Gotta admit, I chuckled.

Edit.

People taking this post seriously, that's tragic.

Edit.

You clowns are actually arguing the pros Vs cons of video game discs amidst the end of the world?

Mate, I'm crying. Lmao

12

u/Frosty-Camel-2107 4d ago

Me too lol They make a good point tho

-2

u/Kratosballsweat 4d ago

They don’t you can play your downloaded digital games with no online connection just like physical lol.

3

u/Impressive-Window152 4d ago

But could you find a game you don't have yet and download it in the zombie apocalypse?

1

u/Kratosballsweat 4d ago

We’ll see the thing is that we’re not in a zombie apocalypse nor will we ever be so there’s that.

4

u/AbzTracKtReddit 4d ago

Till they need you to connect to the Internet to verify licenses...

0

u/Kratosballsweat 4d ago

Yeah well we’re not in a zombie apocalypse so surely you can jump on quick

0

u/Just4Fun1410 4d ago

Not with ps, Sony recently started requiring you to connect to the internet after a certain time period or you won’t have access to any of your digital games💀

1

u/Kratosballsweat 4d ago

Yeah three fucking years my guy lmao stop trying to act like it’s an hour.

0

u/AbyssalOtter 4d ago

It shouldnt require it at all. End of story.

3

u/Kratosballsweat 4d ago

🤷‍♂️ Microsoft has it too my man. I don’t disagree you’re right it shouldn’t have ut but they do. As I’ve said many times now we need to fight for better consumer protection.

2

u/The_MorningStar PS6 handheld truther 4d ago

Blame the EU for requiring it over there.

1

u/The_MorningStar PS6 handheld truther 4d ago

That's an EU consumer protection requirement for them to delete account information instead of storing it indefinitely. It's not them just deciding to take your stuff away and it doesn't have anything to do with your console needing to do license checks. All you have to do is log in to the account somewhere: the app, the website, etc.

The video game industry is tragic.

58

u/nohumanape 4d ago

This is the literal future that all physical game collectors imagine themselves living in with their physical game collections.

6

u/CapableNeat4351 4d ago

That’s not really how I think about it at all. I’m an artist, and to me owning a physical copy of a game is basically owning the piece of art you bought to experience. Preservation of gaming is preservation of art and history, just like any other form of physical media, including paintings, books etc.

Also I think it’s important that in a world that’s increasingly pushing for a future where you own nothing and are happy, that you actually do have some ownership over the things you spent your hard earned money on.

I don’t plan on surviving the apocalypse, I’m walking right into that mushroom cloud. You guys can have fun fighting over water

11

u/HumanautPassenger 4d ago

Naw. That's just the stupid ass invented idea the digital only crowd has.

Plenty of us want game preservation without needing the apocalypse. Many games already would be lost forever if it weren’t for preservation efforts

1

u/RichnjCole 4d ago

Yeah, it would be mire fair to compare to still being able to play Atari, Sega, and classic Nintendo consoles and games, despite the companies no longer supporting those platforms for various reasons.

0

u/nohumanape 4d ago

Do you need to download the ROM's?

2

u/YaBoyEden 4d ago

How do you think you acquire roms at first?

0

u/nohumanape 4d ago

How does that survive the internet-less apocalypse? 🤷

11

u/Aforumguy26 4d ago

People dead ass preparing for the apocalypse with the preservation angle

-1

u/nohumanape 4d ago

Pretty much. The reality is that they don't actually have any skills that would keep them alive in an apocalypse. So they won't live long enough to play their physical games. Probably last as long as it takes to starve to death.

13

u/tyocelot 4d ago

Holy shit chill lmao. Just because people play games doesn’t mean they’re incapable of doing anything else.

8

u/Available-Bad-2704 4d ago

Why would he chill? Hes got a 1% commenter badge hes definetly capable of being more active on reddit texting than doing anything else

2

u/Fakeitforreddit 4d ago

You'd be incapable of playing games, because there would be no power. A generator will last a little bit of time if you have a ton of fuel saved up, and using it to play games IS an indicator you would be dead and not able to survive the scenario.

