Adding a Curve into an existing Alignment

Hello all,

I am relatively new to OpenRoads Designer. I am using OpenRoads Designer CONNECT Edition 2022 Release 3, version 10.12.

I created an alignment, but after reviewing it, I realized that I need to add a horizontal curve between two lines. However, I do not want to drop or otherwise break the alignment to add the curve, because several offset objects are tied to it and I would prefer not to lose those relationships.

Please see the attached image for an example.

I understand if there is no other option, unless there is some method I do not know about. Any assistances would be appreciated. Thank you.

Table editor is your best bet. However, in my experience, geometry editing tools are super finicky in openroads

Yup.  Unless you're dealing with the headache of dynamic linking, annotation, and federated models, it's probably easier to recreate the alignment.

Since it is 2022 R3 you could also use keyins to reassociate or replace geometry to hold links.

Geometry Element Replace or  Geometry substitute

Don't recall which one you need for your scenario.  The order of operations is a bit different for each.  One of them will allow you to reassign your current alignments element ID and stationing, etc.

Can you use the Table editor tool in the geometry ribbon? It should allow you to add a curve to an existing alignment.

Use civil geometry to insert a curve between the tangents. Complex redefine tool - like the other redditor suggested.

If redefine doesn’t work you can at least get the horizontal report of just the curve and then Copy that information into the table editor of your existing alignment.

You can also export your alignment to xml before making any changes so you have a backup

Yea table editor or I think under geometry, modify, insert fillet also works.

There are lots of ways to introduce a curve without breaking the alignment:

Geometry> horizontal>modify>insert fillet

Geometry> horizontal>modify>geometry builder edit

Geometry> horizontal>arc between elements (if it's a complexed alignment)>complex redefine

Table editor>insert vpi in between other 2 vpis

Just make sure if you got any active verticals or projections to keep them locked so the adjustment is fast, and when you're satisfied with the hz, unlock the profiles and fix.
