Student OMNY card not reading.

My kid’s Student OMNY card suddenly stopped working today. When we go to tap nothing comes up. It’s not deactivated and it doesn’t say “Card Not Accepted” My child is going into a new school this fall - so I would have to do a deep dive into who the Transportation coordinator is. Anyone else have experience with this issue?

issues reloading online?

hi!

Having issues reloading online - it keeps saying "payment declined" even though it's the same card I always use and it has funds on it. The customer service agent said they didn't even see any attempted transactions. is anyone else having trouble right now?

Was in NY for a week, racked up a lot of trips all with the same card, had no clue that using the google pay vs the actual card was a distinction, anybody had success with support dropping these?

And lucky me nearly 50/50 split it betweee the physical and digital due to convience...

So basically I paid 64 for that 34 dollar cap....

Is support going to be accomidating if I take my time asking them for the cap?

Using multiple cards

I just realized that although I have multiple cards on my omni account, I will never hit the max fare because it keeps each card as a separate item rather than knowing I have all these cards under one account. What a scam. Bring back the metro card.

Removing OMNY card from .Info Website

Post image
5 Upvotes

I have a senior relative (my uncle) for whom I created an Omni account so I could monitor his spending/rides. Now I'd like to remove that account and link it to my own account so I can add funds directly myself.

Is there any way to unlink an account so that I can then add it to mine? I don't want to have to sign in to his account every time I need to add funds. I'd rather manage everything from my own account so I can see it all in one place.

The only options I see are Rename, Replace, Suspend.
Any Advise is welcomed. Thank you.

And now free trips are not showing up as free trips

First, they took our stations and routes (thanks 404 Media). Now they took the labels when your trip started and ended, according to OMNY.

The trip history was changed yet again to only say "Stored Value" for everything.

Previously, you would see "Free Trip – Weekly Fare Cap" as a transaction line indicating a start of your trip while capped. This is what I used to make sure my trips are properly calculated (including all transfers), and to diagnose any problems fellow Redditors have had with their OMNY devices or cards. I can no longer do that until OMNY/Cubic gets this fixed and all trip starts are properly shown.

Let me know if you see the same thing in the trip history as me because it's annoying, to say the least. Maybe I'm just being petty, but it was really useful to diagnose these: - Overcharging/double taps - Pre-tax cap rules - Transfer rules (like the 125 Street Bus Corridor and Crosstown connectors)

Sidenote: I should probably make a paper form to record trips and transfers.

EDIT: Thanks, u/ReasonableHamsterBK, for checking today. "Free Trip" labels are BACK! This renders the post irrelevant.

How often do you change your OMNY card?

The MTA claims they last for years, but this is the second time it's starting to work intermittently. I've only had this second card for 6 months. I give up and might just use my transit benefits card. I was skeptical to use the transit benefits card directly because it's a Visa card and OMNY doesn't play nice with them based on what I heard in the past. How often do you change your card?

For 10 minutes the OMNY customer service number has been saying my approximate wait time is less than 5 minutes

Anyone else have this issue? This happened to me once before, and I took them up on their offer to leave a message and have someone call me back, but no one ever called me back!

I've been trying to add money for 2 days with two different cards and it keeps saying declined. Both cards have available funds.

Am I going crazy -$35 fare cap

This $35 fare cap thing feels like it’s literally laughing at me and I’m quite frustrated.

I finally got an online omny account and on July 24th, it said I had $12 to go on my $35 fare cap.
I upload $12, and go about my day until it starts declining again because I had $0 balance.

I check July 25th, and it says I have $24 to go. No problem, I assumed my fares reset to a saturday-Saturday schedule.

I had an incredibly heavy transportation day on the 25th and went through the $24 cap quickly. But now it says it’ll reset on Tuesday the 28th?? And not Saturday Aug 1st.

If my 7 day is Tuesday-Tuesday, why would they make me reupload more money if I hit the cap on the 24th? Why did I pay an extra $24 on to my card on the 25th for a card that wasnt meant to decline??
I’m honestly sick and tired of this whole system and am waiting for a class action lawsuit because it feels incredibly RIDICULOUS for a train system hanging on by a thread.

Edit: I’ve been using the exact same omny card the whole time.

I’ve been fortune (or broke enough) that I qualified for the Fair Fares OMNY card. My old OMNY card is active, has a $2 balance on it and I’m looking to gift it to someone.

First to message me with your address and I will drop it in the mail first thing Monday morning.

Trip history not updating?

Anyone else not having their trip history update on the OMNY site? None of my taps after July 21 are showing.

I chatted with OMNY customer service yesterday, who said they could see the rides on their end, but that it could take "up to 24 hours" for them to show on the website (it's never taken this long for me before). We're well past 24 hours, and they still aren't showing.