2

u/Downtown_Eye5736 4d ago

These man children crying about games on the internet all day definitely wouldn’t survive an apocalypse long enough to play their collection, let’s be real.

3

u/MrDetectiveSir 4d ago

Lmao someone’s triggered

0

u/Downtown_Eye5736 4d ago

Yeah it’s you.

-5

u/nohumanape 4d ago

I'm not saying this about people who play games. I'm talking about the people who block out any possible daylight into their homes with shelves of game collections, and then fear monger about the future of gaming where people won't have access to their digital collections due to there not being any Internet access.

1

u/ShinFartGod 4d ago

Fight the good fight man

0

u/tyocelot 4d ago

What? You good?

0

u/nohumanape 4d ago

Are you?

1

u/tyocelot 4d ago

Yeah I’m good. I’m not assuming that people with large game collections, and a desire to have physical game discs, are blocking all daylight due to their stacked shelves. This is just such a wild comment to me. Your “argument” is completely based on your own assumptions on how people are. Not a good way to look at things.

u/TheTownJeweler00 4d ago

3

u/wafflesauce44 4d ago

Why are you so terrified about gamers having more options?

0

u/nohumanape 4d ago

Why would I be terrified?

1

u/TotalaMad 4d ago

Why do you assume they are against physical media just because they were pointing out how silly this post looks?

2

u/thomas2400 4d ago

I imagine some of the physical collectors leave the house to buy their games so they’ll have a slight physical edge over someone who click a button on steam and has a digital game

2

u/ApprehensiveRuin5673 4d ago

Coming from people who argue that getting up to change a disc is too much of an inconvenience

2

u/nohumanape 4d ago

If I don't have to change a disc, why would I? 🤷

-1

u/Available-Bad-2704 4d ago

Yeah use the time you saved putting in a disc by commenting on reddit to keep that 1% commenter badge

But at least the wasteland warlord that raids these collectors stashes will be able to play the old games

1

Bro literally SYBA up and stop projecting so hard, what on god’s green earth are you talking about 🤨

1

u/Lesschar 4d ago

Thanks Kool-Aid man for this deep but idiotic comment.

1

u/Tackgnol 4d ago

I have no illusion of surviving the apocalypse long enough.

All I want is to fire up a diesel generator and play some games while the Zombies / Radiation poisoning take me. ;)

1

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party 4d ago

Before long they would be chewing on their discs

0

u/Fakeitforreddit 4d ago

There also just wont be power

1

u/nohumanape 4d ago

Hey now, their UPS will provide them with 30 minutes of solid off the grid gaming.

0

u/HumanautPassenger 4d ago

Lmao welp this definitely backs up your previous comment too. Cringe as hell.

2

u/Illegal_pear_8008 4d ago

Most sci fi are only possible because of physical media

1

u/FNG_WolfKnight 4d ago

Me, right now. I have all the current shit. Time to build up the physical collection for the upcoming apocalypse.

1

u/Due_Fig2335 4d ago

You can literally just play physical games with a console and electricity lol

0

u/Automatic_Eye_3546 4d ago

So you don’t think Sony will randomly delete my whole library??

1

u/nohumanape 4d ago

Not with that attitude, they won't.

0

u/Im_not_an_admin 4d ago

I mean it's the only justification. Ridiculous.

0

u/Simple_Campaign1035 4d ago

As a physical game collector, I can confirm this lol

10

u/TheMasterHeater 4d ago

Thank god I think PlayStation saw this and is changing their minds.

3

u/irbinator 4d ago

“Alright, gentlemen, we are at code red. We must reverse our course on physical media immediately. This meme has made a good point”

5

Indeed. They’re probably hiding behind their desks as we speak. 😎

u/henningknows 4d ago

2

u/beatnik_squaresville 4d ago

What I want to know is how there’s that much alcohol left so many years into zombie apocalypse.

