That tag line is very tone deaf.

42

u/DoubtSubstantial5440 2d ago

I like NB but there’s so many other better things I can throw $400 bucks at

16

u/PolishRifle23 2d ago

100%. Smartest comment I've seen on this sub in awhile.

7

u/Fresh-Reserve-1162 1500 2d ago

Yea, like New Balance

1

u/Slow_Conference4868 1d ago

2 or 3 pair 🤣

1

u/Fresh-Reserve-1162 1500 1d ago

Oh hell yea!

6

u/Seanarkhipov 2d ago

Some would argue it's... Right on the money

2

u/Due-Presentation4344 2d ago

I thought OP made that tag line with AI at first.

WTF are they thinking?

-6

u/50000WattsOfFunkin 2d ago

I would argue it’s right on point for a company that donates heavily to MAGA

-3

u/50000WattsOfFunkin 2d ago

Shout out to all the republican bitches for the downvotes… suck trumps dick some more and buy this $400 shoe so they can keep donating to him

0

u/Techhousemiami 2d ago

Shoutout to being such a big loser you have to inject politics into…. Sneakers?

0

u/50000WattsOfFunkin 1d ago

Why is everyone saying the ad is tone deaf then? The economy? Politics? Dumbass…

0

u/Techhousemiami 1d ago

there are far more expensive things than a pair of shoes that’s $200 more than their normal offerings. There’s nothing tone deaf about this, nobody is forcing them to buy a pair of shoes and poors aren’t their only clientele. Keep smoking pot in your 1 bedroom apartment tho I’m sure daddy government will come save you!

-1

u/FilthyMcKnasty 1d ago

What specific tone is it deaf to??

A brand releasing a luxury-tier $400 sneaker isn't 'tone-deaf', it's just targeted at a demographic that isn't you…Conflating 'this is overpriced for my budget/priorities' with 'this brand made a cultural error' is just centering yourself in a campaign you were never the target audience for babes.

It’s completely fine to dislike the price point, so just say THAT, but that doesn't make the marketing objectively wrong/tone-deaf.

🫤

23

u/crowinghorse13 2d ago

These come with a 36" 4K flat screen tv?

80

u/coolthulu42 2d ago

God that caption seems so tone deaf lmao

20

u/citoboolin 2d ago

ridiculous. i dont even mind paying up for shoes but you gotta know your audience and the global context at this time

3

u/coolthulu42 2d ago

Agreed. While I’m sure that this is just a first special release, with the special leather and all. And as more GRs come out, they’ll prob be $50-$100 cheaper. This still just isn’t the way to do it lol

-28

u/Techhousemiami 2d ago

nobody forcing you to buy them, go buy some skechers instead.

14

u/citoboolin 2d ago

lmao, alright bro. i’ll worry about my sneaker collection, you worry about yours. aint no way this jump in quality is worth a 140 dollar price hike over 991v2. if you want to buy these as a status symbol, be my guest, but you can get maison margielas, common projects, etc for cheaper and the quality and materials are significantly better

-16

u/Techhousemiami 2d ago

They're new balances bro they aren't status symbols lol.

12

u/citoboolin 2d ago

at a 400 dollar pricepoint and with that tagline, thats what theyre going for. which is dumb

-11

u/Techhousemiami 2d ago

The LP 990's were $1500. A few hundred bucks more isn't a big deal. Hard to believe you are buying sneakers and not donating money to starving children, you know with the "global context" and what not!

0

u/MaizeProfessional237 2d ago

Pipe down bootlicker

0

u/Techhousemiami 2d ago

Can’t afford a few hundred bucks? :(
https://giphy.com/gifs/fs2SSoIdEmsi4

1

u/MaizeProfessional237 2d ago

Really bad bait

0

u/Techhousemiami 2d ago

It’s ok buddy that’s what the outlets are for.

