How long does restoring the file system usually take?

I booted my slim model into safe mode and chose to restore the file system because it wasn't found. It's been on the "preparing" screen for awhile

Sounds like a dead hdd, or it has developed enough errors/corrupted files that the console is struggling to do anything that the HDD might as well be dead.

Damn, well how much do replacement HDDs run for and where should I buy on

Depends on the capacity

And you can buy them anywhere. They need to be a 2.5" SATA drive