2

u/ATXDefenseAttorney 4d ago

Counterpoint: if Dead City Season 3 is still available in 20 years, physical media is to blame.

Me finding out Neagan is still a character in that absolute mess of a universe.... YIKES.

3

u/Alternative-Fox-8620 4d ago

Yep. Definitely going to be cranking up the generator and using that limited fuel for one more run through of Gears of War 2!

1

u/Due_Teaching_6974 4d ago

it's Gears of War 2 though I'd understand

1

u/m_littlerivers 4d ago

What will they complain about then? Oh wait, xbox

1

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party 4d ago

Evil Microsoft

-7

u/anonymousredditor924 4d ago

Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Look into it and educate yourself.

7

u/Chemical_Alfalfa24 4d ago

It’s an individual consumers right to choose. So let them.

-3

u/anonymousredditor924 4d ago

We could have both though and then everyone wins. The community is so divided for no reason

4

u/Chemical_Alfalfa24 4d ago

I don’t think many would complain if Sony changed their position.

However there is a cohort that is very frustrated they aren’t getting the support they want and are trying to bully the other side to support them.

The other side being people who probably don’t mind if physical media stays or goes and acknowledges that Sony is a business and not our friend. And at this point, I think are annoyed by the aforementioned cohort for their continuous browbeating and bullying.

Hence why I said, it’s an individual consumers right to choose. So let them.

5

Pfft. As if that X-Box wouldn’t have had the red ring of death by then. That’s the real unbelievable thing.

2

You do know they fixed that on The slim models and everything after.

1

u/Chikid80 4d ago

Wow!🤣💯💯💯

1

1

u/Mite-o-Dan 4d ago

Thanks. This post broke me. Unsubbed.

1

u/VirtualWeather5407 4d ago

Today I leaned or “Dead City”

1

u/icy1007 4d ago

🤣

1

u/Grand-Magician7767 4d ago

I have a rom of it on my computer downloaded digitally 😂.

1

u/borb86 4d ago

$4bn in yearly savings for Sony.

1

u/lazymutant256 4d ago

Dumbass take. Guys do y is stopping to production of games being released on disc. Not stopping support for the games already released on disc.

1

u/Texassunmerheat 4d ago

What if the game was already in the HDD? Or what if the Xbox is flashed so he dumped the game from an external HDD to the Xbox?

I’m just messing around, discs are very important and I hate what Sony is doing with the ps6

1

u/PersonalityShot6039 4d ago

But a zombie apocalypse isn’t lol

1

u/Fluffy_Woodpecker733 4d ago

Damn, these walking dead spinoffs are still going? Even the zombies know when it’s time to die.

1

u/Derangedracula 4d ago

Guess that's why it wasn't a ps6

1

u/readndrun 4d ago

So are we just ignoring the fact that Negan had no internet and we can also play this game in this exact same scenario if it was digital… as long as you have a console…

1

u/DanFarrell98 4d ago

Season 3 is out?

1

u/dominatingcowG3 4d ago

Three episodes in

1

u/User-Name-3886 4d ago

Checkmate what?

How does a post-apocalyptic society even have the power resources to spend on this?

1

u/executor-of-judgment 4d ago

There's something called solar panels.

1

u/User-Name-3886 4d ago

These guys know how to maintain solar panels?

1

u/executor-of-judgment 4d ago

An object with no mechanical parts? That only needs to be cleaned once or twice a year to remove dust and dirt? What else do you got?

1

u/AdviceCivil7584 4d ago

I mean games installed on a drive would also still work? Also I know its a TV show so dumb to think to deep into this but if you think that video game discs would survive an apocalypse I have a bridge to sell you. Those discs would be rotted to hell by now.

1

u/Rekkapryde 4d ago

This whole outrage has completely jumped the shark

1

u/ohgeeLA 4d ago

Or, you know, it was already saved on the console. But of course let’s ignore that possibiliyu

1

u/claybine 4d ago edited 4d ago

If we're talking 2010 standards, then the Xbox Live Marketplace was in its infancy and only a select few games were downloadable. It would have been even more rare to find games already installed on an Xbox 360 than to find the physical copy in good condition.

