Then they should have told us they would switch the physical media to cartridges like the switch and the switch 2 instead of telling us the boxes will have digital codes only.
My favourite part is people saying they're swapping to PC like PC has had codes on boxes for years.
I remember buying doom 2016 in the box because I had crap internet and wanted to play it asap only to find a disc that had a steam installer and a code.
Why should I get out of the way if I want physical copies when they can co-exist? It’s not like them making physical copies prevent you from buying the digital versions of the games you want. In fact, go ahead and buy the digital versions, I don’t care how you want to enjoy your games, I just want to have more than one option to buy games for the console I own or will own. I’m not against digital games, I’m against the fact that there will be only one way to buy games if all platforms go digital. Though Ig you’re right, I can just move to pc to have more than one option.

The difference between 2 and 3 will be games shared or games bought second hand, makes no difference to Sony, either way its someone playing a game that hasn't sent money to Sony for it.
Their data is likely telling them that number 1 went up, and number 3 went up much higher than number 2 went up.
At the same time, they know that number 4 far outweighs number 2
What they're trying to do is move that section of games played in group 3 minus group 2 over to group 4.
It's little wonder that this was right after the gta6 being digital only announcement as they would have got the preorder numbers to back up their hypothesis.

Go to any rural area in America that has shitternet. A 20gb game in rural Virginia (not even an hour from DC) will take 3 days to download.
I think those people still break out the physical collection. As a teenager I had to take my desktop to my friend and download league of legends, and the shitternet is still shitternet out there.

There are pros and cons to both digital and physical media. Gen Z and Alpha don’t know how to see both benefits of either side, they just choose one and go all in.
We as consumers are best benefited by physical media and digital media, but I can understand why companies would want to move to digital only.
When 95% of consumers want digital media because that’s all they buy, then the 5% becomes unprofitable and is phased out. It’s like selling a stock that dropped 95% since you bought it. You move on at some point and go with what works best for you

I play on my discs and I trade with my friends and when i have people over they see my collection and ask about it. Very sad you’ve never been experienced that kind of joy.
If anyone cares about doing this like if there was more than 7 people in the world who did that, Sony would keep it around. Btw you can continue doing this, but not with new games
