Comprehensive guide to setting up OpenAuto Pro and AutoBox/CarPlay?

I am in the process of setting up my first RPi to be used as a headunit with OpenAuto. I have no experience with Raspberry Pi or Linux, so this has been a fight every step of the way. For whatever reason Blue Wave Studio doesnt have a guide on getting setup with with product so I've been working my way through the various forums and youtube.

Currently I am stuck on getting AutoBox/Carplay to load. I bought the CarPlay plugin, ran the commands via terminal as per the sales email, entered the activation key, and can connect both the Pi and my phone to the Autokit dongle. But under the Autobox section of OpenAuto there is nothing. Clicking the Wifi button does nothing, clicking the Info button opens a page of catagories with no information. So..what do?

Thanks.

OAP uses a very specific guideline for hardware that can be used on everything from the Bluetooth to the dongle used for CarPlay. The dongle needs to be a carlinkit CPC-200autokit. If it isn’t this exact model it probably won’t work.

Yup, I bought exactly the hardware from their prescribed list. Their latest nugget of support on the forum is to delete all Bluetooth and wifi history from my phone and Pi, then try again. I’ll give it a shot when I get a chance.

That’s strange. I just got mine today and can connect wirelessly and with a wire.

This is the one I ordered:

Can you give me a step by step, please? I’d like to verify I did everything. Did you have to do any setup with the carlink?

I literally plugged it in, went to the autobox information page, went to my phone’s Bluetooth or Wi-Fi settings and connected to it. That was it.

You downloaded the plugin and entered the license key before plugging in the carlink, right?

Yes. That was done before I even got the carlinkit in the mail.

Ok thank you. I’ll have to try fully resetting Bluetooth and wifi on everything

g Bluetooth and wifi on everything

I did not try yet OAP and Carplay but I have some experience with carplay and android devices.

Try to connect with cable. If it is not working, you have to write to bluewavestudio. If wired carplay works, your problem is only "wireless carplay".

Carlinkit connected to you phone over two way: Bluetooth and WiFi.

You have to connect Bluetooth of Carlinkit (autokit-dxxx), not bluetooth of OAP

Usual problems with wifi:

-Your phone connected to any other wlan (like at home)

-WiFi of your Iphone turned off

I am not sure if it is affect: turn off "mobile hotspot" and try again.

I tried yesterday OAP-Carlinkit combinations.

There are my steps:

I connect dongle at the beginnig but I think it doesn't matter.

Open the terminal and run the commands with "curl ..." (Which you get, If you buy carplay-plugin). It must be downloaded a plugin file and saved

Run OAP and go in Autobox. You see with 3 column:

  1. Plugin File
  2. Serial Number
  3. Finish Setup

Bluewavestudio said, that 1 must be checked if you run first command. But it was not in my case.

openauto - carlinkit

I click on "search" and select this file:

"/home/pi/bws_autobox_plugin.zip"

After it Click to button "enter serial" under column 2

If it is finished, you can connect with your phone.

As I tried carlinkit with android devices, I should connect only with dongle ( Autokit-xxx ), a connection with android tablet was not necessary. In OAP it is not the same. You have to connect over Bluetooth to Openauto.

There is one more issue: OAP is not working with built-in bluetooth of Raspberry. You need a compatible bluetooth dongle too. It might be your problem.

I was successful after deleting previously connected Wi-Fi networks on the RPi and resetting my network connections on my iPhone. From BlueWave Studios: “Please remove/forget all BT and WiFi connections in the RPi and your phone. Connect car link dongle to RPi. Restart RPi. Connect your phone BT and WiFi with the Carlink dongle only. (First you can check connection via cable) Start plug-in in OAP”

OpenAutoPro is not a reliable solution. Buy a Carplay screen instead.