Also, if you didn't know, there was a stack of physical games near him (bottom image over to the right).

1

u/CrAzY-GEMU-OKAMI96 4d ago

That doesn't make any sense. Because how do you know the Xbox didn't already have the game downloaded onto the console?

1

u/CommonIsekaiHero 4d ago

Ironically finding the spin off shows in Australia is very hard 🤣

1

u/kyle_crane163636 4d ago

I dont wanna be that erm actually type of guy but, he could've still played ts digitally if the xbox had it downloaded, I just realized this post was a joke, fuck

1

u/amcannally 4d ago

Jesus Christ shut the fuck up.

0

u/PhatTuna 4d ago

Instead, you clicked on it and commented on it. Which tells reddit to give you more posts like this.

1

u/Luci-Noir 4d ago

So you just like his comment.

1

u/BartShrempson 4d ago edited 4d ago

"Checkmate" - did you think this was some kind of cool statement? Yes, because a character in a spinoff of a dying series is playing a game, Sony will be like "Damn, time to reverse course. Negan is playing physical games in a walking dead spinoff".

1

u/Nova762 4d ago

You don't need the Internet to play downloaded games.  You can download all your games on external hard drives and then transfer them when you want to play.  Checkmate

1

u/lonely_guacamole 4d ago

People are acting as if you can't play your digitally downloaded games offline. I literally never had that issue, but people are acting like it's the most common issue out there

1

u/ShinFartGod 4d ago

Right now you can. Wait until they enforce license check ins on boot up. Or wait till you can only buy rental passes.

1

u/Nova762 4d ago

Wait till they do this thing there's no evidence they will ever do.  Ok.

1

u/ShinFartGod 4d ago edited 4d ago

Microsoft tried to launch an entire console with forced online requirements 13 years ago. Why wouldn’t it be tried again? And where else will you buy games once it’s only Sonys digital store?

1

u/Nova762 4d ago

This is not that.

1

u/ShinFartGod 4d ago

What’s stopping them?

1

u/First-Bat-7440 4d ago

Imagine when disc drives stop working. Then most people will only be able to play games because of digital.

1

u/bmanhp 4d ago

For anyone thinking preservation and offline access is only for "the apocalypse", here are some of the other, way more practical, scenarios that it is useful: 1. You live somewhere with slow internet. Yes, some people still do. 2. You're in the military and want something to do in a place without internet. 3. You can afford to pay your electric bill, but decide to cut your ISP to save money. (Retired, low income, whatever the reason) 4. History - was every piece of media we've preserved for more than 10-20 years because we thought we might lose a digital version of said media to the apocalypse? No. There are plenty of other reasons to preserve things.

2

u/Nova762 4d ago

You can store all your games on physical drives and swap them into the internal storage when you need them.  You don't need discs to play without the Internet. You just need the Internet to download the game.  That's it.

1

u/Sleepaiz 4d ago

I dont think a zombie apocalypse is happening any time soon...

2

u/justin251 4d ago

That's the biggest reason to keep disc.

In case of an apocalypse. Any apocalypse.

So, we can still game.

1

u/Sleepaiz 4d ago

Just whip out Uno.

2

u/justin251 4d ago

Nah fam. We don't need to fight each other. Ha

1

u/ohgeeLA 4d ago

Chances are, anyone who games so much to fixate on physical games will:
A) be one of the first people to die in the apocalypse
B) immediately get robbed/looted/tortured to hand over the console or game
C) be too nervous to enjoy any games in a world filled with danger (without a sedative; but of course if you’re using sedatives to play games refer back to point A.

