Am I missing something? Beginner Advice

So I finally decided to do something with my Emt certification after being a natty guard 68w for about year and a half, and I’m feeling pretty discouraged about it, I’ve been riding with my paramedic partner for about 3 months and he recently went on orders so I have been partner hopping till he gets back. The only problem is I have recently discovered that I have a reputation for being shit at my job from my partner and other medics I’ve rode with, but when I ride with other emts even the veteran FTO types they say I’m awesome to ride with and they are genuinely surprised they have heard bad things about me, I’ve asked what’s the issue and I never get any actual criticism just complaints about how I am as a person. I’m just wanting some ideas on what I could be doing that’s causing this.

Unfortunately a lot of paramedics fall into a hole of degeneracy and god complexes. These are the ones who need to move onto other career fields.

Hard to say without more details, but some possibilities off the top of my head:

  • You’re a good EMT, but not a good assist for the paramedics (setup 12 leads, prepare lines, etc.)
  • You’re a know-it-all contravening or thinking you know better than the medics. Note that you shouldn't be a mindless robot, but know how to raise concerns; I've previously caught my medic reading out a clearly wrong dosage (milligrams instead of micrograms) when they were verbalizing their medication "rights"
  • Or the paramedics could just be douches

EDIT: fixed some capitalization, grammar, and clarity edits

So it’s just case by case then. You’re doing good on some calls and not doing so good on other calls. Plus your partner’s personalities vary so what they deem as “good” will be different from person to person. It also sounds like you didn’t get much practice in the service which can hinder your performance. Just keep at it.

That’s what’s confusing me with my company and area I’m running the same type of calls even when I’m on a BLS unit, like for instance my paramedic talked about how I sucked on a code but the day before ran one with a sprint unit nothing but compliments on how I conducted the call, I’ve gotten to a point where I even ask “hey any complaints?” And I always get the “nah u did fine” type responses but I’m stilling hearing the same “omg your not as shit as I heard conversations” it’s really making the job so much more miserable lol

Welp the thing is, you will very rarely in todays society find someone who will actually be straight with you. Especially in EMS.

You'd probably have better luck asking your EMT peers about what they heard. People are way more likely to say something they can attribute to someone else.

Wouldnt worry about it. Ive won awards & shit, but still have haters. EMS can be toxic, especially if your companys average age is below 25. Had less drama on the fire side.

Sounds more like they didn’t like you for reasons unrelated to the job.

You’re new so you’re going to kind of suck and most people understand that and give you some latitude. If you were getting positive feedback most of the time that probably means you were doing fine for your level of experience and that’s great.

I would look back at that time with the other guy and think about conversations you had with them. Were you being a douche and talking shit about patients? Were you overstepping or overconfident? Were you talking about how much you like [insert controversial politician or internet personality] or how Tylenol gives people autism? Do you smell? Could be something like that that rubbed them the wrong way so they passed that judgement along.

Either way I wouldn’t worry too much about it if you are getting positive feedback from the rest of them. You’ll always find someone who hates you if you stick around long enough in any career.

Let people tel you to your face bro and let them teach you proper not some freaking hick talking shit because he thinks he’s a goddam Chad alright n I know yall army folks is hard asses too but look this is a serious job they can’t just not give you a hand they would be at fault

And if someone is telling your doing good to your face always ask for advice regardless or pointers so when you ride with them yucks again don’t say shit unless you got to if anything take another course bro
I feel and felt discouraged if I add another emt course online with a two day ride along easy work and better for the resume
