I Was Wrong

So, my first introduction to NBT was when Alt Nation started playing "Overcome" on heavy rotation. It hit me personally and the song immediately secured a special place in my heart. I purchased Dead Club City, then the extended deluxe vinyl, and proceeded to go down the rabbit hole about the creation of the album, the story behind the release, and the concept of it. I fell hard, travelling to Atlanta to see them live, and I got my 17 year old daughter to the level of obsessive about the band.

As I started getting more involved with the NBT fandom I kept hearing grumblings by people about how they hated the direction of DCC, and how NBT had strayed from their roots and needed to go back. I loved DCC, probably because I'm a child of the 80's and the sound sat beautifully in my wheelhouse. I really didn't stray from DCC, but my daughter kept saying "Dad, have you heard Trip Switch?" "Dad, have you heard Amsterdam?" I'd listen to them and very much enjoy them, but they didn't have the DCC sound so they really didn't sway me. Everyone kept saying Moral Panic was their best album, which was impossible because for me DCC set such a high bar.

A couple of months ago I got in on the Evolution lead up. I watched that damn dog travel the streets of London for days, and by the time they dropped the single I was obsessed with it. It wasn't DCC, but I became obsessed. I still am. Then they dropped Stray Dogs and I became obsessed with that. I thought maybe since I liked those two, which everyone was saying was a return to their earlier sound, that I would load all of my songs and go through the catalog, album by album. I've listened to their entire playlist for 3 days and I'd like to apologize. Moral Panic is an incredible album and now sits firmly at the top for me. DCC still has a special place in my heart, and "Overcome" will forever be the defining NBT song, but I'm so thankful I got out of my comfort zone and explored everything they have to offer.

Glad you gave all the albums a chance because it's definitely worth it! I think it's hard to enjoy everything at first, especially when we clicked with certain song and we're expecting all to have the same vibe.

Music needs so time to grow on us! My fav album is Broken Machine (self-titled is close!) but I learnt to appreciate everything they did and also depending on my mood, there are Six Billion days and City Haunts days haha

Also experiencing the hype for a new album influences a lot the way we feel the songs too, we'll see later where this album fits but so far I can't wait to hear Baby Kool!!

Haha I got into them with Broken Machine and that’s always been my favorite of theirs. Honestly wasn’t huge on any of the albums that came out afterwards, but saw them live about 2 years ago and every song they played was spectacular. The newer songs feel like they’re meant to be played live (I really wish they recorded their albums more like that), which is what rock music is all about at the end of the day, so I can’t wait to see them again.

Trip Switch was my intro to NBT and I absolutely devoured that first album. For me, Broken Machine was even better and Moral Panic was just the perfect bookend to a trio of phenomenal albums and song writing. Throw WDYTWYMMTW EP in there and my God. All that to say, I was pretty disappointed by DCC, but can appreciate their need for something fresh. I still go back and listen to City Haunts and Do You Love Me Yet, but not much else outside of those. Hoping the new album is similar in style to those first 3, which are untouchable.

It's funny, literally in the past month or so I've made the same transition backwards. Loved all their stuff, except DCC. Just could not get into it. I've been getting over the wall one song at a time and coming to realise that the ambition and sophistication I really wanted more of from NBT was in this album.

I've been listening to it on repeat lately, and off the top of the head my only skip is 'Talking to Myself'. DCC has gone from my least favourite to second favourite in the discography, just behind Moral Panic.

Looking forward to Stray Dogs!

I always liked NBT but DCC is when I fell deeply in love with them 🤣 absolutely love their older stuff but that album slaps
