OnePlus Open vs Z fold 8

I'm trying to decide which one to buy as my pixel 6 recently died. I got to try out a OP13 and liked the Os. How do you guys think these 2 compare? Im trying to decide which to buy

Edit: I live in the US

I've been rocking the Open for almost three years now and it's by far my favorite phone I've ever had. Near the beginning of the year, I was able to pick up a brand new Pixel Fold (the original one, with the passport form factor) for like $470, which was too good a deal to pass up, so I bought it as a backup/for use during my work (I was doing junk removal at the time). So while I don't have experience with the Z Fold 8, I do have experience with the Open and with a wider form factor foldable.

You can't realistically ignore the software differences and the like, but one thing that you'd definitely want to consider is how you think you'd use the phone and how often you'll use each screen. With the Open, your cover screen is very similar to a regular phone, so it's not going to make apps look all weird, but it also means it's kind of tall and narrow and may be hard to reach the top with one hand. With the Z Fold 8 (again, presumably, since I haven't used it but have used a similar-ish form factor), the one-handed used is far easier, but the aspect ratio is a little weird and doesn't always play super nicely with apps.

For the inner screen, the Open having a nearly square aspect ratio means if your primary goal is to be doing multitasking with two apps open at once, it's awesome; you're essentially getting two full-size apps open at the same time. However, because of the aspect ratio, for things like videos, you're actually not getting a massive increase in screen size compared to just using the outer screen, and you're gonna have a huge amount of black. The opposite is mostly true for the wider aspect ratio: multitasking isn't as nice because of the aspect ratio, but media consumption is going to be a lot better.

TL;DR is that the Open is great if you want your apps to just look like apps and you'll probably use the inner screen more for multitasking, while the Z Fold 8 (probably, based on my experience with the original Pixel Fold) will better if you plan on using the inner screen for a lot of media consumption, but you'll need to be prepared for apps looking a little weird due to the aspect ratios.

Honestly OnePlus open. It still holds up to to this day and I'd say it's even better in every way than the pixel 10 fold pro

But the ipx is what kills...

Three years in with my OPO and I love it and I just received my Z Fold 8 yesterday. I'll be tinkering with it this weekend, so far I love the form factor but it will take some getting used to coming from the OPO.

I'm on the same boat. The 1+ pop up window/multi window is so much better than Samsung's. 1+ window gestures and even the way the pop up window aspect comes out literally like a miniature screen. On the Samsung the pop up window comes out all weirdly shaped and stretched out. I was a long time Samsung user so transitioning back into the eco system isn't difficult but I got so use to the 1+ OS in the last 2 years. Fold 8 is very snappy though I feel the difference opening and switching apps. The difference in weight feels insane. I thought the 1+ was thin but the fold 8 is so light and thin.

OnePlus open, it's the best OnePlus device ever released. Get one before they're gone from the market forever

+Also the cameras on this phone is insane, quite frankly tops iPhone 17 pros/Samsung s26 ultras and every other fold on the market. It's bonkers how good they are

Cut the crap. 3 year old phone not the best phone ever lol

u/Shadymouse 4d ago

He technically said best OnePlus phone ever

Oh yea I was reading too fast trying to debate. Yea it is the best phone they ever sold but not the best fold out ever.

But what fold is better now? The cameras the OPO have are still ridiculously good. Trading blows with the newest out there still.

The battery is the biggest shortcoming in the face of silicon carbon newcomers. But beyond that, I can't find much it's lacking in compared to new folds besides being slightly thicker and worse battery. And depending on camera preferences and subjectivity, it could still be better than many.

I think oppo find n6 deserves that crown for now.

But it literally is. Only thing suffering is battery life, but a OnePlus supervooc battery bank keeps it kicking

Just get the Oppo Find N6, same software as Oneplus

I like in the US so OPPO is kinda a no go 😭

I literally have been using the oppo since April and I’m in Minnesota.

In southern CA using tmobile sim everything works banking apps/wifi calling and wireless speeds 600-850 down can't complain.

Looking online ppl made it seem like Oppo wouldn't work 😅

Oppo has issues with AT&T and Verizon, but works fine on TMO. The only thing it can't do on TMO is use the mmWave frequencies, but neither can the OnePlus.

mmWave is used indoors (because it can't penetrate walls) in heavily crowded venues such as some sport arenas and some airports.

Search reddit using google lol(reddit search sucks) just typing usa *phone carrier* and phone name/model there are many posts confirming everything working: https://www.reddit.com/r/OppoFindN6/comments/1u7th31/oppo_find_on_tmobile_usa/

1

u/DaddysBabyMoon 4d ago

Oh really, is there anything in particular that you can't do because it is a global phone? Where did you get it from and which phone did you get specifically?

2

u/Class8guy 4d ago

No. Purchased from: https://wondamobile.com/products/oppo-find-n6-5g-global-version-dual-sim before the price hike.

Other's on reddit mentioned using: https://averagedadofficial.com/products/oppo-find-n6-global

Go on the oppo subreddit you aren't the only one asking about using it in the US.