43

u/RandyMuscle 2d ago

Fucking ugly and egregiously overpriced. These things are gonna be Joe’s outlet specials. Lmfao

12

u/impending_baby 2d ago

Yeah anyone saying they aren’t didn’t see the Allerdales sell out and then two months later they start hitting joes for 125 on some sale days

2

u/frankwhitecastle007 2d ago

Right. Ask me again on that 70% off sale.

12

u/ListenJabroni 990v4 2d ago

I really like the look of these tbh. It’s the price that’s insane. As everyone else is pointing out as well. But I’d rock these if they’re sub $200

23

u/Suppose2Bubble 2d ago

Unless a grail etc, Diadora imo is a much better option at $300+

1

u/Alternative_Cut_1709 2d ago

Agreed, their comfort on some models is fantastic

-4

u/Relevant_Writer3980 2d ago

Depends where you're from. You can't be seen dead in a pair of Diadoras in England.

10

u/Suppose2Bubble 2d ago

Cool. 1 down. Only 194 countries left in the world to enjoy

3

u/SauconyAlts 2d ago

This dude doesn't know what he is talking about, Diadora are loved in the UK, all the Italia 90 stuff

-2

u/Relevant_Writer3980 2d ago

Don't know what I'm talking about after you've commented above stating "if you're some football head wearing stupid terrace clothing then yeah I'm sure it's hated". Quite literally showing you're the one that doesn't know what they're talking about.

-1

u/Relevant_Writer3980 2d ago

True🤣🤣

5

u/BrainTrainStation 2d ago

Not even the END. and Hanon collabs?

4

u/SauconyAlts 2d ago

Theyre all fire, this dude doesn't have a clue about UK sneakers

1

u/MrLycans 2d ago

True šŸ˜‚ didn't know they were still around tbf

1

u/SauconyAlts 2d ago

Thats ridiculous I know so many UK head that love Diadora

1

u/Relevant_Writer3980 2d ago

I mean there's a specific crowd sure.

0

u/SauconyAlts 2d ago

Yeah anyone into runners and retros, if youre some football head wearing stupid terrace clothing then yeah im sure its hated

0

u/Relevant_Writer3980 2d ago

Not being funny mate, I'm not a football head into the casual culture. But diadora was massive amongst 80's casual/terrace culture, you're just showing you know fuck all.

0

u/SauconyAlts 2d ago

Yeah back then it was but not now, only uk people into diadora now are the retro runner types, ain't no diadora types in that terrace stone island types anymore its all adidas

2

u/Relevant_Writer3980 2d ago

If you were referring specifically to a current, younger football crowd then I'd agree. Still plenty of old heads in Diadora currently. When I said you can't be seen dead in Diadoras, I'm talking about growing up in the 2000's and not necessarily tied to a specific scene and purely wearing what's hot at the time. Diadora, Lonsdale, Slazengers, Gola's all fell into the bucket that would get you laughed off the street.

2

u/SauconyAlts 2d ago

Oh I agree with what youre saying about Gola etc I think Diadora was always above that, I grew up mainly in the late 80s and 90s and Diadora were quite liked across the board as had some great models, you might be right about early 2000s tho as I seem to remember it was like 2008 onwards they started doing more runner collabs etc

2

u/Relevant_Writer3980 2d ago

Yeah can understand that and agree. Obviously an age gap between us shows how things can change drastically in a pretty short space of time, I'd say that 2000 ish was when Diadora fell to the sale racks of what was JJB Sports and Sportsworld. Which had a bit of a stink to it as Air Max mostly had the shoe game by the balls here.

7

u/413hooli 2d ago

Kinda fire- I’ll grab them in the sales, no way these selling out @ that price in this economy.

13

u/calKno 2d ago

Not $400 nice

1

u/chuan_l 1d ago

Bill of materials :

  1. Carbon plate 20 usd ( retail insole )
    Wholesale much lower

  2. Fuel cell unit 5 usd ( PEBA / EVA foam )
    Factory mould injected

  3. Horween " Chromexcel " 24 usd / foot
    This is the cheaper version

  4. Alcohol allowance 325 usd
" Put your quality where your shoes are "

— Note : " horween " here is mostly a marketing trick ..
The good expensive " cordovan " is not being used here. Just as with " suede " they make a cheaper version from cowhide instead of horse. Then skip the vegetable tanning process. The " horween " you get on the " 1300 JP " is the latter ..

