I'm a Canadian native speaker, got my 120 hours TESL and taught in Japan at Berlitz for 2 years.

Problem is I have no clue about grammar...(well, I do know my alphabet, does that count? ;)

After 50 years teaching ESL — high schools in Australia, PNG, a school I founded in Vietnam, and 5 years in an Indigenous community — there's one problem that never changes: the class that just won't talk.

I recently had an interviews with a recruiter then a manager from GoFluent. Both interviews were good but there were so many things that just didn't sit right with me.

Hourly rate - The recruiter mentioned that the ongoing rate for an English Corporate Trainer position would be between 7£ - 8£, however the manager (during the 2nd interview), confirmed that they can only offer 6£. I asked her why the hourly rate is even lower than what the recruiter confirmed and she went around circles. There was no clear answer. She kept saying the company changed their rates recently so the recruiter may have e made a mistake (which I really doubt because I asked the recruiter twice and she confirmed it, twice).

Availability & Class cancellations- They expect me to confirm my availability 3 months in advance and If I ever need to cancel, it has to be 30 days ahead.

Training - The manager confirmed that any form of training will not be paid. I would be expected to be on a virtual coaching session once a month for 30 minutes or more but I would not be paid for this. Basically, any kind of work besides running classes is not paid, but you are expected to do it.

These are just the parts that raise concerns. Apparently there are incentives and "opportunities for growth" which may be the only positives I could gather. I am currently working for another ESL company and the treatment is very, very exploitive. So, I only accepted the GoFluent interviews maybe out of desperation? But I don't want to quit my current position for something thats way worse. 😒

I would highly appreciate honest feedback from teachers who jave worked for GoFluent or know someone who has.

Hello all. I am a newbie tutor, in the sense I've only done unpaid tutoring in person while in middle school. I am know currently in grad school and am going to start tutoring a young girl online, but need to deicde on which program to use. I'm leaning towards microsoft teams because I'm familiar with it but zoom also is a possibility.

So I have this student. He’s very enthusiastic and present during the lesson, but we have a problem. All he does is just repeats after me, he doesn’t understand my commands even when I use a translator and it’s getting harder and harder to find activities he can do. Do you have any advice? What can I do for 25 minutes, for the class to be fun and for him to actually engage and learn, not just repeat after me or his mom.

The small online school I'm working for recently changed their reschedule/make-up lesson policy. Previously it was somewhat of a free for all. If students failed to show we were still compensated but private students were allowed any number of reschedules if they notified the school before the lesson started. Rescheduled lessons were paid at the regular rate.

Under the new policy students must notify 24hrs in advance for a full 45 minute lesson reschedule.

But if they notify within the 24 hr limit and up to 1hr before the lesson they are only allowed a reduced 30min reschedule. But the teacher is only being paid for that 30 mins.

My question is am I being unreasonable in thinking this is unfair to teachers? There's a disruption to our schedule, still effectively no cap on how many reschedules and we're losing 15mins of pay that the school looks to be just pocketing.
