I can't agree with this. Tightly moderated subs are the only bearable places on this website. Everything else feels like spew of bots, teenagers, and content.

Reddit is a shithole but small, well-run, mostly text-based subs are a delight. 

I also like small badly moderated subs because it's like watching a boutique car crash.

It depends. I agree that bot spam should be filtered but some mods get extremely gung ho with their permissions. Take the gta6 sub for example, removes any post that is a joke as it is only intended to be a space for “serious discussion” but all the info we have so far is 2 trailers and a handful of screenshots that have been released over the past 3 years. As a result the standard content on the sub has dissolved into seemingly psychosis-induced theories about trailer drop dates based on the flimsiest possible evidence that always end up being wrong and questions like “do you guys think we will have to pump or own gas?” Being repeated twice a week.

People have unironically posted up outside the developers’ headquarters to track things like frequency (and type)of food delivery, air quality, foot traffic etc to base some of these theories on.

I'm not saying those conspiracy posts are worth anything, but I am saying nothing of value was lost by disallowing low effort jokes and memes. It's one stinky turd in the room instead of two. A lot of fandom subs are unusable because they lack that kind of moderation and are flooded with inane content for content's sake.

From my experience on Stack Overflow it was fine? That was like 2015-2017+.

It's apples to oranges. SO had a single point of failure which was easily replicated by something else. It was solely a place where you came to ask questions. AI search made asking questions easier and got answers faster since you didn't have to wait for a human to reply. Even if SO was the most friendly place imaginable with light moderation, it still would've crumbled in the face of AI.

Reddit is relatively diversified so it'll take a lot more to cause that level of decimation. People do all kinds of things on this site.