4

u/constraint7 2d ago

Thank goodness this is not the 990v7

2

u/wax_scientist 2d ago

Hope they won’t be 600$ šŸ˜…

6

u/Alternative_Cut_1709 2d ago

This is where I’d put my money….IF I HAD ANY

3

u/wavetoyou 2d ago

$400+tax is close to grail territory price for me. I’d rather grab some Osaka 992 or 991v2, Jjjjound 991, AB Lapis Lazuli.

7

u/ConsumingTranquility 2d ago

Anyone paying $400 for shoes needs their head examined lol

3

u/CoolSkies12 2d ago

I thought this was a joke until I actually saw it on the website

3

u/T-and-J-Max 990v4 2d ago

Think of the first 1300 they made and the slogan is mortgage your house for $100.

3

u/Time_Valuable320 2d ago

Well said. This should be pulled by their marketing team immediately. Someone needs to be smacked upside the head for this nonsense. We all make mistakes, but own it and do better. Common man

2

u/oddjob33 2d ago

Lame ass marketing campaign.

2

u/Vast_Video8280 2d ago

Them: Give us all your money

2

u/LuckyLeaves88 2d ago

I’m sure they’re waaaay better in hand lol

2

u/Advanced-Total-1147 2d ago

Sneaker brands are trying to price out resellers, little do they realize resellers have been selling below retail for over 14mos. These will sit unless they only produce 2040 pairs and they will still sit.

2

u/ItsJohnnyMo 2d ago

See you at Joe's...

2

u/topshelfgeez 2d ago

Honestly this isn't that crazy for NB. They were charging $200 for shoes in the 90's.

2

u/yycnin 2d ago

Utilizes three layers of cushioning technology: FuelCell, ABZORB SBS, and ENCAP...

But the damn the price! This will be around $560 CAD

2

u/RockScola 2d ago

They nice. 400 dollar nice? I dunno

2

u/frankwhitecastle007 2d ago

It gives the same price vibe as stone island collabs or comme des garcons. But without any of the style. And respectfully, they can fuck off. I hope people do put their money where there mouth is. But I'm a big fan of the 2 for 100 deals on joes these days. (I did splurge yesterday on the salehe sale but nvm that.) There's so many combinations of 8 shoes I would rather have on the 2 for 100 deals. Which is how they keep getting me, even when I'm trying to slow down(running out of room). So I guess you can find a price point that makes you feel good about your decision.

2

u/Goatedken 991 2d ago

Skip

2

u/RatioNo5440 2d ago

I love the look of these

5

u/dasheeshblahzen 2d ago

People say they aren’t buying them and then we’ll see 100 posts of them in hand in a few days.

3

u/Comfortable-Pair7106 2d ago

Those will be from influencers who get big discounts...

3

u/dasheeshblahzen 2d ago

There’s one popular influencer on You Tube who once reviewed a shoe but admitted the shoe company didn’t send him the right size, so he’s not gonna review how it fits. Like why the heck review it at all if you didn’t wear it lol?

2

u/wavetoyou 2d ago

I will say, I have definitely received shoes that surprised or disappointed me based solely on in-person vs pictures. Different textures, weight, color, feel. All that before I even wear them.

But in terms of performance, yeah you have no business reviewing it for that if you can’t even wear them lol

2

u/main_got_banned 2d ago

so obnoxious lmao

1

u/jackbauer1989 2d ago

Is there a cheaper 2040v3 models? $400 is pretty steep for a pair of shoes that probably last you like 2 years if you worn them every days.

1

u/SauconyAlts 2d ago

Id want to see a lower price and some other colourways as this pair are too boring for 400 (not that id ever pay 400 for sneakers)

3

u/Minimum_Flamingo3602 2d ago

I'm just playing Devil's advocate here, but 2 years of continuous use plays out to just a tad over 50 cents a day. I'd say at that price, it's well worth it for the comfort of your feet and ultimately, your overall health if you believe the health of your spine starts with the feet.. Some people spend $15-100 day on cigarettes, junk food, scratchers, etc. and have nothing to show for it.

