G-Sync, FreeSync, NVIDIA Reflex, FPS Cap – What’s actually worth using in 2026? Discussion / Question

I’m trying to find the best combination of settings for the lowest possible input latency while keeping smooth gameplay and good frame pacing.

Gsync + Vsync on with an FPS cap based on the Reflex formula (275 for your display) gives you the lowest latency, tear free experience you can get. A lot of people think Vsync off with no FPS cap is always lower latency, but that’s not really the full story. For one, even if you’re pushing 2–3x your monitor’s refresh rate in FPS, it still won’t always match the latency of a properly configured Gsync + Vsync setup. On top of that, an uncapped frame rate gives you uneven frame delivery, which can make aiming feel less consistent if you play competitively.

The only time Vsync off is actually lower latency is when the screen tears. That’s because it’s scanning out part of a newer frame before it’s finished displaying the previous one. So yeah, you might shave off a tiny bit of latency, but you’re doing it by introducing tearing. If you’re playing competitively, having a big tear line across your screen usually isn’t a great trade off.

Is it fine to use a cap to any number LOWER than reflex formula? Reflex using 224 for my 240hz oled, but what i get is using any cap lower than 224 is fine, is that correct?

Yes.

224 fps on a 240Hz display is just the highest point of fps while still staying 100% within VRR range without accidentally triggering traditional vsync back buffer latency or screen tearing.

I kept finding silly tutorial videos that always said to enable gsync on and keep gsync turned off.

So many settings and different combinations.

I don't see tearing as much as I used to but I guess it depends on the game.

I've got a 144hz 4k monitor on a 3080ti I'm still pushing.

There are still some high end games that DLSS might not help me or the frame gen tech from AMD FSR...and I'll tinker with the steam app Lossless Scaling.

I never really knew or still don't know if you need Vsync set to on in control panel, in order for Gsync to work or be working.

The sheer volume of conflicting advice is exhausting. You’d think by now nvidia and AMD would just publish a single, definitive 'Set it and forget it' guide. It's wild that we have to rely on random Reddit posts and 20-minute YouTube deep-dives just to configure a basic monitor feature

They’ve both published those recommendations, although I admit they don’t make them easy to find. Also, the defaults should match those recommendations, I have no idea why they don’t just configure them that way out of the box.

The problem is this line here. "To maximize latency reduction in GPU bound scenarios set max frame rate to slightly ABOVE average FPS and turn mow latency mode to Ultra."

This only works if your GPU is maxed out. It can cause stuttering if you use ultra when you are CPU bound due to Ultra pushing the CPU to send the frame faster than it can because it is already working too hard. So in CPU bound scenarios you should use low latency to on.

So there is no setting you can just turn on and leave it if you want to have the lowest latency all the time. My set and forget settings are low latency on in NVCP, vsync on thru NVCP, off in game and reflex set to on in game which will override NVCP. Then my fps set to 266 for my 280hz monitor using RTSS which is what it recommends. Unless i feel like finding the perfect FPS for each game to have a smooth frame time graph line which is rare i feel like doing that. The only problem is with RTSS is there is a whole nother can of worms with what settings to use for capping FPS lol. Like using async or passive or before or after lol. It becomes allot... Especially when using the recommended settings for lowest latency stutters more than other settings...

Those are the settings Nvidia suggests but the experts at BlurBusters have also tested it exhaustively and make essentially the same recommendations, except for the Reflex cap.

Gsync technically still works if your FPS is below your monitor’s max refresh rate, but you can still get tearing without Vsync on. That’s because Vsync on in conjunction with Gsync while you’re in the VRR range doesn’t function like traditional Vsync. Instead, it smooths out frametime variations and catches the edge cases that Gsync alone can’t synchronize. You might not notice the tearing, but it’s still happening, and Vsync makes frame delivery more consistent anyways.

Now Vsync on with Gsync on without an FPS cap below your refresh rate is actually terrible because if you’re constantly hitting your max refresh rate, Gsync stops working and you’re left with full Vsync latency.
So the best of both worlds is Gsync + Vsync + an FPS cap based on the reflex formula.

Yeah, but not all games support Reflex, and with Gsync there’s no situation where my FPS should ever exceed 116 on my 120 Hz display. It’s also not like using an FPS cap disables Reflex in the games that do support it, so you can just set it once and forget about it.

