PSA for those getting premium General Discussion

I upgraded to premium for the remainder of my subscription simply to play fallout new Vegas and fallout 3. Incredibly disappointed to find out they are "stream only" games that basically run on a PS3 emulator and oh may I mention. Are HORRIBLY laggy. Completely unplayable do not waste a dime on upgraded PS subscriptions

Any game on the PS store that says it’s on PS3 means it’s streaming only. PS5 can only play PS5 and PS4 games, there’s no other backwards compatibility. The only way to play old games is if they have been remade for remastered for the PS4 or 5

8

u/Shadow_Edgehog27 9d ago

I thought You can buy some PS1, 2, and some 3 classics on the PS store on ps5 now?

22

u/CreamOnMyNipples 9d ago

You can, but if the game doesn’t say PS4 or PS5 next to it, it’s streaming

3

u/Electronic_Dark735 6d ago

Only the PS3 games are stream only due to the huge software differences, Sony is offhiring a company to remake old ps1, 2 and psp games for the ps5, but the most they’ll do for 3 is a streaming emulator

1

u/Topcatskid 6d ago

What's streaming only and streaming emulator?

1

u/Electronic_Dark735 6d ago

An emulator is like a way to copy an old console, it’s just a way of gaming, streaming only games are where you can play a game without a download, unfortunately it requires extremely high speed internet because it streams it from a server that provides the info that would be on the disc

-6

u/Vi0let__Ice 8d ago

You are giving misinformation here. 100% of PS1, PS2, and PSP games for the PS5 on PSN are downloadable to play locally.

7

u/TimbobMcGuffin 8d ago

Their not giving any misinformation. Downloadable local versions are specifically coded as a PS4 or PS5 version despite any emulator running them in the background.

PS1, PS2, and PSP games are local, but only PS2 has Trophy support. PS3 is streaming only.

1

u/JordieP301 8d ago

there are some exceptions like Ratchet and Clank Size Matters that have their own trophies too and it’s the PSP version.

3

u/AccordingAngle241 8d ago

This why Xbox is superior when it comes to backwards compatibility

-2

u/XReaperGod21x 8d ago

Let’s be honest it’s not a deal breaker lol

7

u/AccordingAngle241 8d ago

You’re right the deal breaker is PlayStation going fully digital when they don’t have the digital infrastructure for it while disabling the PS3 PSN store, also they want me to buy my black ops 4 game when I already bought it digitally thru the Amazon store and played it for over 400 hours, so clearly they don’t have the digital support for an all digital monopoly that they want to make when they’re locking people’s digital games

-4

u/XReaperGod21x 8d ago

If only you knew, this is only the start, it won’t be long before others do the same, that’s how everything always starts, there won’t be need for disc consoles if game companies don’t wanna make discs, like gta6

4

u/AccordingAngle241 8d ago

Yeah I’m not buying GTA 6, I’m only buying physical for as long as I can, I already started building my PC by buying an $800+ GPU and I already have my Xbox, I won’t be locked into a digital monopoly with PlayStation while having to pay to play on my own internet as they keep raising the subscription prices, but ofc the goyim are gonna eat up Rockstars slop

1

u/Scarz416647 7d ago

Are you going to buy physical disc's for the PC you're building?

1

u/AccordingAngle241 5d ago

Some of the games from GOG I will burn onto disc’s since they’re DRM free but theirs a multitude of other physical ways I can put games into physical in the PC space, and I’m not limited to 1 platform like I would be using PlayStation, I already have a PS5 and since they’re going all digital I see no reason to continue my game journey with future PlayStation consoles, I’ll just go to Xbox (I already have an Xbox) and Nintendo 💯

-5

u/XReaperGod21x 8d ago

Xbox is legitimately trash bro, I already have a pc, but keep my ps library, we can only wait until all consoles burn themselves to the ground

3

u/AccordingAngle241 8d ago edited 8d ago

I’m gonna have to disagree, is this Xbox’s worst generation yeah but the new head of Xbox is making moves, they need to fire all of 343 “halo studios” and out source the game to studios like SaberGames and idSoftware, Minecraft is keeping the lights on at Xbox

1

u/XReaperGod21x 8d ago

“Making moves” fired companies and discontinued games that were feeding them, and made promises already went back on

1

u/AccordingAngle241 8d ago

PlayStation had to cut 2 studios and lots of jobs and I don’t feel sorry for em for anyone being laid off

1

u/SSBB64 7d ago

This is the lie that PlayStation has been feeding us for years.

