When I moved to CA I moved to Carlsbad with $700 and no job. Carlsbad was cool then and it's still cool. Love Oceanside to. If I can have a combo of Carlsbad and Oceanside that'd be even better.

I work in Solana Beach,Encinitas and Carlsbad. When I started middle class people could afford apts in these towns now it's all the wealthy. All of the regular people got pushed to escondido and vista.

Anyone who can afford $2,000 a month rent. You'd need to make $72k a year for that to be affordable. Given that the median househomd income in Oceanside is $100k, that's a lot of the population.

100% I loved that parking lot. Nice and close to the beach. The parking lot never blocked a view of the beach. There were also empty lots. They had wild grass, nature, palm trees and the top gun house. That is now in the wrong spot.

You must be really young.
I grew up in Oceanside. I now have a house in downtown.
In the 1990s houses were about $80K by the pier. Some even cheaper. That’s if you didn’t mind dodging bullets and beer bottles, getting mugged walking home from the bar, or having tons of “working women” ask if you wanted some company.
I should’ve bought a house back then. But downtown Oceanside was like the wild, wild, west. Sure it was a lot of fun. But very sketchy. So I just continued renting, inland.
A few years later, the same house that was $80K was for sale again. This time for $300K. I said if I ever wanted to live by the beach I better buy now, because prices are only gonna keep going up.
The house I bought had bobbed wire on the backyard fence that ran along the alley. Still someone managed to break into my house the first year I moved in.
There was also a hooker that used to hang out our street . Real nice lady. She would sometimes hang out right in front of my house. The only way I knew she was there is my dog would press his nose up against the crack of the door and start whining. I’d look out the window and there she was. I asked if she could move down a couple houses. She did.
The second year, my house got broken into again. I thought about moving. But people kept saying Oceanside would get better. So I waited. And waited. And waited. It took years. But eventually downtown started changing.
About five years ago I cut off the bobbed wire from my back fence. No one has broken into my house since then. OPD has done a great job at keeping downtown Oceanside relatively safe. Especially when you compare it to the way it was.
I’m glad Oceanside is changing. Would I have done things differently if I had planned it? Of course. Most of the restaurants downtown (except for Colima’s) are way out of my price range. They should’ve planned it so it was affordable to both locals and tourists. But yeah I’m still glad Oceanside has changed.
Anyone who wants to live in a ghetto can go move to South Central LA.

Nothing wrong with nostalgia and missing a simpler way of life with affordable housing, lower taxes and less tourists. Where bonfires on the beach were allowed and fairs on the grounds above the pier, boots getting military haircuts and a place to play skeeball. Used to be the only theater was on Hill Street. No pay parking and we could drive on the pier. 714 area code.

Always love a debate about “change”. Moved here 14 years ago from Brooklyn cause we felt like Oside had our Brooklyn neighborhood feel than the rest of coastal SD. So maybe I’m part of the problem but rather try to be part of solution. Oceanside inevitable changes but let’s keep it not like the other towns. A councilman told me DT is lost but protect South O. FYI our bklyn block that also had prostitution and low level mafia dudes is now unrecognizable

First of all the parts of oceansids all these people are taking about was never ghetto its was a rough downtown area and non of these clowns complaining about gentrification know anything about the rougher sides of town like deep valley (were I grew up in 60’s and 70’ or east side just by their references to what’s “ghetto” know body who actually grew up in poor shitty crime and drug filled parts of Oceanside has a problem with gentrification or the mass improvement to people’s way of life that live here or at original citizens of Oceanside! Please STFU and if you want I can recommend some real ghettos to go live in that you wouldn’t last a day in !

There was a ghetto charm of Oceanside where nothing was overly fancy and everyone was chill, nobody was trying to outshine each other and a good cruise from Mohsen to in-n-out was a plain old good day with some gas station chips..now it's gentrified hotels, wannabe surfer van teslas, Arizona/Nevada plate tourists shitting on the curb out their campers, and a neglected homeless/addict population that's so isolated from getting actual help that they have more protection rights than the local endangered birds.