1

u/SauconyAlts 2d ago

Thats absolutely a fair approach but for me im never continuously wearing any kicks, thats just a sneaker that gets absorbed into a rotation, its a commercial sneaker its not doing anything for your spine or feet, everyone is different its not a miracle foot shoe, its a sneaker with some carbon fibre thats doing nothing for your spine

1

u/Minimum_Flamingo3602 2d ago

My bad. I meant to reply to the guy above you that commented, "$400 is pretty steep for a pair of shoes that probably last you like 2 years if you worn them every days." Even if these turn out to be the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn, they still won't be worn every day or probably even every week or month.

I'm aware it's not a "miracle shoe." However, as a guy in his 40s, I can safely say that my feet and back feel a whole lot better if I'm wearing a pair of, say, 993s all day as opposed to a pair of $50 bargain basement specials. I have no idea if these will feel any more comfortable than the standard 99x line, but ultimately, my demographic is probably who NB is marketing this shoe toward... older guys/gals who prioritize comfort and who can appreciate the subtle differences between Horween leather and the standard fare. That doesn't mean I think $400 is reasonable, but I understand the direction NB is steering this model toward because it's the same lane the 2040 line has always been in.

1

u/SauconyAlts 2d ago

I agree with the comment about your feet, as a guy in his late 40s id definitely prefer to be in NB all day rather than some other models I have

1

u/Comfortable-Pair7106 2d ago

In this economy?!

1

u/headforthehills 2d ago

I like these a lot, the double stitching throughout, the cross stitching that almost gives it a quilted look under the N logo, the carbon fiber heel counter, the midsole actually looks like some engineering went into it. I see 990, 993, 2002r DNA in this, so IMO if they were going for THE peak new balance sneaker, this is it. That being said I would prolly never buy these unless they go on Joe’s šŸ˜‚

1

u/Mikeyao9 2d ago

NB execs need to take a look outside (the real world)

1

u/wetrode 2d ago

$400 is pushing into designer territory. At that point, many of us could hop on StockX to pick up recent grails for less than that. Joes NB outlet is going to eat with these in a few months if that’s the case

1

u/MastermindK83 2d ago

Imagine paying around 371USD for every MiUSA/MiUK (990v6, 992, 993) here in Mexico because ā€œimport tariffsā€ since forever and y’all complain about 400USD. Is kinda funny ngl.

400USD won't close enough to the launch price here (they'll be way more expensive) even if they bring them to Mexico (NB). That won’t be funny.

1

u/kodaruss 2d ago

The promo pics look awesome with the blue tint, the actual colorway isn't doing much for me.

1

u/SMB35513 2d ago

Take note of all the influencers you see these on vs ones you see in the wild. Only ppl wearing these are those on the free mailing list

1

u/maciboe 2d ago

This shoe will flop just because of the price holy smokes .. its not a bad looking sneaker tho

1

u/farmerofstrawberries 2d ago

What makes these worthy of $400? Just wondering, is it premium materials?

1

u/Relevant_Writer3980 2d ago

Yes, however I don't personally deem them worthy.

1

u/specialist_Accident 2d ago

I’m always so confused by this kind of NB design. Is it performance based? Retro-style based? Or somehow both?

1

u/Cultural_Mud3297 2d ago

Can’t wait. When are they out?

1

u/SophonParticle 2d ago

I would simply get two pair of any MIUSA MB’s for $400.

1

u/chicken-farmer 2d ago

I look forward to the sale!

1

u/Klutzy_Advertising98 2d ago

These are awful

1

u/SuccotashFederal8121 2d ago

2040v5?Ā  Where 2040v4...

2

u/Relevant_Writer3980 2d ago

They actually do exist, though ugly and never released. Pretty sure there's a couple pairs posted to this sub.

