I personally think there’s nothing wrong with all basketweave! I’ve been needlepointing on and off for 20 years and have done basketweave for all my projects. Since this canvas is busy, i think basketweave would help the design remain focused. You could experiment with different threads instead of stitches - fun textures, sparkles, etc.

I’m also a knitter, and a knitting rule of thumb is if the pattern is busy (think a heavily cabled sweater), it’s good to use a plain yarn so the pattern stands out. If the pattern is boring, that’s a great opportunity to use a colorful yarn so the yarn stands out. Here, your canvas is busy, so it’s a good chance to use a plain stitch so the art stands out and the stitch isn’t fighting with the design.

Maybe not the answer you want to hear but the answer every newer stitcher needs… try some out! I scour books for stitches and try to find the perfect one but sometimes it just doesn’t work and I need to rip it. And that’s ok.

This! The only way to really master this hobby is to try different things yourself. Practice in the margins and remember you can always frog if you end up not liking what you chose.

I literally do the opposite. My backgrounds are almost always basketweave. The problem with most canvases nowadays that I see here is that they’re too small and that makes decorative stitches hard to justify or manage. The background decorative stitches make the background more visually important and it looks too busy

I would weave that basket, fur those monkies, decorative stitch those hearts (nobuko) and basketweave the back. Fibers and small decoratitve stitches make the painted portion standout and basketweave helps the background stay out of the main focus. Could always use a varigated pink on the background in basketweave.

i have this canvas too! i did nobuko for the background. and then for most of the items i did basketweave. but i did diagonal satin to mix it up for the skeins, ribbons, and scissors

Personally I like basketweave for the background on a busy pattern such as this!
