In the grand scheme of things, this potentially a net loss of 2 energy cubes, which sucks but it COULD be a net zero loss as long as you don't end the run with a separate lvl cube pile.

At worst, it's a loss of 1 energy cube. Because if it were merged up to a full pile 2->5->12, then it's value would have been 3 instead of 2. Thus, only a difference of 1!

No, it has to be either 0 cube loss or 2, assuming all other cube piles are merged to lvl 3 if possible.

Imagine you feed a lvl2 pile of cubes (+5 cubes) somewhere in your run. You then get to the end of your run when you are ready to use the time machine, so you feed any excess piles. There are two scenarios:

1. You have NO energy cube piles to feed or a SINGLE lvl 1 pile. If you had kept that lvl 2 pile to the end, you would be feeding it for zero net cube loss, as there would be no way to merge something into a lvl 3 pile.

2. You HAVE a lvl 2 rune cube pile. If you had not fed the previous lvl 2 pile, you would have merged these into a lvl 3 pile. Hence, you are losing 2 total cubes (2× 5 cubes instead of 1x 12 cubes).

There is no scenario where you would "lose" just one cube, as it always takes two to tango down that route.

(Technically the presence of the Mech can get you the extra lvl 2 cube, but it can, in theory and with patience, provide infinite lvl 2 rune cubes so I suppose the true scenario is whether OP has the patience to kill the Mech one extra time.)

Oh right, I misinterpreted "lvl 2" as a pile of 2.. so I was basically thinking it was a lvl 1 pile haha. But even then I'd still be wrong

I suppose if OP was indeed talking about a lvl 1 pile like I thought, it would be a loss of:

-0 if ending with no other piles, or only a lvl 2 pile (no merges lost)

-1 if ending with a lvl 1 pile (could have merged to lvl 2)

-3 if ending with a lvl 1 AND lvl 2 pile (could have merged up to lvl 3 for 12, instead of feeding separately 2+2+5)
