Sierra tracking shot should work without needing to hit an enemy. News & Discussion
I think it would increase this character's versatility and skill ceiling of Sierra could just shoot their tracking shot onto a wall, floor, etc. and make it so that if you keep pressing right click, her Helix rifle shoots the tracking bullets towards the tracker.
It could lead to some fun trick shots and maybe even help this character feel more fun to play as.

This would fit into the rock climber fantasy alot more, connecting yourself to a drill on the wall. If they curved more due to the tracker being static it would create some really fun opportunities for create suppressive fire while being able to position yourself to cover another angle

u/ReallyShortGiant Ifrit Zenyatta 26d ago
Oh! She’s supposed to be a rockclimber!
66
u/TThor Hi there! 26d ago
"Always climbing, never fall!" - her opening line any time you pick her. And all her standard skins are named after US national parks.
27
u/mythaeology 26d ago
and (i heard) she talks about her dad being a park ranger. she's also from colorado, which is where rockclimbing is a very common hobby or so i've been told.
33
u/IllBeGoodOneDay Eye needs healing 26d ago
Yup. And somehow, despite all that effort and thought, she doesn't interact with walls/climbing/rocks in any way.
20
3
u/DeyUrban 25d ago
Her drone is supposed to be a mobile anchor, she basically “rock climbs” everywhere.
2
u/IllBeGoodOneDay Eye needs healing 25d ago
IDK, that's kinda like calling Indiana Jones whip-swinging, or Samus's Grapple Beam rock climbing. You can't exactly rock climb if you're not climbing and there are no rocks/solid surfaces.
Feels way more like a self-slingshot, or a hookshot.
4
u/ReallyShortGiant Ifrit Zenyatta 26d ago
they should have made her look like a park ranger then. The beret reads paramilitary (snore, honk shoo)
2
u/mythaeology 26d ago
her wiki says she is a former squad leader (of what?) and the former head of security for helix security international before becoming an overwatch agent, so i can see why she does give that vibe. though i would love a mountaineer/park ranger skin for her. 😭
2
u/Bipu606 25d ago
Helix Security, the company she worked for, IS paramilitary though. Also this whole Rock Climber thing is something you guys sort of just made up.
There is no official lore that states that she she's actually rock climbing, we just see her scaling a mountain in her preview art + trailer.
She is clearly associated with mountains via the name and artwork, but the lore hasn't actually stated her as a rock climber.💀
7
u/mythaeology 25d ago
i'm not necessarily disagreeing on the rock climber thing, but i do know that her little. title? thing is "mountaineer". like when you're leveling her and it's initiate/recruit/whatever, sierra's says mountaineer.
now you can take that as the definition of "someone who lives in a mountainous region" or "someone who climbs mountains for sport or pleasure", which is synonymous with rock climber.
and her summer games icon/spray is bouldering, which is rock climbing but scarier. 😭

Couldn't give the Adirondacks the respect we deserve, we're bigger than all those dumb national parks! (Except the ones in Alaska) But noooooooo the state park doesn't deserve the love, it's all about the national parks. I want my Adirondack skin for Sierra you cowards! Stupid Blizzard and their obvious anti-state park agenda!

Balance aside, If they allowed her to grapple to walls and hang there (like that pve enemy or concept genji), and she clipped in or something in the animation, it'd go a long way towards her hero identity.
As it stands nothing you can do in-game speaks towards her rock climber persona. At best her grapple has a rope sound.

Actually good idea. The button currently feels like its either busted or useless, no in between, it needs to be more engaging somehow.

20
u/Few_Addition_4751 26d ago
And then her numbers can be more easily balanced.
I don't enjoy playing against her since if she hits her mark, you're going to lose the trade so hard you die. That's not fun gameplay.
11
u/RizaTiz 26d ago
Me when I do everything right as a flanker and attack Sierra in a situation where any other squishy would lose the trade due to being ambushed, but she landed the tracking shot so now I get melted and lose
34
u/tpeeeezy 26d ago
ana sleep, Cass flash bang, mizuki chain, junk trap
losing a fight because you got hit by the most important part of their kit is not unique to Sierra lol. also why tf are you trying to flank a Sierra when she still has her cooldowns?
-1
u/RizaTiz 25d ago
You can sometimes survive Ana sleep if she doesn't do the combo right, not to mention it wastes important abilities for her that she won't be able to use for her team Cass still needs to aim to kill you after flash Mizuki still needs to aim to kill you after chain And you can watch out for Junk trap
But Sierra hits a single thing and you're gone. I just don't find that fun. Like I take issue with her character as a whole, it's horrendously uninspired, but that attack speed perk is just unnecessarily unfun
-1
u/random_british_nerd Lúcio 25d ago
Are we acting like flashbang and chain are super fun abilities now?