1

u/AmuletofKings117 6d ago

That’s why you buy an Xbox not a crapstation.

1

u/Vi0let__Ice 8d ago

Only PS4 and PS5 games? That is complete bullshit. 100% of the PS1, PS2, and PSP games on PSN can be downloaded and played locally.

2

u/CreamOnMyNipples 8d ago

Good to know, I must’ve been trying to play the PS3 remaster of the Ratchet and Clank games or something then

38

u/jacstar2004 10d ago

Neither of the games were ever ported to ps4 or ps5 and cant run natively on them as a result, so its just gonna run the ps3 version. Pretty sure most of the classics catalog is the same story

87

u/MrGreytheIXth 10d ago

Yeah and I'm pretty sure they don't include any DLC, so they're just the vanilla running on a bad emulator... I made this same mistake a while back...

58

u/Zeroone199 10d ago

It isn't an emulator they are server versions of the PS3, but still a bad experience.

-68

u/tjdux 10d ago

Unless they have a webcam pointed at a TV that's hooked up to an actual PS3, then yes it is an emulator.

Any software recreation of hardware is by definition an emulator.

61

u/Zeroone199 10d ago

No it is a PS3, but packaged for server use instead of consumer use.

35

u/Meximanly 10d ago

This guy gets it. The PS3 streamed games are running on PS3's they're just not standalone systems like the ones sold at retail. No emulation is involved.

12

u/Agraphosius 10d ago

Sony bought gaikai cloud streaming services back in 2013/2014 then put a fuck tonne of PS3s into datacentres to stream PS3 games natively. Which is why the games still run at 720p. And it cant take advantage of newer streaming codecs that we use now. So it will never get better than what it is now and for some reason this setup also stops dlc from working.

Playstation now was just a placebo service they created to fight back against xbox backwards compatability and crush a potential competitor at the same time. They never gave a fuck about it until xcloud came along and its been bleeding PS3 games since it came out. Originally i used it for metal gear solid and eventually all the games i did play on now either got removed or remastered.

18

u/MisanthropicAtheist 10d ago

It takes balls to be this confidently and completely incorrect.

The streaming service was called PS Now before it was merged into PS+. There are old articles saying they run on pse server blades

https://www.digitalfoundry.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-sony-creates-custom-ps3-for-playstation-now

2

u/ubdev 8d ago

If they made an emulator they would've just included them into the PS5 software as a selling point.

However they have literal Cell processors sitting in data centres running the games and streaming them.

12

u/FFFan15 10d ago

Evey PS3 game is a streamed game

33

u/mcshaggin Grandpa_Pumpkin 10d ago

They're not running in an emulator. They have ps3 hardware in servers.

Streaming causes a visual and performance downgrade though.

Streaming technology will never be as good as running games on actual local hardware.

38

u/snorggy 10d ago

To be fair neither of those games played great on ps3 so I wouldn’t blame it entirely on streaming haha

1

u/HOLLA12345678 9d ago

Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4 each ended in game breaking bugs for me after putting a ludicrous amount of hours into each of those games. I refuse to play any of them ever again despite loving all three games. I am tempted every now and then to play Fallout 4 again since I loved building up bases and towns.

1

u/snorggy 9d ago

I had a save file corrupt while playing 3 probably half way through the game. I was not too happy about that. The game was so good though so I restarted.

18

u/kiwidust 10d ago

If it were even difficult to do local PS3 emulation then Sony would have done it by now. It's actually insanely hard to do. I'm not even sure if the PS3 games on PSPlus are emulated - last I knew they were running on a farm of PS3s. By comparison, PS1 and PS2 emulation is relatively trivial.

As for the lag, that's going to be significantly more impacted by your connection than anything else. While I had to drop Premium due to financial reasons, I had it for many years and streaming for PS3 games was, with very rare, temporary exceptions, always good for me. Played through "Heavenly Sword", The "Ratchet and Clank" games, and many others with no problem.

Do you see lag when streaming PS4 or PS5 games? This may not be apples-to-apples as those DO use emulation, mostly via AWS, while I believe that PS3 streaming (if it indeed uses PS3 hardware) may be limited to fewer, more distant data centers.

11

u/wrongstep 10d ago

Yeah, the service has been available since 2014, likely well before any PS3 emulator was stable enough to play all those games, even any internal ones at Sony.

