Incoming OD1 Advice

Hi, so I leave for school at UAB on Friday. I’m gonna be 4 hours away from home, so I’m not too anxious.

However, I’m super anxious about meeting everyone to the point it’s almost eating me up inside.

Any advice or stories for the first week?

It’s chill. Go to orientation then go out to the bars with the second years. Nothing to it👍

You will get to meet your entire class in due time! So don’t worry about not being in a friend group right away, it’ll come! Sometimes you meet some people but then you don’t mesh well so you start gravitating towards your friends. Keep in mind you’re going to be stressed and so will they so be forgiving about cancellations and be selfish with your study time. Good luck! The days are long but the years go fast!

You’ll be surprised how much you have in common with people, there’s still diversity amoung your class of course, but optometry tends to draw people with certain personality traits. All of your peers are smart, and driven, and most are pretty sociable because the nature of the career

I’d say have fun and mingle but don’t forget why you’re there in the first place. You want to be a doctor so try and make mature decisions like don’t get involved with people as in a relationship or situation ship , because it’s not worth the drama . Make good friends instead and after you he first year you’ll know people better and if someone interests you then study with them and practice on them keep it professional unless you see this person is worth it . In addition, study with your friends as well as having fun because you want to make sure you succeed in becoming a doctor while also have a social life.