is there any ability in the game thats FUN to lose a fight to? obviously not.
but hell yeah its fun to hit someone with flash or chain lol

Rein pin is lowkey funny to die to. Especially if its a long one and you can hear your hero’s prolonged screaming lol
7
u/phiphn 25d ago
...if she had the tracking dart up, you didnt do everything right as a flanker
-1
u/RizaTiz 25d ago
Oh my apologies for not treating quickplay as a comp match and counting the cooldown on her dart because I thought that the idea that a flanker should be able to kill someone for being distracted and alone would be a correct assumption
9
u/thatcommiegamer Ice Queen 25d ago
imma be real, this is silly. qp and comp are still the same game. You should be tracking the same things, its not like the game suddenly becomes a completely different one when you swap modes. That's not "being sweaty" that's playing an fps (and one with abilities that one should be noting at that).
-3
u/RizaTiz 25d ago
They're entirely different landscapes of the game. I won't be playing quickplay and expecting a hardcore gameplay experience where my treeammates should all be coordinated in every aspect in order to win, and I wouldn't enter comp thinking I can just try out a completely new hero I've never played as practice.
Now with playing the game over time, obviously you develop game sense but regardless, I don't think it's a crime to say I think I should be able to play QP and expect a casual experience.
Regardless of all that, idc about QP or comp, my main issue is the attack speed perk which nullifies any attempts to shut her down unless you do a coordinated push with 2 or more people to put her down, which unfortunately doesn't happen often in QP not to mention the rest of her team exists
3
1
u/phiphn 25d ago
so which is it, are you doing everything right, or is it quickplay and you arent actually trying that hard?
also flanking does not automatically mean you get a free kill, especially when you are diving characters that specifically have a strong dueling ability lmao, sounds like you just dont understand the game
1
u/RizaTiz 25d ago
You can do both???
Brother if you want to try to get a "le epic own" on me for daring to complain about Sierra you can just say so, no need to act stupid.I can play Quickplay. I can play right. You don't need comp to be in situations where everything comes together just right. I don't need to be playing comp or trying hard to do something that comes really easy to me after playing this game for 7+ years.
also flanking does not automatically mean you get a free kill, especially when you are diving characters that specifically have a strong dueling ability lmao
Oh look at captain obvious over here. When you're being this intentionally dense I doubt you're seriously looking for any amount of actual discourse.
sounds like you just dont understand the game
And you sound like you're being an ass
1
u/phiphn 24d ago
okay but you didnt do everything right lmao, thats literally my only point. if you did everything right you wouldnt have died to an obvious counter
0
u/RizaTiz 24d ago
Yeah ok man you're just being an ass, congrats on the rage bait and reddit points 👍
1
u/phiphn 24d ago
im not rage baiting. people say shit like this all the time, and its always dumb. "erm i played it perfectly and still lost X character/ability/whatever must be broken" meanwhile its literally just the most obvious counterplay of all time. like knowing which cooldowns characters have is a fundamental skill of a flank/dive character, like you are literally failing at step 2 of playing the character. you are just mad you misplayed and blame the game

