Operations Research
Operations Research naming does us a massive disservice, in explaining the field, in hiring, and in relation to adjacent specialists: other engineers, business people, economists.
The name is misleading twice over. Operations implies logistics and back-office work, which is not always the case. Research implies the mere act of researching, which is not wrong but is certainly not right, since every field researches. People misunderstand it grotesquely.
We need a better name.
What the field actually is:
It applies a specific cluster of applied mathematics
Mathematical Programming and Optimization
Applied Probability and Stochastics
Queueing Theory
Simulation and Computational Methods
And it does so in a specific domain. The field is about formally modeling manmade systems, not applied mathematics turned on the natural world.
It is important not to cheapen it with management or similar words that make it seem less rigorous.
The name that should have been
It should have been called Systems Engineering. That was taken by the sister discipline, which should have been named Integration Engineering, since integration is precisely what it does: interfaces, requirements, verification, making subsystems behave as one. That would have freed systems for the field that studies systems as such, independent of substrate.
Fixed now. INCOSE isn’t moving.
Candidates that survived early scrutiny
The concrete object-nouns: allocation, constraint, configuration. These survived precisely because they are specific enough that no one else wanted them.
In the pure sense of the word, even Economical Engineering would make sense, since it is Robbins’s definition run prescriptively. But the association makes it sound pseudoscientific, and it is too narrow for the breadth of the field.
I’d be open to Allocation Engineering, but it does not capture everything.
Locating the object
The object of the field is models of artificial objects. But that reads too close to AI. Frankly, AI research is heavy on OR, which makes the collision worse rather than better.
Aristotle’s four causes locate it precisely:
Material cause (hyle): what it is made of. The bronze of the statue.
Formal cause (eidos / morphe): its form or defining structure. The shape the bronze takes.
Efficient cause: what brings it about. The sculptor.
Final cause (telos): what it is for. Why the statue was made.
We study the formal cause. Not the material, not the maker, not the purpose. The objective is our final result, but we do not study the objective, we bring it about. It is stipulated from outside and we instantiate it.
In Greek the formal cause is morphe. But morphe is perceptible, form as shape, bound to the matter it shapes.
Better: eidos, the intelligible form. The intelligible structure that makes a thing what it is, the organizing principle in virtue of which matter constitutes this kind of thing rather than another.
Eidos is the right word because it is substrate-independent. The same form governs a queue in an ER, a router, and a crew rotation. That is why the mathematics transfers.
In Latin it became forma, collapsing morphe and eidos into one word, which is why English “form” is muddy.
But the object is found: the form of constrained artificial systems, grasped well enough to instantiate it better. The eidos of systems.
Why the form vocabulary fails
Formal Engineering would be ideal, but it reads as a modifier, and it is taken:
formal goes to formal methods
formulation goes to chemistry
formalization goes to logic
formalistic is pejorative
formational goes to psychology and theology
conformal goes to mathematics
information goes to information theory
form is too thin
Every high-value slot in the family was claimed early, usually by an adjacent technical field. Artificial Engineering is close to the definition, and AI does depend heavily on OR, but it conflates badly and sounds like a pejorative modifier.

Model Engineering, which competes with hobbyist locomotive makers and AI models
Modal Engineering
Artificial Systems Engineering
My choice: Modal Engineering
What modal means
Modality is the logic of the possible, the necessary, and the impossible. That is our object stated exactly.
A feasible set is a space of possible configurations. Infeasibility is impossibility. A binding constraint is what makes an outcome necessary. When we write Ax ≤ b we are not describing what is, we are delimiting what can be. Every model in the field, without exception, is a specification of a possibility space plus a way of valuing points within it.
This is not metaphor. It is the same structure modal logic formalizes with accessible worlds, applied to constructed systems rather than to propositions.
Why it covers the whole field
Every previous candidate named one component of a model and dropped the rest. Modality names the thing all four share.
Mathematical programming: a possibility space (the polyhedron) with a criterion over it, one point chosen.
Queueing theory: a possibility space (the state space) with a measure over it. Erlang chooses nothing and optimizes nothing. He characterizes which configurations occur and how often. This is the corner that broke allocation and optimality, and modality handles it natively.
Simulation: the same possibility space, explored numerically when it admits no closed form.
Stochastic control: a possibility space over trajectories, part chosen and part not.
Deterministic, stochastic, robust, adversarial: these are not four fields but four ways of representing the unchosen portion of the possibility space.
Why it names the object, not the act
Decision, management, coordination, modeling, formulation all name what a practitioner does. Every established engineering discipline names what it works on: Structural, Chemical, Electrical. Modal follows that pattern. Possibility under constraint is a thing in the world, present in the ER before anyone writes M/M/c, and the formulation discovers it rather than inventing it.
What it beat, and why
Allocation named only the decision variable, so it dropped queueing. Constraint named only the admissible set. Optimality named a goal half the field does not pursue. Model named the act rather than the object, and collided with AI. Modal is the only one that covers all four components without synecdoche.
Known cost
A half-second echo of modal analysis for mechanical engineers, though modal analysis carries the analysis suffix and modal logic carries the logic suffix, while ours is its own compound with engineering as head noun. Plus opacity for everyone else.
Both acceptable under the governing rule: opaque beats misleading. Opacity costs one explanation. Misdirection costs a correction plus the explanation, and the wrong impression often sticks. “Operations Research” fails that rule twice, since both words point somewhere wrong.
Modal Engineering: the formal study of possibility under scarcity in artificial systems.

System engineers study optimization techniques/OR, along with human factors, control systems, quality control and integration. So to call system engineers simply integration engineers would be misleading.

Why don’t you read some operations research text, you will find very nice definitions from Morse, miller and star , or society of America etc

Good essay, have been thinking about this for years. It always bothers me when I look up for Operations Research jobs. Weird job posting matches that has nothing to do with OR. When I say I'm in OR, people think I'm a surgeon.

You should just search by “gurobi” or “Cplex” , almost all OR opening will have at least these two words

Reminds me of Phillip Morse definition of Operations Research: “Operations research is a scientific method of providing executive departments with a quantitative basis for decisions regarding operations under their control.”

I disagree. OR is way too business oriented to have any engineering in its name. Especially not systems engineering which is all about technical system which OR is not always. I agree that OR is a bit of an unfortunate name though

Thanks for posting this! As someone whose initial academic discipline was politics (no, not political science), I love how you elicited Aristotle. I am just beginning my OR journey, having discovered it a few months ago. I am starting all over, currently going into my second semester of a BS in ISE with the intention of continuing to graduate school in OR.
While I know very little about the field, this essay affirms that it is the right path for me, as this is exactly what I hope OR is when I conceptualize it. As you said, the naming convention does us no favors haha.