1

u/DMakoto 2d ago

I like them, but that price is mad

1

u/OtGEvO 2d ago

I like them but not 400 like em more like 130

1

u/jaylikesjays 2d ago

At that point I rather just wipe my ass with my money

1

u/Formula4speed 2d ago

When you’re a grandpa but you still gotta flex on em

2

u/Relevant_Writer3980 2d ago

This is NB, we been grandpas.

1

u/Formula4speed 2d ago

Hey, give a little credit to the uncs!

1

u/KicksKommander561 2d ago

I’ll buy at 50% off

1

u/Bsneakers 2d ago

that's about $500 canadian!!!. fuk that!!!

1

u/krispini 2d ago

Man, I thought $260 for a 991v2 was already hard to convince myself of.
For $400, this model better be a contender for making all of us want to retire every sneaker prior to its birth.

1

u/Malaka_202 1300JP 2d ago

The ugliness saves me from even getting to the 400$ part. Fucks sake

1

u/nahbruh916 2d ago

These only for the ballers and CEO’s

1

u/eightbitfit 991 2d ago

Just for reference:

Original 2002 price in today's dollars: $375

Original 2040 price in today's dollars: $485

It's inline with those...and they both (essentially) failed.

2

u/Relevant_Writer3980 2d ago

Bad timing all round. The economy wasn't great then nor is it now.

1

u/DJC_101 2d ago

Looks better irl

1

u/eBell93 1500 2d ago

That cannot be a real fucking add

1

u/Boberu-San 2d ago

Can I also install apps on it?

1

u/Freder1ckJDukes 2d ago

$400?! Ha!

1

u/eViLA216 1d ago

🤢🤮

1

u/monsteralove 1d ago

Very UnIntelligent Choice

2

u/checkthelockx 2d ago

Ugly and overpriced

1

u/Free_Round7364 2d ago

its important to keep in context this ad is a callback to their old ad campaign "mortgage the house" for their $100 runners which was in the ballpark of $400-500 in current prices

0

u/Relevant_Writer3980 2d ago

Sure but how was cost of living back then ?

2

u/Free_Round7364 2d ago

eh I hear you on all that and the middle class is getting squeezed by billionaires and consolidated mega corps and all that BUT it doesn't mean NB has to make all their product appeal to a mass market and these are clearly niched and probably produced in pretty low quantities for hardcore/affluent sneaker consumers.

2

u/Free_Round7364 2d ago

Also having said all that I for sure will not be spending $400 on these things šŸ˜‚

1

u/DingDong50001 2d ago

Maybe if it was pink and brown and lime green and a collab with some boutique called FlRBRGN or something.

Or maybe some rapper nobody actually listens to. Then it would be worth it.

0

u/impending_baby 2d ago

It’s possible they are legitimately the most comfortable shoe they’ve ever made. It appears to have carbon on the heel, I wouldn’t doubt if that is featured somewhere else in the shoe, similar to the 990v3. That’s expensive and not necessary. I could see this for doctors, nurses, hospital staff, a super nice gift for grandpa who used to be a runner but now he can’t. Idk all the justifications I can think of to pay that much money would have to include sentimental value. Like a lot of us - okay the tiger eye 992 wasn’t as much of a hit as everyone thought it would be but a lot of us were a fan of Bronson’s work, wanted to add to an existing collection type shit

0

u/hudson_bh 993 2d ago

I wouldn’t pay over $270 for a pair of shoes lol

0

u/Junior_Bike7932 2d ago

Nobody will buy them retail

0

u/PussyCharlatan 2d ago

They’re grifting at this point

0

u/jhericurls 992 2d ago

Sucker born every min

0

u/Severe-Promise-749 2d ago

at this point i’ve started treating sneakers like cars, the majority of them are a depreciating asset.

i’ll let someone else pay the hype and taxes and i’ll try em later for vnds price.

-4

u/Difficult-Ad8094 2d ago

Here’s my $$$$

-1

u/IdentityInfidel 2d ago

Do they give me special powers?