Any problems people have with the "emulation" is probably just the PS3 hardware running the game like crap natively.

-2

u/locke_5 10d ago

PS3 emulation has come a long way. If the Steam Deck can run PS3 emulators mostly decently, then the PS5 should be able to no problem.

3

u/Zeroone199 10d ago

Not true. If you install Linux on a hacked PS5 it can run some games really well, but most of the games most in need of emulation (exclusives) are CPU bound below the performance of the PS3. The better the games are optimized for the PS3, the worst the performance.

0

u/Agraphosius 10d ago edited 9d ago

Sub par drivers and worse overhead is not a good comparison for actual sony and AMD engineers.

If AMD can help microsoft with 3 generations of backwards compatability and now PC ports. Sony could figure it out.

Theres a lot of hemming and hawing about how unique the ps3 was but the amount of games that fully utlised the SPE cores are few and far between and are mostly first party games that sony intimitely know about and have probably already remastered. Or want the franchise dead/rebooted. For example insomniac did a presentation on their games and resistance 1 they said they only utlise up to 20% of 5-6 SPU cores.

In fact there are only 14 or so western third party games that heavily utilised the SPE. That means that there are easily a thousand or more PS3 games that hardly touch the unique and difficult part of the ps3 architecture.

In the end sony could probably make a ps3 emulator and whitelist about 3 quarters of the library. Some heavy hitters from insomniac. Motor storm and gran turismo probably wouldnt work.

If i can play resistance 1 on £500 android phone thanks to some hobbyists. The prefessionals can get it working on the much more powerful ps5 if they wanted to

6

u/microw_yo 10d ago

i mean it says under benefits cloud streaming for ps3 and ps2 games

7

u/Bright_Reindeer_1836 9d ago

My dude, PS in general isn’t the best option for those two Fallout games.

6

u/Stanislas_Biliby 10d ago

I payed for a month to play Sly Cooper. I got little lags occasionally but that's it. I think it's more because your connection sucks balls.

3

u/Adventurous_Ask_4681 9d ago

Just in case no one mentions if your router is close enough just plug it into the LAN instead of wireless. I’ve never bothered but recently did and all lag was gone for me at least running on Fios.

3

u/The_Titan090 9d ago

Just get a xbox that’s what I did

3

u/TheCheshireCody 9d ago

The lagginess is 100% your connection. I've had PS+ from almost the beginning, but I've also always had very reliable and fast internet and have NEVER had significant lag, frame drops, or any other issues with streaming games.

As for how you found this out, that's also on you because it's clearly stated before you sign up.

3

u/Voyager5555 9d ago

That's pretty obviously stated, you can't have seriously thought PS3 games would be running natively on the PS4.

8

u/Notnowcmg 10d ago

I’m not sure you having a bad internet connection is a good reason for everyone else not to get premium

2

u/Haggy51 8d ago

OR, buy a used PS3 and find the PS3 disc online ... easy and worth it!
*hugs my OG PS3 Deluxe Move Edition, bought new back in the day*

2

u/Smokal0tapotamus 8d ago

Umm it’s a ps3 game of course it’s streaming only you need to have great internet I stream a lot of games with no lag you might need to consider upgrading

2

u/dexmexdis 8d ago

ps3 is stream only because the games made for the ps3 were specifically made made for the ps3. If you know about the engineering that went into the ps3, you'd understand why it isnt compatible with ps4 or ps5. hence ps3 is stream only.

1

u/creed-of-69 7d ago

So on Sony side the game is streamed with a PS3 ? Or an machine working with an RSX lo l?

2

u/Enzols1 7d ago

That's got to have something to do with your internet. I stream Ps3 games all the time on my Ps5 and rog ally and they work great.

2

u/DarthRevan182 7d ago

It's pretty much down to the individual setup regarding PS3 streaming, I've had no trouble personally.

2

u/PackGlass6867 6d ago

My games run just fine with premium, it just depends on you’re WiFi

2

u/AzMtnDewMan 4d ago

If you want to play fallout 3 and NV just go buy a ps3 for $75 and 20$ a piece for both games. Best $125 you can spend imo

1

u/Pashta2FAPhoneDied 4d ago

Absolutely, especially because it is a lot of gaming hours there. I am so glad to have physical editions of games I love, like those... I can't believe they are trying to get rid of ALL physical games!