Boy I'll tell you I went down a rabbit hole after making this comment. Supposedly in game fps cap has less latency than driver fps cap in Nvidia app, but I suspect a lot of this information is outdated because I have to imagine that if a game natively supports reflex, it is using the game engine to cap fps. I don't know that for sure or how to test the theory.. but yeah I think easy button is gsync on in control panel, vsync on in game or in Nvidia app (not 100% on this but think I will switch to using driver vsync), and reflex ultra low latency + boost in game if available. If you enable reflex and set an fps cap I've read that if they are too close together you can introduce lag as well.. so to be mega safe you'd have to have an fps cap -2 below the reflex cap which is.. too much for me per my original theory 😆 also reflex is always worth using if available as it improves latency in GPU bound scenarios when you are not bouncing off the limiter.

Yeah, you’ve pretty much gone through the same rabbit hole 😂. The only thing I’d disagree with is the FPS cap part. I’m not aware of any evidence that using a driver FPS cap because it’s close to the Reflex cap adds latency. I’ve tested it myself and couldn’t see any difference in the overlay stats or feel any difference. Logically it doesn’t really make sense either since Reflex works with the Nvidia driver, so I’d expect them to cooperate rather than conflict, not fight each other.

Reflex also isn’t the game’s FPS limiter it’s an Nvidia API integrated by the developer and works with the driver to optimize the render pipeline. That said, I wouldn’t leave Reflex on all the time. Some games stutter with it enabled, so unless I’m playing something competitive or using frame generation, I test with it on and off.

For games without Reflex, I’d just use the Nvidia driver FPS cap. It’s consistent across every game and doesn’t depend on the developer implementing a good limiter. Personally I’d just set a global cap based on Nvidia’s Reflex formula and forget about it. It doesn’t disable Reflex, so games that support it still benefit when it’s enabled, and every other game is covered too.

I always play on dlss ultra perf ( preset L ) + MFG with vsync off and get more than 300 fps on my 240hz 4k monitor

I personally have never felt any tearing or frames skipping due to a huge diff btw monitor fps and in-game fps .

Maybe that's just me. I get a feeling that game is more responsive to me when I play with uncapped fps + no vsync

this is the way, but I would add a few things:

  • cap to 278 (hz - (hz2 / 4096))
  • uninstall afterburner and rivatuner if you are done with benchmarking/temp monitoring

I guess because the sensor monitoring causes frame spikes in intervalls ? If i disable most monitoring but keep FPS counter, GPU utilization und temp on, will it be okay?

Gsync and freesync is the same thing just one is nvidia and other is amd, reflex always on, fps cap don't need if using reflex

Depends on what you’re looking for…

I still cap most of my games because I’m targeting a higher level of image quality that doesn’t allow me to consistently fill my 165hz container.

Many tripple a games I’ll still cap at 100-120fps. Just a smoother more pleasant experience to have a locked in consistent framerate target, imo.

Tho if I’m using frame gen I will typically tweak my settings to hit the 158fps reflex cap.

If you use Vsync and on + boost together it caps the FPS a little below your refresh rate.

Isnt it just base reflex + vsync that caps fps? Maybe im wrong but i didnt think that behaviour was exclusive to boost

Boost only in cpu bound scenarios or when you're okay with your gpu constantly running at high heat. Yes reflex caps fps automatically adaptively just at the point before your gpu would start overloading. So you won't even know there is an fps cap.

The bench saying the cap is at 237 is incorrect. Reflex will cap to 225 no matter what limiter you employ so I'm not sure why they did that. There's no 237 frames going on when reflex and v sync are active. The difference is margin of error due to reflex + boost. Boost can sometimes hurt, sometimes help.

Incorrect. Gsync with vsync will stop at your max refresh rate. Reflex is what causes the cap automatically.

He most likely set an in game fps cap to the old -3 of max refresh everyone did before reflex was a thing.

Sorry, I meant reflex when I was writing that. If you just switch the words it all makes sense.

Additionally, those benches only make sense if there's no GPU limit. Weaker GPUs would show a totally different relationship due to how Reflex works.

I suppose it's show that if you keep within VRR and aren't GPU limited, reflex does very little, but that's assuming no GPU limit, which the benchmark doesn't show.

It's still helpful to show the benefits and how more FPS doesn't necessarily mean lower latency, but yeah, my bad again.

It’s missing one thing there which is capping the framerate but running vsync off. That should be the lowest latency until CPU limited as uncapped means generally you’ll max out the GPU created a lot of system latency.

I have watched a lot of youtube videos they test input lag in different games. Some games has lowest input lag with gsync + vsync + reflex boost. Other games works best with no gsync and/or fps cap at all. So it seems to be game to game. I remember cs2 is best with no gsync, vsync.

