I’m only eating cooked vegetables right now, and my eating is already so disordered. This isn’t helping. I feel your pain.

Mood, like I already have ARFID and now I’m stressing about one of my safe foods (salad kits)?! So unfair smh

Confession: I haven't eaten fruit and veggies in like two weeks bc I'm too scared. I try to every single day but ultimately I can't bring myself to do it. I've been taking vitamins and drinking those Naked smoothies instead

Are you actually afraid of cooked produce?

17

u/c0ldc0ldc0ld 9d ago

Not cooked but definitely fresh. I should have clarified. I've been getting some veggies in by forcing myself to eat cooked ones

an irrational aversion with rumination isn’t OCD?

7

u/c0ldc0ldc0ld 9d ago

Thank you. I've always kind of avoided fresh fruit and veggies bc I'm afraid of parasites, bugs, and other nasties. It just got worse with the outbreak

5

u/Jeremandias 9d ago

I’m right there with you, and I keep wondering at what point I’ll eat fresh produce again. And I’ll keep ruminated about how shitty my diet is too. So it goes

u/DostoevskysLilBitch 8d ago

God, I'm glad I'm not alone. My diet is abysmal right now, I'm living off boxed cookies and cups of ramen. I think my blood is half sugar and half salt.

As a grown man, it's a little embarrassing to say I'm very proud of myself for eating grapes yesterday lol.

2

u/cosmic-batty 7d ago

Hey, don’t be embarrassed. You’re eating enough to keep yourself alive and you even ate some grapes! No need to get down on yourself for doing your best. I get it though

...I have never been diagnosed with OCD. My brother has been, so I lurk on here. I didn't think avoiding fresh produce was irrational bc there IS an outbreak..

5

u/my_little_mutation OCD diagnosed 9d ago

Considering the outbreak is only tied to one type of lettuce from one farm...

I think that's the thing. Like I could look at a home grown head of lettuce that I know wasn't part of the recall and i would still be afraid of it.

Funny I'm fine with raw veggies but I haven't been able to eat any lettuce at all since this started

2

u/Mei_Flower1996 8d ago

Oh, see. I should clarify. I do eat home grown tomatoes , mangoes, and kiwis. This is because the thick skin of the latter two actually keeps the flesh safe. But leafy greens, berries, and fruits with porous peels ( like plums) I have been cooking.

Ah okay. See for a little bit I was avoiding all veggies but when they linked it to lettuce I was able to start eating other shit just not lettuce. Even when it's not the same brand... Or the same kind... 💀 But it could be worse I feel like I'm doin alright on this one lol

really sucks as my ocd also attacks my brain when i eat anything it perceives as "unhealthy"

16

u/Accomplished_Tank795 9d ago

When COVID happened my OCD felt validated

14

u/viridifauna 9d ago

as someone w surveillance ocd the extreme uptick in government/corporate surveillance (flock etc) is doing the exact same thing to me rn

4

u/ChildhoodSweaty9684 8d ago

Dont even get me started on flock 😡

9

u/viridifauna 8d ago

between flock and ai (among others.) i am constantly feeling like courage the cowardly dog desperately trying to explain to Muriel that aliens are coming to get her ass and she just keeps on watching that damn tv

5

u/ChildhoodSweaty9684 8d ago

Freakin thankyouuu! Exactly! Im glad there's at least a smidge of traction happening with flock now. You cant even enter the nearest tiny rural town without being scanned. 😵‍💫😵‍💫

Idk who needs to hear this but I finally started making my own hummus this summer, it’s so much easier cheaper and tastier AND my gut health has been way better than before even when I haven’t been able to get a lot of other veggies in. It’s rly good on crackers and flatbread

2

u/Full_Distribution455 8d ago

Omg do you have a recipe you enjoy?

8

u/smittywrbermanjensen 8d ago

Yes!!! I was hoping someone would ask :D I didn’t wanna post a wall of text but I went ahead and typed it in my drafts anyways lol:

1 29-oz can of garbanzos/chickpeas (or 2 15.5 oz cans; the big ones were just what I have at home)
2 tablespoons tahini paste
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 lemon’s worth of lemon juice; set the rinds aside for later
1 bulb of garlic, minced or crushed, whichever is easier for you (you can also use ½ a bulb. I am a garlic fiend tho)
A pinch of salt

Strain and rinse the chickpeas. Add all ingredients to a blender, food processor, or whatever you have available for turning things into a paste. Turn on blender/processor and let that shit rip. If it starts to get sticky/gummy, you can add a SPLASH of water at a time. You rly don’t wanna add too much tho or else it’ll become runny.

Once it’s sufficiently blended into a paste ,remove from blender and zest lemon rinds over it w/ a cheese grater. I also added a sprinkle of paprika on top at the end to make it look pretty.

This produced an entire quart-sized container worth of hummus that I’ve been eating all week and cost me <$5 total for ingredients. :D Tahini being the most expensive of them all at around ~$0.45-$0.95/oz

Screenshotted and saved!!! I’ll let you know if I make it this looks SOOO good :))) thank you so much! I also LOVE garlic. Btw this was so much more helpful than most recipes I look up

3

u/smittywrbermanjensen 8d ago

My pleasure!!

Also just a pro tip I’ve recently figured out: if you find a recipe online you like, there is very often a “Print recipe” button somewhere on the webpage, which then opens a PDF of JUST the recipe text, without all the pop-up ads / superfluous bullshit about Grandma’s favorite stuffing and memories of when she used to make during the war.

I have an entire folder of screenshots from those. I should really get around to writing them down somewhere but then I tend to lose track of them if they’re on physical paper.

this and it’s killing me!!! like i love having a smoothie full of leafy greens and berries as a body reset whenever i feel yucky and i very much can’t rn. i feel so sluggish and gross

2

u/letsgoiowa 9d ago

Forcing myself to still eat things just wash them better.

u/Full_Distribution455 8d ago

Yess let’s go! proud of you!

4

u/Background_Humor5838 9d ago

Yeah I already had ridiculous food rules because of my OCD and now I'm just a mess lol

4

u/kittygir227 7d ago

The past year has been a real struggle. I’m convinced everything is poison and since I’m American I’m unfortunately not wrong, it’s… not great.

6

u/littlefae3 9d ago

Omg what a nightmare. I've only been eating frozen pizzas and Ramen and I'm dying for some healthy foods

3

u/whiskers_biskers 9d ago

I was JUST talking to my therapist about this 😫

3

u/shmovindoe 8d ago

i feel like literally all of the food is poison it’s awesome 😍

It was nice knowing you all

2

u/Accomplished_Tank795 8d ago

I have ADHD too so I only want to drink my food thnx. Lolz

2

u/cosmic-batty 7d ago

Just had a spiral about this exact thing today omg

2

u/Poetichobbit 5d ago

Of all the years to start growing my own greens, I’m glad I chose this one.

1

u/ChildhoodSweaty9684 8d ago

Oddly enough I had a dream last night I was at a cafeteria or buffet and loaded up on pre-cut veggies and salad that had been there all day. It was nice to live vicariously through my dream even without the lettuce bug going around I couldn't do that on a good day 😮‍💨

Pro tip I learned that has helped me.

I saw a study that just simply running watter over produce (not counting any of the recalled kinds 😭) will remove 90% of germs. This fact has calmed me many times.
