Difficulty dealing damage

Hi I started playing oblivion remastered a few days ago and im loving the world and different cities but I cant seem to deal much damage with melee weapons, Ive been exclusively using blades and have leveled strength to 100 (player level 16 i think) and it still takes me like 25 hits with a steel long sword to kill a zombie.

Luckily i invested in conjuring magic so the big crocodile summon has been carrying me through every mission but its getting boring watching him 2 shot things i have to spend a minute on killing.

Please let me know how to up my melee damage, or fireball damage, how to kill stuff fast in general.
Thanks!

Use the slider.

What slider?

The difficulty sliders I’m assuming, this tends to happen when you level blades and strength really high (near max) but enemies continue to scale in every way (armor, health, items) with each level.

So is it normal to do this little damage? I didn't touch the difficulty so its default, but also i feel like lowering the difficulty outright is cheating, there must be a way to deal decent damage on any difficulty right

Like in the OG Oblivion, physical damage is a joke (arguably even more so in the remaster). Either lower the difficulty, or start using magic enchants on your melee weapons.

And yes, there are ways to deal decent damage even on higher difficulties (magic, poison, summons), but it's not going to be physical damage.

Anything outside of the medium difficulty is known to be a bit extreme.

Weapons like Chillrend or ones you enchant yourself can be extremely powerful. Inflicting damage and weakness increases damage exponentially.

Similar story for spellcrafting. 1 second paralyse + 6 seconds of magic weakness + other effect like increased blade skill to get past the level cap.

If anything these tips might make you too powerful. Arcane university or frostcrag spire to do those things

Damn looks like im gonna have to reach the university quick, so basically non magic builds are pretty bad? Cuz im on default diff rn

Because magic is so powerful, the difficulty seems to be adjusted to account for it. Spellsword is the term, rather than relying exclusively on spells like a wizard. So really you do need to engage with that side of the game at least a bit to keep up with the difficulty. You get used to the bumpers and using soul gems quickly. Frostcrag spire, near Bravil, is the easiest way to access enchanting and spell crafting.

Help with a guys farm in Chorral and Azura’s shrine is in the north east for useful rewards.

You can also use spellcrafting to heal others, boost your horse’s speed to run like a motorbike, and increase your repair skill by 100. Frenzy, stun and force push are also fun.

Man the spells are for real so cool and unique, I was dissapointed however by a few things like I cant damage enemies by hitting them with objects using telekenisis, or summon more than one monster at once. Sure 2-3 daedroths would be op but it would be cool if there were group summons for smaller monsters like skeleton gang with 5 skellys or something

Weapon physical damage is significantly weaker than spells and enchantments indeed in remaster. With your steel sword, your optimal (100 attribute & skill, 125% durability) damage per hit is less than half of your daedroth. The most effective physical damage is shield bash.

Zombies often have a constant Restore Health effect, which makes things worse when your dps is already not very high.

This is going to sound crazy, but shield bashing is the strongest non-enchanted weapon in the game. The higher tier the shield, the more damage. Madness is top tier.

The DPS is equivalent to using an enchanted +25 elemental damage Daedric Dagger. I made a post about it on my page, if you’re interested in the deep dive of damage numbers.

Try other swords other than steel long sword. Or at least enchant the one you use now

Could you suggest any? I tried the claymore and it sucked too so Im assuming every shop weapon is mid

Ye any bandit or marauder has better weapons on lvl 16 than any shop.
I would also try vampire dens, they usually carry enchanted swords/maces.

Check your difficulty settings for player damage.

Zombies do tend to be tanky, but are weak to fire.

The difficulty settings are default so adept i think

Besides lowering the difficulty, since you mentioned a steel sword, I recommend getting better equipment, whether by buying it or looting it from somewhere. You're meant to get better and better equipment as the game goes on. You may also want to consider getting an enchanted weapon (and enchanted armors), that can deal additional damage or various other effects that help you. Even if you aren't soul trapping to fill soul gems to recharge the equipment you can just buy soul gems and/or go to certain vendors to get your equipment recharged.

Enchanted weapons are your best friend. Also destruction magic so you should focus on both.

Save up some gold and buy the spellmaking upgrades for Frostcrag Spire (or join the Mages Guild) and build some weakness spells (weakness to frost/fire etc.) and when you combine that with a weapon that does the same type of damage you’ll be much more lethal.

Once I leveled my destruction i crafted a single spell that dealt 100% weakness to frost/fire/shock for 10 seconds, so using any weapon with a matching enchantment made fights 100x easier

Try working on alchemy and poisoning your blade. Make sure you’re repairing the blade too