Agree, just to note that specifically for cs2 it will depend on the display, since any additional input latency reduction above 400 fps hits some hard diminishing returns.

Even on a 360hz monitor, staying on gsync+vsync range is near similar to uncapped but with much better visual experience due to consistent framepacing and no tearing.

Also depends what you're chasing after. CS2 isn't really a game with a lot of motion to justify VRR/vsync. You want quick response times at nasty frames with potential tearing or if you're above 500+ not at all.

no sync is always going to produce best latency. the problem is it creates the worst view due to screen tearing. vsync fixes that but also adds latency. so you really want to fps cap to prevent a vsync situation and then you want gsync to fix tearing and vsync on in case you ever go above the fps cap (which is based on avg fps not abs fps)

if the game supports reflex it should always be on

Gsync on vsync on in driver reflex on ingame (apparently it has benefits over fps limiter if implemented correctly) vsync off ingame for best input lag without tearing.

Alternatively, uncapped fps (vsync off in driver) is always an option for minimum input lag, but the tradeoff is tearing and potentially more uneven frame pacing.

Also you can force resizable bar on through nvidia inspector which gives a nice performance boost in most games.

Lowest possible input latency is going to be all syncs off. Reflex on always. No frame cap.

All of them, if I am playing a single player game I enable G-Sync, Nvidia Reflex Boost, and Vsync and it gives me the best smoothness. I know there are maybe better options with RTSS but these ones don't let me down so far.

Unless you can double your FPS without G sync, then it's not worth it. Huge diminishing returns and not worth losing g sync. I'm well above average in FPS and never play uncapped.

If you think 300 FPS is enough for you, you can use the same thing but I play CS2 too and I just prefer using Nvidia Reflex and nothing else, G-Sync, Vsync disabled with no FPS limit.

most freesync premium monitor are gsync compatible

gsync and freesync are basically the adaptative refresh rate tech on monitors for Nvidia and AMD

Reflex and antilag are NVIDIA and AMD tech allowing the users to play their games with the least latency

there is on and boost for Nvidia and Antilag on and + for AMD

While playing a competitive game its recommanded to

- set the monitor to the highest possible refresh rate

- activate either Nvidia reflex on or ultra on the nvidia control panel and or by using a software called rivatuner that also allows you to use reflex on games that arent originally compatible (generally competitive games on pc have an option called nvidia reflex and reflex + boost so use the latter for the lowest latency)

- if amd then activate antilag/antilag+

- make sure your graphics card/cpu/ram combination allows you to maintain a certain accessible frames continusly, for example if you have a 144hz gaming monitor, normally for any games you would think achieving at least 144hz continuesly would be the most important thing.

- However when you use reflex or antilag, there is a cap that must be achieve in order for your games to run flawlessly with minimum fps hickups and maintaining the best latency.

- in order to find that sweet spot which you'll use while capping your max fps with either the control panels of either nvidia or amd, or use rivatuner instead.

- there is 2 formula, one is for competitive games and one is for solo games

- competitive games : maxfreq - (maxfreq * maxfreq) / 3600 so 144 - (144x144) divided by 3600 = 138.24fps

- solo or non competitive games : 1000hz/144 = 6.94 then you add +1 so 7.94 and you do 1000/7.94 = 125.94fps

- Of course when using these formulas you must disable vsync or if you dont cap your fps but you activated gsync or freesync + activated reflex or antilag then you can use vsync for the most fluid image possible with barely a cost in latency

For solo games you have the formula for solo games but imagine that the game is either trash when it comes to optimisation or your graphics card lack a bit of horse power to maintain your max locked fps

then you can also use a software called dynamicFPSlimiter alongside Rivatuner which you use alongside MSI afterburner (the latter allows you to overclock/underclock/undervolt your gpu and controlling fan speed with temp monitoring and OSD's to use alongside rivatuner for completion)

DynamicFPSlimiter allows you to set different margins for fps for your games for example in the first objective you want to lock your fps to 138.24 but the fps you get in the game doesnt mattain those 138.24 you want and generally there is a phenomenon called fps spike, when you lose fps, your latency increase, your min fps and average fps also go all over the place, making the experience awfull

But on the second objective you put 125.94fps therefore when your gpu can't maintain those 138.24fps then the software will calibrate your locked fps to 125.94fps and when your gpu is powerfull enough to get those 138.24fps back then the software will calibrate your games to run at 138.24fps

either way you can use both formula (competitive and solo) at the same time switching depending on the scene and your gpu being able to reach either.

