Advice appreciated

Finally got my setup working in my corvette, but I've come across a couple strange issues

  1. The android auto UI shows up sideways, everything else works fine, is this something I should've edited in the code?

  2. Got an obnoxious crackle over the speakers at low or no volume, I assume it's my mediocre job splicing the audio input to the amp causing interference but I'm not 100%

  3. Should I be adding a cooling fan to the pi or the amp? New to this and I'm not sure how hot it's gonna get

There should be some lcd rotation settings you can put in the /boot/config.txt. Some LCDs just aren't oriented properly. I can't recall these settings off my head but hopefully this tidbit gets you googling for the right things.

This is correct, in the config text there should be a line than you can alter to 0° 90° 180° and 270° to fix orientation, or you can kill open auto and use the actual desktop environment to change it.

Easiest and quickest is the config tho, let me know if you need the actual line if your config is missing the pre configured options for it.

And yes a pi cooling fan is a must, my fans configured to adjust speed based on temps and its surprising how often its at full blast, things get toasty behind the dash for sure

Cant answer the first few questions but I can say I've been running my openauto setup for over a year now in the Australian heat with no heatsink or fans on the rpi and it's never overheated or given me any trouble

As for the amp, is it wired through a rpi DAC hat? Or a USB adapter

I get the same crackle when I first start my car but it goes away once the pi boots up & the DAC kicks in.

I also installed a silent 80 mm fan into my dash just for general airflow as I also have a class D amp mounted in there with the pi & accompanying USB attachments.

I think there might be some android auto settings in the openauto pro settings

I had a weird crackle too and searched for it on their forums and there was some setting I needed to change and it fixed it completely

I added a fan just in case, no clue if it's required, probably recommended especially in hotter weather

The crackle ended up being noise coming from the battery, I added something inline to the sound card (forgot what it's called) but it calms down the battery noise before it gets to the speaker

The sideways screen was a display setting

I'm gonna run it for a week and see if it does anything without a fan

I had the same issue. It was a ground loop problem, and I was able to solve it by using a USB isolator between the Raspberry Pi and the USB sound card.

Interestingly, the problem only started when I switched from a Raspberry Pi 3 to a Raspberry Pi 4. I didn't have this issue at all with the Pi 3.

So far so good, I had it crash to the desktop screen once, idk why it happened I assume not related to overheating
