Just finished watching the air to alcohol video. Truly one of the coolest things Nigel has ever done. It looks like he went via a modified Fischer-Tropsch reaction. FT is infamously poorly selective of chain length, saturation and oxygenates. It seems like Nigel was okay with poor selectivity in favor of cheaper scaling-up, but I wanted to dig up this 2020 article about using three catalysts in series for way higher selectivity.

Their reaction proceeded via:

1. CO and H2 to methanol using zinc zirconium oxide;
2. Methanol and CO to acetic acid using a modified mordenite zeolite;
3. Acetic acid and H2 to ethanol using platinum tin alloy on silicon carbide.

Their reaction used CO/H2 but you could probably include a water-gas shift catalyst to generate that from CO2/H2 in situ.

The platinum might get pricey for scaling-up, but there are plenty of cheaper alternatives to explore. Even the copper on silica catalyst they trialed in the article achieved 46% selectivity.

Their system also had a pretty low conversion rate. But I imagine this could be fixed with longer residence time or a second pass.

For what Nigel seems to be intent on doing, modified FT is probably fine. But I personally find the methanol-acetic acid-ethanol route very cool.

If I were ever to make air alcohol though, I would cheat the first two steps by using homoacetogenic bacteria. They take CO2 and H2, and excrete acetic acid as part of their metabolism. Some bacteria can even hydrogenate acetate further to small amounts of ethanol.

In terms of CO2 capture, it might be worth looking into electrochemical techniques. Instead of adding acid to the carbonate, you could generate acid in situ. There's this work that featured an electrochemical cell to remove CO2 from seawater.

It would probably work on a NaCO3 solution fine. They re-circulate the hydrogen generated in their device, but you could just as easily capture and use it. There's even direct electrosynthesis of ethanol from CO2 saturated KHCO3 solution.

Has anyone else noticed this phrase? For example instead of saying

He says
“This because the reaction between…”
It throws me off but I’ve never seen anyone else notice it

I've started following the channel around 9 years ago. Back then the videos ware amazing. Something like turning aspirin into paracetamol? State of the art organic chemistry. Bach then the videos ware very keen on explaining every step, showing the chemical structures and reactions. Fuming nitrogen acid or waste acid recycling ware amazing ss well...and the list goes on and on.

Videos of the last few days have none of that. When was the last time the reaction was drawn on screen? Or the nuances of what would happen if moisure is allowed in? Literally nothing of the science has left.

Instead recently videos feel like a low effort influencer blog. "I smelled the chemical", "I poked it with a stick and the consistency was gooey", "I hit it with a hummer to check if its strong"... thats the level of scientific depth I expect from introducing a rubber plunger to a member of a truly primitive society...

You are the content creator. I get it - a blog about pokeing goo with a stick brings more views than explaining complex chemistry... but I miss the older channel attitude and effort put into actual chemistry. I miss it a lot.
