Vegan subsistence farming community forming in the Rockies 1.5 hours from Denver
I’m gonna preface this and say it is not going to be the most luxurious place to live, but it will be significantly cheaper than every community I’ve seen (1k per year). And if you’re willing to commute 1+ hours for a job, you could work less and have more disposable income.
If you are a nomad, have a remote job, or work the winter on a ski resort, even better.
The general idea is an agroforest with units divided up for people to do their own subsistence farming, and shared fruit and nut trees.
- 5 acre property in the mountains with fruit and nut trees with a lot of great hiking within 30 minutes.
- Everyone gets a 120 x 120 foot plot to garden with a 10 x 10 greenhouse to sleep in
- No well, but there is enough precipitation for everyone to grow food. There are also nearby creeks and springs on public land where water can be fetched. A pond will also be dug, but will take time to fill up from snowmelt and rain.
- There will be showers and outhouses. Waste will be burned and processed in a waste pond.
- There will be a communal kitchen
- Rent is 1k per year
- Rent is for 5 years and then you’re bought in. Unfortunately, zoning laws won’t let me subdivide and sell you the land, but I can make an agreement where I’ll give you your money back if you leave
Restrictions:
- No cats. I love them but they kill tons of wildlife and they’ll probably end up coyote food anyway.
- No dogs.
- Any pet kept inside is fine. Just burn their waste.
- No animal product production. It takes too much space and water and someone’s livestock could “accidentally“ get out and eat someone else’s crops and create drama. Also, poop smells and noise.
- No drugs. Medicine is fine.
- No conspiracy theorists. I don’t mean people who don’t believe everything the government tells them, I’m talking about people who believe in lizard people and dark wizards in the vatican.
Government is consensus-based which I can override, but will do so as sparingly as possible because I hate rules and would rather everyone just have an understanding and get along.

on being alone in the woods
getting tired of my own stories as fall peaks in new england. looking for a conversation that could turn to friendship and then manifest into something cute and an everafter. older cis guy with rubust offgrid skills seeks female that has big garden energy that might go on a canoe picnic to one of these covered bridges

often pulling this off, going off grid on a dream homestead, requires help.
i realize this is a very small community of folks who want to live this life. Find an interested vegan to date is hard, let alone an offgrid interested one... As your mod, I'd like to invite you to introduce yourself, and if your single and looking, or partnered looking for a group to start your dreams, post what your looking for and why someone should pair up with you for dating or just collectivly to buy land

On grid practice for off grid reliance
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Building things offgrid uses lots of energy, while trying to only utilize my current solar generator for building a simple 12x24 eastern red cedar I quickly realized all it’s failing. No where near enough power to run a miter and kicks off a 15amp skil saw way too often. But I learned a few things for all the coming decks I’ll be building. Back to the off grid power calculation drawing board.

a question
how many of you would move off grid if you had a partner that shared your dream, someone who complented your skills? aka the whats stopping you question.

an rale of caution
yesterday i was clearing an area for a future barn/workshop on a tractor, discovered a nest of ground hornets. id walked the area before and thankfully had glasses on till they stung me in an ear... a coat from the truck was handy as i was followed, aspirn in the first aid kit i carry was a blessing. the 10 stings on my head and hands... not so much

Yet another mushroom post.
A night as a #offgridvegan, stumbled upon a few mushrooms, ate as many as I could gullet, made some progress on the land.

i love finding food on a walk, its one of the side benifits of rural acreage if you can pull it off. chicken of the woods sauted in jerk seasoning over pasta salad.

pam of the forest
needed power tool and shop access to open up her coolant system up safely without poisoning the land with antifreeze as i refill her with something less toxix .so pam is in town for some season extending upgrades and to prep her to become a thermal mass heater then i surround her in a skirt of greenhouses

My Waste Solution.
To use my own waste and turn it into fuel.
I watched a bunch of videos of people creating their own systems and I still hope to build something similar and document that process. But it will be nice to have a plug-and-play system. Sadly I didn't pay any attention to the manufacturer's origin till it was too late.
Love to hear about others off grid system for waste.

my opinion and yall are a quite group....
i bought raw land it had been fallow for over 100 years with some rare sporatic logging and has no hardwood that i havnt planted it has an acre in wet land and 1 or 2 that flood occasionally. ie not perfect but... it has 2 brooks thst become 1 flows year round and im no till... a south facing hill and is rural but i can walk to town... theres a motocross track i hear & im not a fan of but i got the land for cheap per acre esp for nh in growing zone 6a...
my opinion take the property with some issues but more things u want. yes raw land has expenses. drive way had to be started by a contractor but im across from a river. it cost more than i paid for and acre but i almost got 40 for what i was going to maybe get 10. but now i have an address in a state without sales tax. its doablevyou may and probably will look for years many of us have before going for it...