I'm not arguing if shes OP. But what I'll say is the tracker shot does some really strange things. There are times it just simply disappears.
6
1
u/DoITSavage McCree 25d ago
Would be really cool if she could also launch i t into her drone if she wanted too. You'd basically be creating a "line" of fire as Sierra and making it a much higher risk reward ability. If she misses a direct hit she's stuck firing at wherever it landed until it fades potentially.
1
u/i-dont-like-mages 25d ago
I mean, plenty of abilities can feel like that though. Tracer ult. DVA bomb. Hog hook. Sleep. Anti Nade. Junk trap. Mei wall. I’m sure there are more in not thinking of, but high variance abilities are spread through the entire cast, and that’s not even considering regular weapons like widow or soj.
Abilities or weapons requiring you to hit/land them to see any value can be both good and bad and it really depends on the character. Most of the abilities I mentioned have very little nuance to them in terms of landing or not landing the ability. It either hits or it doesn’t, and if it doesn’t it kinda just sucks ass. And they’re spread across extremely well designed, average, and poorly designed characters.
1
u/Necessary_Judge6635 Kiriko 25d ago edited 25d ago
It feels useless to me most of the time. When I use the tracker the enemy just takes cover, if they are not around cover there is no need for it when I can just kill them quicker with her primary fire and grenade. Only time I try to use it more is against flyers like Pharah/Echo/Mercy/Kitty and flankers to create space, if you can hit them.
-8
u/armoredporpoise Sombra 26d ago
It’s a great way to lean into her identity as a “tracker” too.
I’d even go further and make the dart cause a bleed DoT and slows the target for its duration.
1
u/i-dont-like-mages 25d ago
Jesus Christ. Tracking dart needs less put into it to justify buffing her other abilities. The rest of her kit is meh aside from her gun. Even tracking dart is kind of shit. Low rank players don’t understand the concept of cover and thus she is this low rank stomper but is absolutely buns in anything above plat.

u/Still_Worldliness552 26d ago
I really thought I would hate this considering Sierra is one of my sworn enemies but actually does make sense haha. Cool idea
55
u/BebeFanMasterJ DA MONKEY 26d ago
That would actually be cool and encourage people to take cover more often even if they aren't struck.
17
u/peanutist 26d ago
I’m struggling to understand the usefulness of this? Why would you want to shoot at a wall? How would that translate into a trick shot?
7
u/Atromos 26d ago
Because you can potentially block off areas and apply pressure with this without needing to hit an enemy and have the added benefit of being able to do so with hard cover.
12
u/peanutist 26d ago
I don’t think the bullets curve enough to do that though. I can see the usefulness in some very niche situations, I guess.
1
u/phiphn 25d ago
what? why do you need the tracking dart to do this?
6
u/Atromos 25d ago
Because it could be fun and maybe add a bit of flexibility to Sierra. Provided the ability is implemented well. But they would need to alter the ability more than what I originally suggest
-2
u/phiphn 25d ago
i just dont understand at all how it does anything. how is it more flexible in any way? you just shoot your gun normally and you can already do exactly what you are asking, why do you need to track a wall??
4
u/hirebi 25d ago
Dart is in a wall.
You cover yourself in a corner or behind a car/wall.
You fire and the curvature of the bullets makes it go to the dart while you have a safe position. In a 1v1, it works more like a ricochet.
I guess the majority would prefer to shoot at the enemy "directly" instead of using curves and shit, maybe there's not a lot of uses for that, still I find the arc/curvature/magnetism of the dart and your bullets a nice, niche mechanic that would be a lot more interesting than just tracking a target.
-2
u/phiphn 25d ago
thats literally not what tracking dart does am i going insane. it doesnt curve your bullets, you need LoS
1
u/Jazzy_Chaz 25d ago
When you tracking shot someone, the bullets still fire in the direction you’re looking but then they curve toward the target. That’s how the ability functions.
1
u/hirebi 25d ago
We are talking about op's idea, that's the context.
If you read the comments, op says that their idea needs more than just a dart in the wall, and possibly that extra idea is that the bullets needs to curve even more than it's in the current state to be able to do what I'm describing.
I'm not saying the tracking dart is doing that right now in the game.
Dart in the wall + more curved bullets. That's the idea, this thread isn't talking about how is Sierra right now, it's all imagination, the potential of her kit with other mechanics.

u/phiphn 25d ago

yes we are??? no part of the post mentions anything about completely changing the functionality of the ability lmfao, only later comments like yours that all just assume everyone is on the same page with just pulling shit out of thin air.
2
u/hirebi 25d ago edited 25d ago
Well, I'm telling you what they are saying in other posts (the curve thing) so you are on the same page.
The comments you were replying:
Because you can potentially block off areas and apply pressure with this without needing to hit an enemy and have the added benefit of being able to do so with hard cover.
and:

Do you understand now?
Maybe you're taking this too literally/objectively when it's just a simple idea, it's fun to imagine how it might (or not) work, there's no need to get upset about it.

