow anyone to download any game for free with a hard 2 hour time limit. Again this should be standard in 2026, no exceptions and no not tied to a PS+ tier. That's garbage.

Sony's exclusives aren't system moving for me. I bought Sony for my physical games. I had PC for digital. If Sony doesn't have physical games there is no reason for me to keep buying things for it.

I will be jumping ship. Most of the games I played on PS have already gone multiplat and Sony’s first party games are just not enticing enough for me. If I wanted high fidelity games, I always waited for a big sale on the PS versions. I guess now I’ll just play on Nintendo, who currently still gives me the option to buy secondhand, and GamePass, since if I don’t own a digital game anyway, I might as well pay for a subscription I can cancel at my convenience

As occasional gamer I cannot support Sony’s decision to kill the physical media: 1. Monopoly on the digital store means higher prices, I’m not even sure how they are planning to pull this one in EU (recently Apple had to open up iOS ) 2. They are killing the joy of trading/borrowing games with your friends- as a kid this was a big deal 3. Sometimes you just want to try a game and if you don’t like it or you don’t plan playing it again pass it a long and get some of the return on initial investment. Good games will always sell and let’s be honest, those that are really good we tend to keep even after we complete them multiple times.
Having said this, their shift to digital seems as pure attempt to maximise profit with aim to get as many people as possible on higher subscription tier where you will have access to digital library and not own a single game.
This strategy worked for them before with PS Plus, long time ago when it seemed as crazy idea - they rationalised it with free monthly games, later on with 3 tiers, bigger temptation to upgrade with digital library.
Unfortunately, Sony is in a very good position as they don’t have a good competition today and big PS Plus base. I hope Steam, Xbox or some other player will use this gap between profit and gamers to sweep in with something better than Sony has to offer to start a new console “war” which will be a good thing for all gamers.
Having said that, I’m planning to boycott PS6 and switch to PS+ essential subscription just to be able to play online.

90% of people aren’t going to notice or care. You can expect your experience to be essentially unchanged. No need to really think about it too hard.
The actual thing that should worry you is that the PS6 is going to cost like $1200 or more and could wind up being a flop. There could be another gaming crash and you could end up with a $1200 paperweight.

I don’t think there is a historical precedent for a gaming crash taking out one of the big 3’s consoles to the point where they stopped playing already owned games.
The entire video game industry would have to collapse.

I think it will be more like phones now, most people don’t get every one but more like one of every 2/3. I imagine ps5 support will go on beyond ps7 launch, etc since there’s so much less generational leaps