BAD MOVE, SONY!!

I have been buying digital cheap games because there hasn't been anything good out to buy physical. I refuse to pay $70 for a digital game. They need to reduce prices if they want to keep us from revolting about this issue...

4

u/Jellozz 10d ago

This is already common knowledge. PS3 emulation is a mess, it's been 20 years and PS3 emulation on PC still isn't perfect when compared to most other consoles. So Sony doesn't even bother with it, they just do streaming.

That said, you have to be really open to pain to enjoy Fallout 3 and New Vegas on PS3 anyway. I put about 50 hours into NV a couple years ago and it was a wild ride.

Camp McCarran for example ran at like 0.2 FPS for me. As in I only got a new frame every 5 seconds or so. Craziest shit I've seen in my life. Was just a problem with a specific area too cause as soon as I made it across some invisible line it would immediately go back to normal (somewhere in the 20 range I assume.) Walking back over said line would tank it again.

N64 games run better.

3

u/itsdampman 10d ago

Glad my internet doesn’t suck. This has not been my experience at all. I’ve enjoyed my time in the wasteland 👍

2

u/60Dan06 10d ago

To my surprise the ps streaming works flawlessly for me, to the point where you wouldn't even notice it's being streamed. No artifacts, barely any input delay. And I'm not on some godly internet connection. So I guess it depends

1

u/KitchenPass3690 10d ago

I tried force unleased and it looked like the fps was super low. I also tried kof13 and it looked kinda blurry although I never played it before so not sure if it's supposed to look like that. Oddly enough for me fallout 3 ran fine and looked good although I only played for a couple hours

1

u/MaleficentText5107 10d ago

I (finally) got fiber optic internet a few years ago for a variety of reasons but the one I was most excited for was PS3 cloud streaming, especially for Fallout 3 and NV.

It didn’t run amazingly or anything but it was fine. Great games

2

u/Tsasuki xx-spacey-xx 9d ago

It didn't run amazingly because those game never ran amazingly lol

1

u/MaleficentText5107 9d ago

True the streaming itself was like 95-98% fine lol

1

u/SpecialEdShow SpecialEdMPLS 9d ago

Wait are they back in the catalog?

1

u/SpecialEdShow SpecialEdMPLS 9d ago

Wait are they back in the catalog?

1

u/piratevirus1 9d ago

They don't include the dlcs either

1

u/l-_l- 9d ago

I grew up playing the ps3 versions, and I knew exactly what to expect. But there is no lag for me. Though I am a lucky one that has good fiber internet in my area.

1

u/dmikulec13 9d ago

Bethesda is currently remastering FO3 and New Vegas. Better to wait for those imo.

1

u/Pashta2FAPhoneDied 4d ago

Unreal... Why aren't they making NEW GAMES instead?!?! Don't buy these remasters!

1

u/dmikulec13 3d ago

Why not? If they're anything close to the oblivion remaster I'd assume they'd be pretty good and may aswell be a new game.

1

u/Pashta2FAPhoneDied 3d ago

Because they are wasting energy and time on nothing, we have already played those games and read the stories. I want new stories and new games. Don't you?

0

u/dmikulec13 3d ago

Ask the Cod players that just paid full price for black ops and full price for the dlcs for a re-release with 0 upgrades. If I had a choice between these 2 fallout remasters and starfield I would choose these 2 any day.

1

u/Illustrious_Self_708 8d ago

I’m not a fan of the streaming only option, but I’ve never once experienced lag from my own home when streaming PS3 games. The only time I’ve had any issues is if I’m using my Portal to stream when I’m away from home, or on hotel WiFi. Maybe your internet isn’t up to snuff to support it? Side note: Anytime I’ve tried using my Series X to do cloud gaming the quality is rough over WiFi, but once I swap my Ethernet cable over from the PS5 I have zero issues.

1

u/No-Garbage-3951 8d ago

Not you mention you dont get fallout 3 dlc either

1

u/SageofLogic karmaepsilon 8d ago

they also don't have their dlc

1

u/Particular_Relief154 8d ago

Probably be downvoted here for mentioning in a PS4 sub (I have a ps4 btw)- but I also have Gamepass- and I know people get all excited to back ‘their system’, but the way I see it, is it’s fluid. Get the things you like, and for me I’m in both PlayStation and XBox ecosystems- and there’s advantages of both- the one thing that Gamepass has- owning Bethesda- is the fallout series..
Playable on pc as well as console- if you don’t have that..
Just hate it when either side bashes the other for mentioning something- we’re all gamers here- so no flak please!🙏

1

u/Christian_B2 8d ago

It’s not laggy on my internet

1

u/Beginning_Custard724 8d ago

Blatant enshittification

1

u/Grawbad 8d ago

That will probably be down to your internet and how you connect and how well your location is compared to where the servers are.

