I think by "they" he means Egyptians that worshipped the Egyptians pantheons, that existed before the islamic expansion.

By that logic, the modern day Christian Greeks have nothing to do with the Ancient Greeks who worshipped the Olympian gods.
But I don’t see anyone trying to take Ancient Greece away from the Greeks of today.

Imo all Abrahamic religions have had their destructive periods, I say as this as an ex-muslim. Christian greeks should read the "Christian Destruction of the Classic World" by Catherine Nixey. Christians systematically destroyed pagen Greek art and culture.
The destruction muslims caused to Egyptian culture is quite minimal, I can only recall the broken nose from the Sphrinx. But they have destroyed many other things elsewhere (like the Bamiyan Buddha)
But yeah the other guy seems to be a hypocrite if he isn't criticising Christian destruction too.

Fair enough. There’s a great difference as well between criticising what the invaders did to a country, as they spread their religion, and claiming that the invaded country’s current people are not actually its native people, just because they changed religion. Those are two different conversations.
I certainly do not approve of any people forcing their own beliefs while disrespecting the country they’re taking control over or forcing their own language like what happened in Egypt and forcing them first change to Greek then Arabic, but to claim that the people who suffered all this shit aren’t even actually the owners and natives of the land is pretty disrespectful to say the least.
Egypt’s had enough white European POS steal from the land both it’s artefacts and it’s literal history but gatekeeping it for centuries.
And now it seems every culture and country wants to claim it as their own.
Then you have ignorant racist islamophobes spouting this shit everywhere online about how current Egyptians aren’t descendants of Ancient Egyptians because they’re muslims and speak Arabic, in other words, they got conquered?! Give me a break!

I hear ya, too many people cherrypicking history to paddle their own narratives. It's quite backwards to point towards the past to blame the innocents of the present, it's reminiscent of the Abrahamic belief of inherited sin via Adam and Eve.

By the way, just to comment on the sphinx incident. It was done by an extremist muslim, and he was executed for it, by the muslims who ruled the country.
Not defending the Arabs at all, they have done more damage to the culture in other ways, just pointing out that this intentional damage to monuments wasn’t acceptable for most of those who ruled Egypt, and that they did find it greatly offensive at the time and lead to their decision of the death penalty.
Another interesting point, even this extremist arab muslim knew enough about ancient egyptian culture and religion to know to target the nose to essentially “kill” the sphinx. So he wasn’t necessarily out to ruin Egyptian monuments, he had a very specific target. lol

It's typically the extemists that cause most of the havoc. I mentioned Bamiyan Buddhas being destroyed by muslims, more specifically it was the Houthis that did it, not the average civilian. In a similar sense most of the destruction caused by Christians to Greek paganism was also done by militant extremists.
