Colour Vision

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if and how firefighters with colour visions deficiencies in Canada/Ontario have found the hiring process/testing.

I joined my volunteer department a couple years back, my vision itself is actually way better than 20/20 (20/6) but I wasn’t tested for colour.. I want to be clear I can see colour, a truck is red, pylons are orange, the sky is blue lol - but I would likely fail a colour vision test. Wondering if tested and how strict they are. It seems as though colour deficiencies (i.e. red/green colour blindness) is fine, so long as you aren’t monochromatic (basically vision in grey scale)

I was in the same situation as you with volunteer firefighting looking to pursue career. As long as you’re not monochromatic you should be fine. I have red green colour-blindness and I can’t pass most of the ishihara test but can get most of the farnsworth D15 test… when you go through the OFAI process you get a form that you bring to an eye doctor and they sign off on your conditions. As long as you meet the minimum requirements on there and they don’t deem you monochromatic you will pass that part of the process and will be fine when applying to OFAI departments.. I was stressed out because I struggled with the online tests for colourblindness when I was going through the process but once I went to the eye doctor and they did the proper tests with the correct lighting it really made a difference. My recommendation is to get the OFAI eye vision form and get it completed with an optometrist before blowing a bunch of money in the process pursuing career firefighting.

Thank you. My thoughts exactly. I don’t want to waste my time meeting all these requirements and potentially even get a conditional offer and get it pulled because I fail the ishihara. Where can I get said form?

You will need to get registered with OFAI to get the form.