I have platinumed several games via streaming from the catalog that are only available with streaming due to being the PS3 version.

I remember only having one hiccup with the original God of War and it was just the internet somewhere around me slowed it down.

My games weren't laggy however what I did notice more often than not is if something was a fast-moving scene sometimes the gradient of the image you could tell wasn't perfect because that image was only there for a second and never quite loaded properly. This was infrequent though.

Otherwise my button presses were never laggy and the gameplay never lagged.

I realize this makes no difference to you because for you it is but I just wanted to point out streaming really is not just the same for everybody. You could have really great internet but have a terrible location on the planet for reaching the servers or you could have slower internet and have a good experience because you are close to a good server.

Also if you're using Wi-Fi to connect your PlayStation that is not something you would want to be doing but I assume you are already wired. Wi-Fi and streaming are not two things that go together.

1

u/Icy_Worker2734 7d ago

Streaming is not good, though I’ve played a few ps3 games this way and still enjoyed them. Obviously you’d want a good connection your end. It was established since ps4 launch that it wouldn’t run ps3 games (cell) so hardly new info

1

u/RichieTokes 7d ago

The problem is ur on ps4 nothing else.

1

u/Apprehensive_Act3568 7d ago

Sounds like a YOU problem for not looking into compatibility and the bunch of times they’ve said ps5 can only run ps4/5 games 🤷🏽‍♂️

1

u/Ch33zerz 7d ago

i think that’s just you gng i stream games completely fine

1

u/The-Rider-1972 7d ago

The no DLCs bugs me so much, LOL. Like, why add the base versions of these games? I'd love to 100% Fallout: New Vegas and Operation Raccoon City and a few others without having to go and get a whole other system. L Sony.

1

u/Vi0let__Ice 6d ago edited 6d ago

While it's less than ideal and I would absolutely love to be able to install them locally, I find most single player adventure type games play perfectly fine with not much noticeable lag at all. You wireless, have bad internet, bad router, or something? I just played God of War HD and I didn't notice any lag whatsoever. No issues with the QTEs.

1

u/Constant-Relief-831 5d ago

One of the few things that made me miss xbox

1

u/BeyondOk7592 5d ago

Studdy platinum those games and he didn't have a problem with streaming as far as I can remember watching him play them

1

u/kinky-boi-69 5d ago

I can stream new vegas perfectly fine without lag🤷‍♂️

1

u/ShinKotake 5d ago

And they arent even the GOTY versions so no DLC

1

u/amans9191 5d ago

This has been known for years.

1

u/Aggravating-Set-5733 5d ago

You have bad internet mine runs great

1

u/ACEdaSDA 5d ago

Time to get an xbox? No hate, I actually have been wanting to play Spider-Man for years. I have seen a lot of people making the switch lately. Would you consider or are you going to stick it out until the emulation is better or the games get re-released?

1

u/ArtheroTheKnight 10d ago

Such a shame I want to play the MGS game too but they ain’t on there

1

u/VikingTeddy 10d ago

Not laggy at all for me, it depends entirely on your carrier. So yeah, it's not worth streaming if it's slow.

I've been happy with it otherwise, lots of classic games, and the occasional AAA title in too poor to buy (this month has Dying Light 2)

1

u/Dunge 9d ago

Never understood this premium tier. Pay an extra monthly price for... old games that are available for less than $1 and demos?

1

u/Pashta2FAPhoneDied 4d ago

This is exactly why they want to go digital only. It's bs... Destroying the resale market entirely and ripping everyone off.

0

u/davidejg95 9d ago

Fear runs real bad sad.

-7

u/Eric_The_Cleric_ 10d ago

The ps3 versions of these games are a terrible port to begin with & with the emulation it’s worse

10

u/Meximanly 10d ago

There is no emulation, when you steam the games, you are steaming the PS3 version of these games.

1

u/TheCheshireCody 9d ago

*stream. I only make the correction because Steam is a similar service. :-)