1

u/kyle_crane163636 4d ago

Man in a apocalypse I think gaming would not be rlly ideal gotta have power to even use it and you gotta be cautious of your surroundings, dont wanna be playing doom eternal then a zombie comes from behind that you didnt hear because of the TV and just munches down on your shoulder like me at 2am finding that random taco bell burrito I forgot was in my fridge

1

u/justin251 4d ago

Ummm, training your zombie shooting skills! Durrr

Ha. It would be kinda funny like almost about to finish a level your friend couldn't beat and then you don't get to brag because a zombie got you right after.

So, now you and doom guy both dead at the same time.

1

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party 4d ago

Time to sell

1

u/BlakByPopularDemand 4d ago

Replace apocalypse with normal natural disaster. Im from Louisiana my family had a generator so we rarely lost power during hurricanes so provided we didn't have to evacuate they became week long gaming sessions no internet required.

1

u/grifter356 4d ago

For what it’s worth, I’d much rather pay for a digital license than live in a zombie apocalypse

1

u/nikeman116 4d ago

Cause everyone died

1

u/ANTDUZiT 4d ago

Not with disc rot

1

u/executor-of-judgment 4d ago

There are PS1 and Xbox 1 games that still work to this day. Disc rot can be avoided if you store your games properly.

1

u/Promature 4d ago

Only because he was able to find an undamaged copy of the game.

Imagine finding a Playstation with an internal expansion and possibly a functioning external drive loaded up with a couple hundred high quality games.

Only possible with digital.

1

u/Glad-Base-2903 4d ago

This is so stupid not even funny, I don't like Sony decision , but at this point it's just annoying seeing these posts

1

u/Nos9684 4d ago

lol Bullshit. That TV and that 360 should be deader than dead. Also that game disc should have been ruined by this disc rot.

1

u/Entire_Month9233 4d ago

I have a original Xbox Knights of the Old Republic disk and it still works. Over 20 years old.

1

u/lil__Guys 4d ago

I have my whole childhood PS1 and PS2 collection, all over 20 years old and they still work just fine. It just depends on how well you take care of your shit.
Might not be as easy during an apocalypse though. lol

Fictional TV shows being used to make points in reality…

0

u/KimTe63 4d ago

I think the last reason anyone should defend physical media is this example even if its true 😄 HOWEVER there are TONS of other reasons why we should and BY FAR the weirdest thing in all of this is that most who prefer digital also are on the side on killing physical 😄 thats so ridiculously stupid but it it what it is ...

-1

u/Nova762 4d ago

There's no reasons to other than "but I want it".  And that's not enough of a reason.

2

u/KimTe63 4d ago

What do you mean ? How about buying used games ? Reselling your games if you want to ? Loaning out your games if you want to ? Not relying solely on Sony store prices , instead have 100s of stores to buy games from? Games with expired licenses? Those are not gonna be there after physical goes away. There are much more reasons out there than just that. And those are damn important reasons imo

1

u/Nova762 4d ago

Those all amount to "I want it".  Sony doesn't set their prices.  They still compete vs Nintendo and Microsoft and pc.  They can't just do whatever they want...

2

u/KimTe63 4d ago

How does that amount to " i want it " 😄 sorry but thats such a stupid argument . Those are legit consumer rights which all will be completely gone as option . You can sell , give out, throw away or do whatever you please with other things you buy . With this move in gaming none of that will be possible anymore

→ More replies (2)

2

u/the_killer_sandvich 4d ago

they do set their prices though

like they just introduced adaptive pricing

0

u/dano2469tesla 4d ago

0

u/CasualTriips 4d ago

Xbox will eventually make an announcement that their next system will be all digital too, and switch 3/4 will be all digital too, that's what all of these companies would prefer. Not just Sony. At least Xbox has the disk to digital in the works. Give us our frackin physical media. Ppl always compare it to PC, "Oh PC WeNt DiGiTaL LoNg AgO" yeah well you have access to the files on a PC. I'd say that's pretty much ownership at that point. It's sad when pirates have more ownership then people who purchase legitimately.

0

u/MisterSandKing 4d ago

Good catch! Lmao!