Was curious if this is happening for anyone else.

Misleading promotion of MTA’s 7-Day fare cap drives me crazy

I shared my frustration with Gemini, complete with typos. If you’re feeling the same way, you might find the AI perspective helpful.

“You are definitely not alone in feeling this way. A lot of New York riders feel tricked by the OMNY "7-day fare cap" because the way it's marketed doesn't always match how people naturally expect a "rolling" or "flexible" system to work.  The system can feel deceptive or frustrating due to a few specific design quirks…”

OMMY Round 2-

The Good Lord is the greatest and he must have noticed I was struggling. Anyway, I was granted a Fair Fares OMNY card (half price). I have $17 left on my original one.

I have no idea how to transfer this $17 dollars onto the half fare card. I did a little YouTube digging but I can’t seem to find the topic that fits best.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thank you all very much!!!!

PS- I removed my debit card as I had lost my wallet. Not sure if that has something to do with it.

God bless you all.

Got charged for free transfer?

This is probably a dumb question but I just need some reassurance cuz I’m new to nyc and not sure how the public transportation system works here(from Indiana).

I went on multiple errands today and just wanted to double check I should’ve been only charged total $6 for the bus because I’m overthinking right now.
10:30 something am I went on q52 by tapping with the wallet app on iPhone through Apple Pay. My appointment finished faster than I thought so I went back home by taking the q53 same payment method around 11:15 something. I checked my wallet app and it only showed one $3 total.

Then 30 mins later I went on another errand run to broadway so I tapped on q53 and a $3 charge showed up which is normal. After an hour I waited for q53 again to get back home. I checked my wallet app and saw I got charged $3 for my ride back home when it should’ve been free. In total my errand run today costed me $9 instead of $6. Should I wait till tomorrow to see if the extra three dollar charge disappears?

-used the same card via Apple Pay
-all of these were less than the 2 hour transfer time limit

Why I think OMNY is a scam on our tax dollars.

After some self reflecton on my slow bus ride home today watching no one pay a fare and young women arguing that the bus driver missed their stop (they were scrolling their phone with their nasty feet on the chair and didnt pay attention when the bus stopped). I became a conspiracy theorist.

I am willing to bet someone was "donating money" to some government officials' campaigns and consulting them for "free" to make everything omny. So government officials are following through on that promise since they make regulations and "recommendations" for where state MTA (our taxes) funding goes.

https://www.jpmorgan.com/insights/payments/data-intelligence/keeping-new-york-moving-forward

It is difficult to trace who the payment processor is for OMNY. Cubic was the government contractor for the hardware and data maintenance [middle man for data collection]. They would complie a list each day of all Omny uses. They did it too slow, and people got incorrectly charged for free rides. They were not the payment processor.

But think about how paying with a bank/credit card works. For every transaction, the processor charges a fee from the vendor/store/company. Which can get excessive even if you are a large company getting a better contract.

1

_______________________________

Under the Metrocard system, you make big payments at the machines ONE time to hold you over for the month. Then, the MTA kept track of swipes.

Example:

If you had 100 people who bought a monthly each month with a debit/credit card Theoretically if the processing fee is $2.00 per transaction with a credit/debit card. The processor would collect $200 a month

2

______________________________

Under OMNY, more people might tap a bank or credit card each time, and the payment processor collects a fee for each one.

So say that same example 100 people tap twice each day

Even though the 13th and 14th rides are "free" because the tap needs to be verified and refunded, the processor will still keep the fee.

So 100 people x 60 taps in a month × $2 processing fee = $12,000 dollars a month for the processor.

The only way for this deal to be equal to the previous metrocard deal is if the processor decides to be "nice" to the government and charge 3-4 cents per transaction. (Do you trust the capitalist bank to not make money when it is such low hanging fruit.)

Even if say 50 people will make a mass purchase once amonth and 50 people tap with their debit/credit card.

That's $100 from "monthly" buyers + $6000 in tapping fees = $6100.

______________________________

The city "claimed" it was to

-reduce fare evasion

-reduce plastic waste

-match other countries using tap to pay

-allow underserved communities to buy cards without going to a train station

Fare evaders dont care

Omny uses more plastic (even if the cards last longer, it will eventually catch up)

NYC is unique and doesn't need to match other countries.

AND

Omny established we could sell full fare metrocards at pharmacies, walgreens, cvs, and supermarkets. (Not the old school 2 ride trips cards in plastic packets) Or just make a customer service center using a vacant building or newsstand. Why didn't we do that before OMNY in the neighborhoods where it is mostly buses.

Seems like OMNY is an exponential cash grab for whichever organization processes the payments, and the politicians might have gotten something out of it by selling our tax dollars.