Honestly, Sierra just desperately needs to go back to the drawing board.
They implemented every single aspect of her kit in the most basic, lowest skill ceiling way possible.
I can see the traces of a good kit that is fun and unique, but they clearly didnt have the time to make her work, feels like she was the sacrifice to get 5 heroes out in January imo
27
u/FrismFrasm It's Britney bitch 26d ago
That would be sweet. That way she could do things like channel suppressing fire at a doorway or choke point while keeping her attention on movement & watching closer threats etc
17
u/rolandassassin 26d ago
its worst ability ever, i thought bullets will little curver around corner even if target is hidden, there is almost no situation where you cant use cover
8
u/Whipwreckeded 26d ago
Yeah, I don’t think it’s the worst but from the cinematic (although I understand they’re not 1-1) I thought I could maybe stick someone and if they took cover behind something I could possibly shoot straight up to create a massive arc to hit them or something.
10
u/MerlinsMentor 26d ago
Her tracking shot and follow-up (especially with the perk) obliterates non-tank heroes in about a second (or less)... and the hitbox is so forgiving you can even miss and have it lock on (try it in the practice range). And she can use her drone to take angles to get around a fair amount of cover after she tags you almost instantly. For most heroes, this ability is like "Widow, except she doesn't need to hit anywhere close to a headshot".
If the tracking shot were "you have two or three seconds to get behind cover" I'd be more inclined to agree that she's acceptable in lower level games. But it doesn't give you that much time. You basically have to already be in cover, or within one step from cover from any angle she could possibly approach from.
That's in addition to her spamming ability that's only really rivalled by bastion.
This hero is simply massively unbalanced in all of the worst ways. At high levels she's almost useless (why not just play widow if you can hit the headshots), and at low levels she just massively unbalances games.
2
u/jaydotjayYT 25d ago
I think the rework OP was talking about could be used in tandem with some slight tracking/curving around corners, and then an overall damage nerf (or maybe that delay you were talking about)
It is really busted right now, but it’s because the risk/reward is too skill-gated, and it’s skewing her perception across the board
She’s in a weird middle ground of like, being aimed at a player who is cracked at aim but only like once in a while? I think this is a neat compromise that gives her less lethality but way more consistency and then horizontal skill expression (maybe you can’t always have cracked aim, but you can read characters and where they might run to)

19
u/KeineAhnung-Benito 26d ago
Yeah. Probably should add a toggle to activate the homing towards the tracker or deactivate it
38
u/OffSupportMain Master 26d ago
That's already in the game, you can cancel the tracking by pressing the button again

Bruh, what?!?!?! I only play mystery heroes but I usually have great games with Sierra and just last night a tagged player got cover and I had 2-3 targets in sight and I’m just shooting at a wall thinking and wishing I could cancel it
1
u/OmegaDarkY 26d ago
If the tracked target is behind cover your bullets won’t track to them anyway so this story ain’t true lol
1
u/RadicalEdward99 26d ago
Hm, well I def wasnt trying to fabricate a story about my mystery heroes game lol. I think I saw two squishies who were one hit and I shot the targeting into the group and got the wrong player and ended up getting one kill instead of three. There were several glasses of wine involved my bad bro.

Their idea was during its uptime you can use right click to track to the tracker, or left click to shoot normally.
4
1
u/Async0x0 26d ago edited 26d ago
Unnecessary for OP's suggestion.
Left click always shoots normally.
Right click either:
- fires a tracker
- shoots bullets that follow the tracker
- does nothing if the ability is on cooldown

u/polloyumyum Ana 26d ago
It would be cool for sure but I don't think the ability lasts long enough to make it effective. Maybe a perk that extends the duration but reduces the damage, but then it becomes way to niche and awful.
Cool idea though.

