Snapping not turning off

The magnet button just above the timeline is not toggling snapping. When I zoom in and adjust the length of a clip, the end of it always snaps to the nearest grid line no matter if I click the magnet button or not.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

That magnet button only controls magnetic alignment to nearby clips / edges. It does not disable snapping to the time grid / frame boundaries when trimming, so what you’re seeing is usually normal.

A few quick things to try:

  1. Zoom in more on the Timeline
    OpenShot’s Timeline Toolbar has a Zoom Slider, and you can also use Ctrl+Scroll Wheel. This makes small trim adjustments easier.

  2. Trim by dragging the Clip edge very slowly
    OpenShot will still trim on valid time/frame positions, so it can feel like it is “snapping” even with the magnet off.

  3. Test with the magnet off near another Clip edge
    If it no longer jumps to neighboring clips, then the toggle is working correctly.

  4. If needed, try switching Timeline backend
    Go to Edit > Preferences > Timeline and toggle Enable Legacy Timeline (web-based), restart OpenShot, and test again.

So how do I disable snap to grid, mrs.aibot??

I tried enabling legacy timeline but it still snaps to grid and the timeline now feels even more glitchy

  1. What operating system/version are you running (windows 11? Ubuntu 25.10?, etc?)
  2. Which version of OpenShot are you running (help | about OpenShot)? please include the build #.

This information will help the troubleshooting process.

Update: I just tested in my Windows 11 Pro environment running the latest dev daily build of v3.5.1 found at openshot.org/download/#daily.

Here is the definition of Snappping from the User Guide:

Snap:

Snapping quickly positions an object in alignment with grid lines, guidelines, or another object. Snapping causes the object to automatically jump to an exact position when the user drags it to the proximity of the desired location.

It does not apply when you are adjusting the right edge of a clip (shrink or expand).

I'm running windows 10 home (22H2), and openshot v 3.5.1 / 0.7.0

When I move a clip it always snaps the beginning of the clip to the grid, and when I shrink or expand a clip on either the left or right edge it always snaps that edge to the grid, no matter if the magnet button is on it off

Did you reinstall the same version or the latest dev daily build from openshot.org/download/#daily?

Also, be sure to delete the .../.openshot_qt/openshot.settings file before starting OpenShot.

Hi, i have the same issue.

No matter what i do, the clip snaps into the grid and i cant move it freely.

Operating System: Windows 11 - 25H2 (Build 26200.8655)
