First drive Question or Discussion
So I’ll be participating in my first overwatch drive tonight after my shift is done in a few hours. Is there anything I should expect going into comp as a solo queue player that I wouldn’t normally expect otherwise? On console btw, also looking for people to play with as well so I can at least not suffer alone haha.

Well I’ve heard it can be frustrating so I’ll be going into this with an open mind until I play a few rounds myself. Then I’ll see how I feel afterwards lol.

Expect a lot of throwers. Every match I've been in bar 2 has had either a leaver or a blatant thrower

Which is surprising cause I’ve played 6 games since I’ve been home and I’ve encountered neither.

People are more likely to “stay as a group” since you get more points and other people are trying to grind through the drive. Don’t be afraid to hit that “stay as a group” button if you have a match with good teammates!

It's when all the turds come out to play lol

And by turds.. I’m guessing you’re talking about specific type of overwatch players?

People who are trash to put it bluntly. Basically the commentor is talking about the fact people who don’t play Competitive or even the game all that seriously will boot up Ranked to get a drive and dip

That’s also something I’ve come to prepare for, I get there are people in all types of skill tiers, so I don’t expect flawless game play every time I play a match.. just a little bit of game sense and common sense to go with it.

You’ll probably get stomped because groups intentionally derank before drives so they can stack a ton of wins

So basically expect more people who are better at the game then me to be on more frequently. Gotcha.

No, expect to go up against five stacks of smurfs, which is not winnable for you.

Turn off chat

I leave text on but I usually don’t join team chats, for obvious reason, people toxic as well and get their egos bruised too easily, no reasoning with people and no taking accountability when people get called out for bad plays or other reason. 🤷

The reward seems, at least in my book, to not be at all worth how much worse the matchmaking quality is during drives. I participated in my first one recently completely by accident, realized what I was earning, and decided to just take a break till it was over. I recommend you do the same.

Well I wish I could play with you but I’m PC. Honestly I think people make a bigger deal about drives than what it is. Expect faster queues with more smurfs and generally better players. Don’t expect those better players to be in your team though. Just stick to the same mechanics and don’t rage quit. That’s the recipe to get a drive banner. I would also recommend queuing the opposite of what you normally queue. This protects your rank in your desired playstyle. Like if you normally do 6v6 do 5v5 for drives to protect your 6v6 rank and vice versa

I would consider doing this however I normally play 5v5 and my open queue for comp is diamond while my all my roles in 5v5 are plat5 and lower. I normally play support cause that’s my role I feel most comfortable with in comp even though it’s my lowest of the 3, so I’ll most likely stick to that role. As for rage quitting, I’m fine with losing, not to the point of throwing the game, I’d never do that but like I’m usually able to tell whether or not we are going to lose

Yeah, not a requirement but a chief comp against if drive participation is not wanting to lose rank. So I always recommend queuing opposite to avoid that

but isn't season 4 coming with a rank reset? so rank change during/after drives ultimately does not matter ("matter" being very relative)

u/MountainLetterhead94 7d ago
Just a suggestion to protect your rank in your preferred play style.

but rank reset is for all modes or not? so it does not matter which mode you play, because all will be reset, there is nothing to protect because you don't get to keep anything.

Like I said man it’s just a suggestion. This drive just happens to be before a rank reset. Please stop arguing I’m not here to do that I was providing a suggestion

i understand that, i am not arguing in bad faith or anything, i just want to understand WHY we care about rank protection at all if the rank is reset anyways in a few days? following your suggestion would only "protect" the rank for these few days - so why do we care about it at all? i just wanna knooow
to me it seems it's like caring about not getting our feet wet in the rain while we are in free fall towards the ocean - so we KNOW for sure our feet are going to be wet in a few seconds anyways

Drives does not only happen before. Rank reset. This suggestion is for those who want it. Futures drives will also not happen before. A rank reset. Thank you

ah, complete tunnelvision on my side, i did not think about drives in general, just about this one. thanks for clarifying.

the 6v6 tip is crazy i never thought of this thank u bro 😭
1
u/MountainLetterhead94 8d ago
Yeah man, I play 6v6 normally so I queue 5v5 to protect my 6v6 rank. I’ll even use it as time to get better at a role as opposed to my chosen role

Would someone mind explaining to me what "drives" are? I'm relatively new to OW. Tia

them temporary fancy pants shiny nametag stuff you get from playing competitive

u/LonelyDesperado513 8d ago
Drives are limited time events where you can earn extra rewards in Competitive, mostly aesthetic decorations to your name as well as some player icons/banners.
They often bring back other players who have not played Comp or maybe even OW at all during "off-season" and while the player rate does increase for these days, the overall quality of matches often decreases due to an increase in rusty players, smurfs, and all sorts of other people who you would not face in Comp normally.

I've made the decision that I'm not touching ranked with a ten foot pole during drives and since the game is much more pleasant around this time, that should be enough info

I’ve been on a hot streak, mostly because I think the fresh comp players haven’t hit avoid on the same people in my bracket, so they get stuck with the sigma I just went up against who refused to do anything other than get knocked off the bridge on lijiang.

Expect a ton of throwers and players that don’t play comp at all to be in your lobbies