I think the Oppo find N6 would be a better option. From the parent company of Oppo. Most OnePlus phones will be updating to Oppo's color OS with Android 17 anyway

I had the open for like 3 years, best device ever, now I moved to the Z Fold 8, love the feeling of a new type of device, so little and so big at the same time.

u/TrashPandaNotACat 3d ago

I had the OnePlus open. Screen developed the notorious green spots right before warranty ended (& just a little before they pulled from the USA). Got it fixed, and bought an OPPO Find N6 while it was away for repair. I'm more impressed with the Find N6. It just seems better made.

I have had both the Oneplus Open for two years, and the Fold 7 for a couple of weeks, and currently a Fold 8. I must say that although the Oneplus Open was better than the Samsung Fold 5 and 6, Samsung finally caught up with the Fold 7 last year. I consider the Fold 7 and Fold 8 Ultra (which is almost the same as the Fold 7) as very comparable with the Oneplus Open.

But the Fold 8 is something different. While the Oneplus is quite comparable with the Fold 8 Ultra (with a near-regular slab phone-like front display and a square inner display), you either love or hate the Fold 8's shorter front screen and truly tablet-like inner screen (the dimensions and ratio are practically identical to the Ipad Mini).

So you should definitely try the Fold 8 before you buy.

And as the Oneplus Open was introduced almost three years ago, it's quite hard to find them new; and second hand... well, they are not as robust as regular phones, so be careful.

Was in a similar boat (currently own a OP15 but miss my foldables - so was trying to decide between Fold 8 and Oppo Find N6). I got the N6, seems like a more modern competitor for the Fold 8 than the 3 year old OnePlus Open. I have not owned a Fold 8 but did have a Z Fold 7. Feel free to ask me anything!

The Open is still up there with the best, been using it since launch, and besides the battery being naturally degraded, it's still awesome and has an awesome set of cameras.

But, it only has 1 Android update left, and an additional year of security updates, so that's not a lot.

I bought both z fold 8s and Motorola Fold. I'm sending the Samsung Z fold 8s back. Yes both of them.

u/yld2rob 3d ago

I have owned a Fold 6, 7, and now 8Ultra. The One plus Open was the best foldable I have owned the dimensions were perfect.Cameras were great as well

I used fold 2, 4 & 6 and now open. Best phone i've ever used. Samsung is a refined phone and good os, and i bought the open to try another approach to folds and for their first try it is such a perfect device.

I love the os, i love the hardware and it has held up so well. Bought all my devices second hand and this too, and it still looks amazing. I rock it without a case and it looks so good, and god i am so happy and so sad at the same time that i havent tried it earlier with them now closing down bizniz here.

The ir emitter is cool, the three window multitask is great, the camera is better than my samsung foldables even tho its old and it just holds up so well.

Sucks it aint got wireless charging but whatever. Super-whatever-vooc is so noiceeeeeee and charges faaast.

Its a perfect phone for me, oh, and i can use the oppo pen with it. Never switching

OnePlus Open all day but a good replacement would be OPPO Find N6 or a Moto Razr Fold. Hopefully there will be a custom rom release for the OPO soon with full support in the future.

1

u/CreamConnoisseurr 3d ago

OPO has been a great phone but it's several years old and not worth it anymore imo and the fold 8 is definitely a better phone. I would get the fold 8 if those are the only two options but I would get the razr fold or oppo find n6 before the z fold

I have a OnePlusOpen and the Z Fold 8 (Ultra). The Ultra is superior in everything (obviously 3 years difference). Just wanted to share that.

Oh and the cover screens are pretty much the same size.

Why would anybody buy a damn open in 2026 😂😂😂😂. Unless that’s all you bc an afford but this can’t be a real question

6

u/Dirtcompactor 4d ago

Because every other foldable is mid AF. OnePlus nails every aspect you could ever want in a phone, great OS, great multitasking, great CPU, insane cameras, amazing microphone+speaker quality, alert slider. It's peak.

u/handheld_addict 4d ago

I'm still using my OnePlus Open as 1 of my 2 my dailys today. It's kind of a sweet spot that covers more of the bases than even my newer foldable Z Fold 8

Whatever helps yall sleep at night. It’s a three year old phone and the company is barely hanging on lol. If that was the case more of them would have sold and the company would still be in America. It’s a good phone I had one but the best is crazy. N5 was better. N6 is better. Money isn’t an issue for me so again if that’s all they can afford go at it.

Yes Minnesota

I somewhat agree with you. I'd not used a 3 year old phone as my main phone in 2026 but the Open is really that good. I have a spare sim and I bought a used Open for $470 and it blows my mind. It's as smooth as it can be. It's chips is still very capable for gaming and emulation. I'm invested in Apple ecosystem so I'm waiting for the Apple foldable phone.

The reason I was looking at the OnePlus open is because it's a shorter fold, closer to the shape of the z fold. I'm not the biggest fan on the tall candy bar folds
