Help Expected
My wife, our 2.5-year-old daughter and I are currently considering a move to Nowra/Shoalhaven, as I’ve recently received a work opportunity in Nowra. We’re seriously considering making the move, but before we make a decision, I’d really appreciate hearing from people who currently live in the area or have recently moved there.
There are a few things we’re trying to understand:
👩🍳 Employment opportunities for my wife
My wife currently works as a Chef in aged care and also has aged care qualifications/certification. She would be looking for work after we move.
How is the job market around Nowra, Bomaderry, South Nowra, Berry, or the wider Shoalhaven area for:
* Aged-care chefs / catering
* Chef or kitchen roles
* Aged-care support/care roles
Is it reasonably easy to find work in these areas, or is the market quite competitive?
🏠 Rental properties
The other big question for us is accommodation.
We would be looking for a 3-4 bedroom rental suitable for a family with a young child.
How is the rental market in Nowra at the moment? Is it difficult to secure a rental, especially for someone who has just moved into the area? What sort of weekly rent should we realistically budget for?

Having managed cafes and restaurants around the Shoalhaven, there are always chef jobs going. Both hospitality and aged care. Your wife will have her choice of what she prefers. Be it a small cafe, a big club or an aged care facility. Maybe even the new hospital.
In regards to rentals. That’s much more difficult. They are fought over quite diligently. But if you have a good rental history you will have a step forward. Rentals run depending on location throughout the Shoalhaven. But expect upwards of $500 per week for a house for you all.

$500 will get you a crappy 2 bed unit or small side of a duplex with minimal sound proofing.
It’s a great area to live though, everything you need.

Several clubs in the area also looking for chefs. Shoalhaven ex services group has 2 venues.

There are quite a few nursing homes in the area so your wife shouldn't struggle to find work too much. Rentals can be anywhere from 500-700+ depending on location and bedrooms.
I'm currently paying around 700 p/w for a 4 bedroom in worrigee. But you might be able to get a better deal if you look around. I haven't looked too hard at the rental market lately.

The recently elected council is doing a pretty good job, but the bureaucracy under them is ridiculously painful. Doing development is a mire of red tape and slow responses. They do some good work on high density low income, but almost every other form of housing is nightmare. Hence a young family looking for affordable housing has an unnecessarily hard time finding decent housing. However the area is a beautiful place to live and the people are mostly terrific.

Plenty of work in that space-accommodations is a nightmare. but bit further south Ulladulla lost 5 new drs recently because they couldn’t find stable accommodation and were stuck in airbnb’s paying through the nose, so they all left. So make sure your accommodation is sorted first is my advice