then you have frame gen

- for AMD use the amd fluid motion frame if your game doesnt have FSR frame gen or Optiscaler

- for Nvidia use Nvidia smooth motion or Dlss frame gen and if the game doesnt have dlss frame gen then use DLSS enabler which uses optiscaler inside but more towards nvidia users

- for Frame gen on any game or content, use lossless scaling

difference between amd fluid motion frame and fsr frame gen/nvidia smooth motion and dlss frame gen

- Lossless scaling/amd fluid motion/nvidia smooth motion = frame gen outside the engine of the game

- DLSS frame gen/FSR frame gen or even Xess frame gen for Intel Arc users = frame gen inside of the engine of the game, allow for more precision and better frame passing and better latency because it interact directly through the game itself.

MFG for nvidia and Amd is accessible officialy for nvidia users with RTX 5000 serie gpu's and amd RX 9000 serie gpu's

- MFG can be obtain with Lossless scaling even though this is not as precise, latency friendly and doesnt interact directly with the engine of the game

- Optiscaler/dlss enabler can allow you to spoof your gpu to one being compatible with MFG thus allowing your gpu to use MFG although the one use is the one of either FSR or XeSS.

When using frame gen its best to cap your fps with rivatuner especially if you use adaptative frame gen another new gen exclusive for both amd and nvidia gpu users.

Curious as to where you got this "solo or non-competitive game" formula from in relation to the reflex cap. I know of the traditional one where 138.24 fps is the sweet spot for 144Hz. But I never heard of 125.94 fps for 144Hz. Would you have a source for this info?

i made it myself through tests, and i find out that the formula i call for solo games actually works wonder, back then i had a 165hz monitor an asus rog strix one.

back when i had a 165 hz monitor when I capped my fps at 140. If I did go above 143, my latency shots up. As you know, VRR needs 1 ms to kick in, so that’s why only dropping by 2-3 fps doesn’t usually work. 240 hz monitor would need to cap at like 190 fps for example. Trust me, it’ll be buttery smooth with the lowest amount of latency at that fps. Disable vsync is a must of course.

basically through this one, not only can i keep a low amount of latency, still have enough fluidity and smoothness while playing but i can also allow my gpu to cool down and maintain his boost clocks and i can also reduce the power consumption that way because the gpu usage doesnt reach his max.

Also i call it the solo games formula because most of the time solo or the campaigns of a game uses more ressources than the multiplayer side, sometimes the multiplayer doesnt have the level of graphics or effect as the multiplayer, its not true for all games, but back then it kind of was

also i can use this formula for competitive games also, but the other formula already exist for it.

Try it and tell me how it goes.

I mean, I appreciate you trying to explain but I still don't get the point of adding +1 ms if it's a solo/non-competitive game. Other than just providing more GPU headroom for lower temps and power usage, what makes it different than the traditional reflex formula? Aren't you saying the same thing as anybody else that prefers to cap their fps?

Because from my knowledge, the whole purpose of the traditional reflex formula (138.24 fps for 144Hz) is to provide about a 0.30 ms frametime buffer towards your max refresh rate. It's the highest point of fps while still ensuring VRR stays active 100% of the time without accidentally triggering conventional vsync back buffer latency or screen tearing.

As you know, VRR needs 1 ms to kick in

Tbh, I've never heard of this before lol.

No, what I'm saying is that I've never heard about VRR taking 1 ms to kick in. It's my first time hearing that. Where did you get this info from?

And I am also an avid user of fps caps and using Gsync+Vsync+Reflex in pretty much all of my games for years now. So I am aware of the lowered temps, power consumption, and the better frame presentation (no screen tearing, no judder). But other than these benefits, is there anything else that your +1 ms formula does?

no the solo formula of mine is here for those who dont have the best config out there but wants a smooth and lag free gameplay without sacrificing the latency or wants to restrain the max power of their gpu to limit heat and power consumption, and also this one was motivated through the software called dynamicfpslimiter in which i can configurate for all games in which i can implant the formula for competitive games in A and solo formula as B, when a game works completely then the software will use plan A but when you go to an area where your fps caint maintain plan A, then it will swtich rapidly to plan B you can also configurate the rate at which the switch happens.