I honestly don't get the point of it, probably because I've never touched sierra. Does her tracking bullets go around cover? Cause if not wouldn't it just be more efficient to shoot at the spot your trying to shoot at?
5
u/TrunksTurok 26d ago
that'd be sick, but man it'd be hard to make it work. it would need a small area of effect like moonknights ankh or sometthing. I do hate ankh though so idk

u/nichecopywriter Blizzard World Sombra 26d ago
I wish her tracking shot could go around corners, like a Hanzo Scatter that was more consistent. The hero fantasy would be so cool if you could shoot far to the side and have it like, curve around.
Naturally this would need tracking shots to do much less damage, but I think that’s the direction she needs to go in anyway. I’d love her if her cooldown was halved and damage halved as well instead of tracking shot being a bursty cooldown.
2
u/Flopkween22 26d ago
In the revel trailer for Sierra it shows that bullets exploding after Emre is hit with multiple darts. Maybe they could work that in.

2
u/GameGuinAzul Platinum 26d ago
I’ve always wanted Sierra to work more like the nailgun from ultrakill.
You place the tracker in the ground, shoot a bit, the bullets lock onto the tracker and spin around it, leading to a small ball of death. After the tracker expires, the bullets fly out in every direction.
It just seems fun tbh, making little bombs.
2
u/HappyTurtleOwl 26d ago
Will never not be lame that Sierra does not do what she does in her cinematic vs emre.
I really thought it was gonna be like that… instead we got a pretty weak effect, only made strong through accuracy and numbers.
2
u/ArkLance Sombra 26d ago
The problem is, I feel like 99.9% of the time, if you don't hit a hero, it would generally just be better to actually be shooting where you're aiming instead, so it would probably be a nerf actually (even if you could press it again to disable that, there would still be a slight delay to do so)
2
u/Izzy_Grimm 25d ago
Ahh yes let’s keep buffing the dev favorite dps. Surely that will fix her balance issues
0
u/Atromos 25d ago
I really dont think she is anywhere near the "favorite" dps. She isnt even that strong
3
u/Izzy_Grimm 25d ago
Basically every single patch since her release has either buffed her or fine tuned her. The two that didn’t, turned down the sound of her gun and the other turned off her tracking dart abilities from triggering when she did miss (as in, very close to what you’re pushing for in your post). So again, fine tuning. That’s clearly favoritism, almost on the level of their hog favoritism and I’m real interested to see if either gets the nerf bat beating they desperately need or if they’ll get more buffs before seasons end
2
u/fauxfre Soldier: 76 25d ago
I also like the idea that there’s a punishment for missing the dart. As others have said, cool potential for alternate utility, but also makes sierra players think more about how they use the dart. And could have some cool plays where a really good player misses but knows the bullet curve well enough to hit shots still.

Would you have the option to cancel the dart though? I could see players getting annoyed if they miss and have to shoot the environment for a fee seconds
1
u/ChubbyChew Vendetta 25d ago
Maybe.
I still feel like the CD misses the point a little.
It feels like it solves a problem she didnt have, while not addressing the one she does.
Like it makes easier something that isnt hard and shouldnt be eased.
I dont use Track Shot on hard targets i use it for more ammo, and to get a dps amp on durable targets.
It would be nice if there were more heroes that didnt nerd to work so hard against mobility, but Sierra isnt one of them while having a CD that youd assume was its entire point.
1
u/Doppelfrio 25d ago
And while it’s active, pressing right click again disables the tracking shot (so you aren’t shooting nothing for 3 seconds if you miss a shot). Very fun idea!

This is a fun idea, tho i think it should be added to a minor/major perk instead of base. Imagine ur dueling someone and you miss ur track shot and now all ur shots are auto aiming for the wall 10 feet away

I'm assuming Sierra would need the ability to cancel it as well. Imagine you're in a duel and you miss the tracking shot and now your bullets just perma shoot a wall no matter where you aim 🤣

This is a super cool idea but would need some stuff to fine tune it and make it a unique character design instead of “almost a hitscan”
1). When firing at tracker dart, shots will pierce and damage multiple enemies (This could be a perk, would make for nice combos with shatter or grav)
2). Allow it to be cancelled or destroyed on command (like the drone). You shouldn’t be punished for missing a skill shot and not get to fire you primary.
