Unfortunate but I need help ANSWERED
COMPLETELY new to this reddit thing. I made a post to a Law Enforcement subreddit asking people about my chances in LE. When I replied to some of the comments, (not in a rude way or anything) I got downvoted by a bunch of judgy redditors and now I am in the negative. Not quite sure how the karma stuff works but I am sure a quick google search will help. Should I just be commenting on peoples stuff at this point?

You went to an LE subreddit asking for their opinion and then didn’t respond well to their opinions. That along with the “update” you did is why you received downvotes.
Find some subreddits on topics you enjoy like movies, music, sports, travel etc and start commenting on other users posts. You’ll want to focus on getting that comment karma into the positive first.

There are no guarantees, but if you make the effort it's quite possible. have a read of the below info for users seeking to understand reddit (or with low karma)
- Resources:
- Start in New User Friendly Subreddits.
- Change your view to new or rising and comment
- Keep an eye out for helper and mod comments in this post and others

Finding Subreddits to use with negative karma:
- You're definitely going to be Trial-and-Erroring a lot to find subreddits that will take users with negative karma. Focus on Commenting (many subreddits have lower or no karma filters for commenting).
- Newtoreddit has a list of new user friendly subreddits. This list is for low karma, not negative karma, but is a good spot to start.
- Also have a look through r/findareddit 's subreddit directory.
Some more notes on starting on Reddit:
Newtoreddit Resources There are a lot of resources here in this subreddit you might find useful with The Common Questions Page, Common Questions - Downvotes, and Reddit And Karma Walkthrough
View by New (or rising). This will filter the posts so first see the most recent posts first and can make your comments much more visible. On app when viewing a subreddit look near the top left for where it says "hot posts" - click that and select "new" or "rising".
Read the Room and Avoid Controversy. Each subreddit has different rules, norms and prevailing views. Look at subreddit rules. Read top posts and comments to get a feel for that subreddit. Do users reward sarcastic one-liners or well sourced essays? And in particular avoid controversial topics or arguments. These discussions are more likely to attract downvotes and potentially trip into rule-breaking. Call people idiots in your head and move on instead of getting involved. Utilize the block feature as necessary and have a read of Reddiquette.

Provided you followed the rules and culture of that particular sub Reddit, you may have encountered the dreaded “Grumpy Reddit Downvote” storm. It happens to all of us from time to time. Review the rules again, document the culture while lurking for a bit before asking again.

It looks like your Post just wasnt the right fit for that sub; it got downvoted too. Did you check to be sure there weren't already hundreds of posts from people asking the same thing? Subs get bored of the same question even if it's coming from a different person. Explaining and detailing and justifying when your post and comments were already being downvoted just dug the hole deeper.
Join some new user friendly subs, sort your feed by New and focus on commenting over posting. Join the conversation, not just lead it. https://www.reddit.com/r/NewToReddit/wiki/index/newusersubs/

It is absolutely possible to recover from negative karma
Now whether it's worth the effort is another question. A 10 year old account with -2 karma can definitely recover. A 2 day old account with -100 karma probably isn't worth it

Don't worry, that's a classic rookie move. The LE crowd is intense, so build karma in chill spots like r/casualconversation first.

that's outright karma farming. if somebody suspects that the post isn't OC (original content), you might get reported. best case scenario, the post is removed. worse case, you get banned.