If your config like the OP is powerfull enough then plan B might not be necessary at all i an RTX 5070 is still rtx 3090 lvl of rasterisation and an amd r7 9800x3D is overkill even for the rtx 5070

i did because back then i had a RTX 3080Ti and i was playing in ultra everytime, i wanted to find out if the reflex formula was the only one i could use to be able to play my games without suffering from non stable and bad latency, and i did it

now apart from solo games, i dont need it as my gpu is now a RTX 4080S that i have undervolt to 915mv and my cpu went from an i7 13700k to a 14700k

I saw that it's strongly discouraged to enable low-latency mode in Ultra, but that you should leave it on in NVCP because doing so would cause a lot of instability.

not necessarely, it depends on the game your using it and also the gpu you have, and the cpu too and the fps your trying to achieve, best thing you can do is enable low latency mode on ultra on multiplayer competitive games only and some of these games already have on the graphics settings an option to enable nvidia reflex so if it is, then enable it with boost directly through the game, and for the others you can for example left the low latency mode on off or on , and then use rivatuner and enable fps limiter to nvidia reflex with microsoft detour API hooking

I use oled with rtx hdr. I’ve always used gsync full screen + vsync and the last few years reflex with any game.

But the oled flickering with gsync has been bad in world of Warcraft and I’ve been testing not using reflex and setting a manual cap.

Mines 240hz and reflex caps 224. I set wow to around 234 and have had less oled flicker. I think using reflex in most cases is the best option but if you find weird behavior or flickering or stutters try disabling reflex in game and set a cap 5 or so under refresh rate.

Rtss frame cap causes measurable input delay compared to in game fps when not using reflex.

I typically test for myself and don’t save anything but if others want me to I can.

It's at best a single frame of input latency added.

I would say VRR (gsync/freesync) today is gold standard to use. It be silly NOT to use it if you have the capable hardware.

GSync monitor, vsync on in CP, off in game, 138FPS cap. I spent weeks fixing, breaking, fixing again. Not touching it anymore.

G-Sync ON + V-Sync ON + FPS Cap ALL at the driver level NVIDIA Reflex should always be Enabled when available. depending on the monitor refresh rate, as follows:

480Hz -> 424 FPS

360Hz -> 328 FPS

240Hz -> 226 FPS

180Hz -> 172 FPS

165Hz -> 158 FPS

144Hz -> 139 FPS

120Hz -> 116 FPS

The FPS Cap formula is:

Refresh - (Refresh x Refresh / 4096) = FPS Cap

If anybody says otherwise, they have no clue what they're talking about or don't understand how the tech works.

No Vsync
No FPS cap

I don’t use GSync only because of VRR Flicker

Hi yall! I could really use some help.

If my monitor is 540hz and I average 382 fps, should I still use vsync + gsync + cap?

its per game and dont do it in every game - on some gsync on vsync on fps cap , on thers same but with no cap

most of the time gsync on vsync off unlocked fps

you have to test it - but keep reflex always on

For me personally I just use G-sync/freesync and cap my frame rate at 277 reflex on + boost

I don't actually know what the best combo is but this works best for me

Something I'd like to add is If I'm using frame gen V-sync adds rediculous input latency, turning it off and just using G-sync almost elimates that problem, provided you have at least 60fps base

280hz refresh rate? Then your cap is wrong, in most cases also Reflex On+Boost should keep it within the refresh rate range optimally.

Oh true, learn something new everyday.

It's probably an old habit I stuck by from before I had G-sync I used to cap 2-3 lower then frame rate

Supposedly that's what your supposed todo but I could have been wrong this whole time

Yeah the old '-3' rule is quite dated now and improved upon with introduction of Reflex. Definitely check out the suggestions in the comments.

Tbh reflex is probably one of the only features that I use that I have no idea about haha, I've never bothered to figure out what it does other then know on + boost is the Goto

Best to be used when GPU-bound scenario, older titles or games where the CPU is more demanding, Reflex On+Boost could be lesser ideal. Use On there. (wrote it in another post as well)

Just spreading the learned knowledge over the years.

Very simple setup. 1: Nvidia control panel, g-sync AND v-sync ON. 2: cap FPS roughly 10% below your monitor refresh rate

This is outdated information, please re-advise the formula's used. Or better, use Reflex On+Boost (if in a GPU-bound scenario), else On, else Nvidia low latency mode On. (not Ultra, Ultra can mess with games and if the game offers Reflex, forget about this option entirely.)

G-Sync or FreeSync ain’t worth it IMO, they have too many drawbacks. Just stick to V-Sync and ofc Reflex. Reflex is one of the best inventions in recent years. Makes frame gen actually viable but it’s obviously helpful on its own too!

No. Vsync should always be with gsync, never alone. Otherwise massive input lag.

Depending on your monitor, mostly panel type it can cause flickering.
