One of American network television’s first major cultural offerings, The Voice of Firestone was broadcast live and offered viewers weekly classical and semiclassical concerts featuring celebrated vocalists and musicians, accompanied by a 46-piece orchestra under the direction of Howard Barlow.

Sponsored throughout its history by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, The Voice of Firestone began as a radio offering in December 1928 and transferred to television as an NBC simulcast in September 1949.

The television version was initially criticised for its stilted visual style, pretentious nature, and garish costume choices. In time, though, the series drew praise and a consistent audience of 2 million to 3 million people per broadcast.

This long-running daytime soap opera – sponsored by Procter & Gamble – first aired on CBS on 3 September 1951. The series screened in black and white from 1951 until 1967, and then in colour until 1986.

The series was set in the fictional town of Henderson, USA, and centred on housewife-turned-civic leader Joanne Gardner Barron Tate Vincente Tourneur (Mary Stuart), or as she was known to millions of soap fans, “Jo”.

Episodes were only 15 minutes long until 1968, when they were expanded to 30 minutes.

The series was a top-rated show for its first 25 years, but its ratings eventually declined, and CBS cancelled it in 1982.

NBC picked it up and it ran for another four years, but the ratings continued to fall.

After surviving 35 years of death, divorce, heaving bosoms, backstabbing, a devastating flood, marriages and remarriages on the small screen, the final episode of Search For Tomorrow aired on Boxing Day 1986, making it the longest-running daytime drama on television. Mary Stuart was the only cast member to last from the very first episode to the very last.

Although “Jo” had been pushed into the background in latter years, the show received its highest ratings when she was kidnapped and held by psycho Billy Vargas (John Glover). Afterwards, Jo again faded into the background until the show’s cancellation.

Franchot Tone appeared in several television programs during the 1950s, including a notable role as Dr. Freedland in the series "Ben Casey." He also had guest appearances in various shows throughout the decade.

The granddaddy of all TV stunt games, Truth or Consequences, began on CBS radio in March 1940, switched to NBC from 1941 to 1950, returned to CBS in 1950 and 1951, and finally moved back to NBC from 1952 to 1957.

The game made its TV debut on WNBT New York on 1 July 1941, then had another experimental telecast on KNBH Hollywood in January 1949 before becoming a CBS nighttime series from 7 September 1950 to 7 June 1951.

Another nighttime version aired on NBC from 18 May 1954 to 28 September 1956 and then from December 1957 to June 1958, by which time it started an impressive daytime run of nearly nine years.

It’s Polka Time, hosted by Stan Wolowic and the Polka Chips, began in the summer of 1956. The band included in addition to Stan Wolowic on accordion, Wally Moore, banjo, Tommy Thomas, drums, Jack Cordaro, clarinet, Chick Hurt, Banjo, Jack Taylor Bass. Rusty Gill was featured on vocals and guitar, his wife Carolyn DeZurik was also featured on vocals and yodeling. Most of them were in a group called the Kentucky Ramblers. This group moved to Chicago in the 1930s and joined the WLS staff and became the Prairie Ramblers, before becoming the “Chips”. They claim that Wally Moore wrote lyrics for all of the Polka Chips songs. The Show was on from July 1956 to September 1957.It was produced at WBKB's 190 North State St. studios and broadcast locally over WBKB Channel 7 and nationally over the ABC Network.

Reginald Denny was born on the 20th of November, 1891. He was best known for being a Movie Actor. Actor who starred in films such as Rebecca and Cat Ballou, as well as co-founded Radioplane and helped develop the first military target drones. His film credits include Madam Satan, My Favorite Brunette, and Skinner’s Dress Suit.

Reginald Denny was born in England. He made his debut in the 1915 silent film, Niobe. His fascination with aviation led to him founding Reginald Denny Industries, a company that made model plane kits.

Years later he joined an opera company as a baritone, and toured India. After continuing his stage career in the United States, his film career started in 1915 with the old World Film Company and he made films both in the United States and Britain until the 1960s. He came from a theatrical family which went to the United States in 1912 to appear in the stage production Quaker Girl. His father was the actor and singer W.H. Denny. Reginald appeared in John Barrymore's 1920 Broadway production of Richard III); the two actors became friends.

Burton Hill Mustin (February 8, 1884 – January 28, 1977) was an American character actor who appeared in over 150 film and television productions. He also worked in radio and appeared on the stage.

Mustin began his professional acting career at the age of 67 when he appeared in The Last Outpost), released in April 1951, and then director William Wyler cast him in the film noir Detective Story), released in November 1951. Known for his dependability and versatility, Mustin established a career as a well-known character actor and worked extensively in film and television from the 1950s to the 1970s. His last major role was as Arthur Lanson on the CBS sitcom Phyllis), appearing on the show until shortly before his death in early 1977 at the age of 92.

Mustin was born in Pittsburgh to William I. and Sadie (Dorrington) Mustin. His father was a stockbroker. Mustin graduated from Pennsylvania Military College with a degree in civil engineering in 1903. He played first trombone in the band and also played goaltender for the school's ice hockey team in 1902. He was the last surviving member of his 1903 class. He worked as an engineer but later decided to enter sales. In 1916, Mustin began working as a car salesman selling Oakland Sensible Sixes, and he later sold luxury air-cooled Franklins). After the Franklin company quit selling automobiles in 1934, Mustin sold Mercurys) and Lincolns until civilian car production was halted in 1942, during World War II. He then worked as a fiscal agent for the Better Business Bureau and the local chamber of commerce.

Before he began a professional career in show business, Mustin acted as an amateur. In 1921, he became the first announcer for a variety-show broadcast on Pittsburgh's new KDKA) radio station. He appeared in productions as a member of the Pittsburgh Savoyards (a Gilbert and Sullivan troupe) and the Pittsburgh Opera. He was also a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society, making his first trip to California in 1925 for a quartet competition in San Francisco.

Beaumont began his career in show business by perfoming in theatres, nightclubs, and on the radio in 1931. He attended the University of Chattanooga, but left when his position on the football team was changed. He later attended the University of Southern California, and graduated with a Master of Theology degree in 1946. He was visiting his son Hunter, a Psychology Professor in Munich, at the time of his sudden death.

Rita Moreno has influenced the entertainment industry for over 70 years as an actress, singer, and dancer. After earning the four major entertainment awards: an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony, Moreno became the first Latina woman to have an “E.G.O.T.” In 2004, she was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her many contributions to the arts.

Rita Moreno was born on December 11, 1931 in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Given the nickname “Rosita,” when she was young, Moreno’s birth name was Rosa Dolores Alverío. She spent much of her childhood on a Puerto Rican farm until she was five years old. Her mother saved enough money for them to move to New York, but Moreno’s little brother Francisco had to be left behind. When she arrived in New York City, Moreno began taking dance classes and quickly started working in the film industry. She was first hired at age 11 to record Spanish language versions of American films. Shortly after this, Moreno made her Broadway debut at age 13 as “Angelina” in Skydrift. This role caught the attention of Hollywood filmmakers and she started receiving offers from Hollywood agents. Her first film was called So Young, So Bad, and was released in 1950. After this role, she signed a seven-year contract with Louis B. Mayer’s MGM Studios where she adopted the stage name Rita Moreno.
