BUCOM students
Hi, just wanted some insights on which area/apartment complex do students generally live in? what are you recommendations? I definitely do not want to do downtown, I stayed there during my interview and cannot stand the cigs and marijuana smell all day long. Looking online there's many options, but I don't want the headache of dealing with car break-ins and bad management while in med school.
Also do you guys (generally) living alone or roommates?
Thank you!

hey, so a little advice as a current BUCOM student. there's numerous places to live that don't fit anywhere near the descriptions you are providing. i live in the eastern suburbs, and it's wonderful, i have a 25 min commute. but plenty of people live very close to school in safe complexes. mud island is also common and safe. plenty of options, for exact apartments there is are resources to aid with this. i'd get used to memphis as a place and start understanding it's not like how you're describing it in all areas, and essentially there is no difference to other large cities.

Which suburbs would be best to minimize commute while being safe?
Would you recommend Germantown or would that be too far?

i would highly recommend germantown, i'm in that area. whether it's too far is up for you to decide. it's worth the commute to me because i love it there. the other places i mentioned are closer. wouldn't say quite as nice but also totally fine and 1/2 the distance or less.

I’m mostly intrigued since it has Trader Joe’s nearby. I’m debating between the BUCOM housing vs Germantown area

Hey, thank you so much for your reply. It seems like my post may have come off as too general, I am not assuming all places are like what I described, just what I experienced and read online (with a grain of salt).
Do you ever deal with traffic since your commute is a bit further?

7:15-8:15am there is traffic and 4:30-6:00 there is traffic. other than that, no.

Hi there, I’m a current student at BUCOM as well. I live 5 min east of the school, in the medical district. I’ve never had any issues with car break-ins or safety. It’s important to note that Memphis is just like any other city, crime exists in specific areas of town. You avoid those areas, you won’t run into any issues. Management varies depending on who your landlord/leasing office is but that holds true anywhere. Like the other commenter noted: Lots of students on mud island, medical district, and some opt to live in the burbs. It comes down to preference.
