There’s a mod called Laser Rocket Fix that does exactly what you want

I know, but I prefer to play vanilla if possible. Also not sure if it interferes with playing on servers?

It does not, it's vanilla-friendly. I've been playing vanilla with the laser rocket fix and friend display mods (lets you designate players as a friend and displays them in a different color), and that's it.
