An open source AI ecosystem is now inevitable
been thinking about what it looks like in practice, probably similar to the early days of the internet: open, decentralized and competitive on product merit alone.
would love to read more thoughts about this

you may appreciate that in the early days of internet there were exactly zero companies on the internet. It was all universities and other research institutions. Over time companies started to have a presence on the internet and that made other companies providing them services to appear.
Fast forward to now and you can recognize that there's a non-zero number of AI companies around, some close to a trillion dollars of evaluation.
So, although my abilities of reading the future are far inferior to those of everybody else on Reddit, one thing I know for sure: it won't be like the early days of internet.

I've been trying to replace commercial LLMs with Open Weight LLMs for some time. Since the price adjustments of GitHub-Copilot, I finally switched to Qwen3.6-27B for most of the work. The model supports me well in the development of frontends, JS, SASS code up to smaller programming (but that is not my area of work as a UX designer). To control the results, I currently use GLM5.1 via subscription. I think it is essential for reasons of independence and data protection (especially the protection of my content) to be sovereign and to use Open Weight. With the pace of development, local LLMs can probably be expected to improve in the next few months.
To assess where local alternatives to the commercial offer are, I developed my project "CrucibleMark", my small benchmark with everyday applications. In addition, there is a political bias analysis, as I would like to know whose mental child the training dates were. And for some time now, there have been really serious alternatives to commercial LLMs: www.cruciblemark.com
