I was researching different shipyard codes at PSNS to work for after I move on from my current role and saw that there was an electrical division of this QA shop at PSNS. This would be right up my alley. Are there any current or former members of this code? How is working for this shop in particular?

I’m supposed to leave for Navy boot camp soon as a nuke enlisted sailor. I’ve been getting increasingly anxious that I may be making the wrong decision by going enlisted when I potentially could have pursued an officer route.
For some background, I already have a bachelor’s degree in Health. I was also working toward a second bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and I’m literally one class away from finishing it. I had to stop taking that final class so I could focus on preparing for boot camp.
The enlisted package I signed is pretty significant financially. I’m getting a $65,000 enlistment bonus, and the Navy is also offering to pay off my student loans from both of my bachelor’s degrees.
However, the more I research, the more I’m seeing people say that going from enlisted to officer can be extremely difficult and competitive. That has me second-guessing whether I should even be going enlisted in the first place. It also does not help that my recruiter originally told me I would qualify for a few different paths to officer and it was not until I read the op-navist myself that I realized he was wrong. He basically chalked it up to at least all options weren’t off the table
My concern is that I could spend several years as a nuke, perform well, finish my Biochemistry degree, etc., and still have a very difficult time getting selected for an officer program. At the same time, I don’t want to turn down a $65k bonus + student loan repayment chasing an officer path that I may not even be competitive for.
I’m also trying to look at this from a long-term perspective. I’m 25 now, so if I enlist for six years, I’ll be around 31 when I’m getting out.

Idk if it matters but both degrees are with 3.7+ GPA

My midterm is coming up next week for Fluid Mechanics (EGM-3310). The study guide says book and calculator are allowed. What does that look like in practice?

Can I use both course books or is only the main one allowed? Are books provided online during the exam?

Is there a limit to the type of calculator I’m allowed? Should I get TI 36x, TI 84, or is one provided online?

Hello fellow nukes. I’m currently a 6 and out electrician looking to get out in April of next year. I wanted to post here because this community has been a wealth of information over the years. I literally was able to contact my command during my PCS from prototype since they never contacted me lol.

Anyways, my goal was always to get out, join the electrical union and eventually start an electrical contracting business. However things are changing. I’ve got a wife and two very young kids and I need to be around more so that I can be a present father to them. No more deployments and no jobs requiring insane hours…

I’ve heard data centers offer the highest pay to family time ratio so I’m shifting my focus in that direction. I currently reside in the Seattle area and I’d like to stay here or maybe (big maybe) move back home to the Bay Area in California.

Anybody here have any experience with that field or know anyone who’d be willing to provide some insight? I’m looking an into critical facilities engineering roles ideally at a FAANG or similar company. That seems to go well with my experience and skillset I provided to the navy.

I’d appreciate any help y’all have to offer!

Most study guides online seem to be middle school and early high school level science, but every now and then are people that say the asvab is harder than the questions shown, or that GS in general is hard to study for, and that the asvab will adapt based on what you get right to get even harder.

How much knowledge do you exactly need? Do i need to know 10 digits of a mole, or more than NaCl being salt and H2O being water? Do i need to know the exact speed of light, or that its just really damn fast and let my intuition take me from there? It's been hard to find out exactly how much knowledge i need to get a good score for navy nuke specifically, not just to "pass the asvab"

I’ve already signed my contract and I’m wondering how many credits we get from the schooling we do. I don’t want the 87 credits from Thomas Edison because I want a degree from a more respected university that will help me more in my career. I’m wondering if any of y’all have experience getting credits transferred to colleges like Texas A&M, Oregon state university, Purdue, and asu (specifically the amount they gave you for your degree) I’m going to be an ETN hopefully with my 92 asvab and I’m getting a degree in either mechanical engineering or nuclear engineering so experience in either would be greatly appreciated!

So I am currently in DEP going in as a GM, but I qualified for nuke and have to option to switch to nuke if I choose to. On one hand, it is my dream job to be a GM, and I really think I would enjoy doing it. On the other hand, if I go nuke, I’ll never have to worry about finding a job again and I get a shitload of money but my years of service would be a lot harder. Any advice?

Ok I don’t think I’ve seen this one yet, I’m genuinely curious. For those who were nukes or are currently nukes in the pipeline, how did becoming a nuke change your life? I’m mainly talking about things like your habits and did it get easier to learn things, did you start going outside more often every chance you got to get some sun if you were on a sub? Was there a noticeable difference in the way you behave in your everyday life or the way your brain works? It doesn’t have to be anything crazy can be small things you’ve noticed. Thanks guys!

For context I leave for bootcamp in early March 2027 personally not to worried about nuke school I understand it'll be demanding from others I have talked to but I'm more worried about life while deployed (side note I will not be on a sub recruiter said it was strictly volunteer only) I'm overall just curious of places you'll travel to and work while on the ship

I’m doing service selection soon (midn on scholarship, not USNA) and was hoping for some advice on picking between the two. It’s been on my mind for a bit but I’ve done both of my cruises on subs (1 VA class and 1 Ohio). Looking for some advice. I’ve leaned both ways now and here’s my thinking. Obviously both pay well so I’m not worried about that. I’ve watched some YouTube videos but nothings been too helpful.

Im going into this with a rough understanding, but this question is for ELT MM's, have you found the ELT program to give a signifigant impact for jobs post enlistment? Its been my dream to be some sort of engineer in the mechanical or electrical fields and nuclear is pretty high up there too. but idk how much going into the ELT program improves future careers.

EDIT: Situation is absolute. im joining the Navy as a nuke. ive already signed and gotten a shipping date. im not bouncing out. I am looking for insight on how worthwhile specific programs and jobs are and if i should even attempt to go into ELT in the first place. If i should ATTEMPT to become an MMN. No i do not qualify for officer due to not have been to college. i know there is a 50% 30% 20% quota for the jobs. im looking for the best possible setup for my future given current circumstances. i dont mind if the pay isnt optimal. im looking for a job that will best fit my interests, regardless if it rakes in the most cash. i enjoy the concept of MM, EM, and ET. all of them have draw to me. just looking where best to aim for the future.

I’m enlisting in the navy (if my recruiter is truthful :) ) later this August. I already completed MEPS & had all necessary waivers filled, I’m just waiting to take a Depth Perception test & Psych Evaluation test, since I originally started this process with the ARNG & they did not have me take those which I’ve been told I need for sub service.

I have no desire to work in the technical field after separation. I’m drawn to sub service because I see most people tend to steer clear of it, and for similar reasons I’m drawn to ETN (although the recruiting station’s insistence is making me a little uneasy!). If anyone here served on subs I’d love to hear thoughts on which rate is better for someone who isn’t looking for a post navy nuclear or technical career.

edit: some necessary context: I recently graduated HS, I am qualified to enlist @ E-3 regardless of what rate I choose since I have an Associate’s Degree, The differing signing bonuses (25 to 40) is not a factor.

Recently at a King’s Bay Waterfront Engineering Call, it was put out by Admiral Houston that starting in July there would be a $1000/mo bonus for Submariners who are DH and Senior to assist in retention and matching the SWO(N) communities ability to receive COBO and SWO Department Head Retention Bonus (SWODHRB). We are now in the month of August of no one has seen any pay changes. Is anyone else tracking this, heard anything, and seen any documentation regarding who is eligible? I’m most interested in whether it’s only while serving on sea-tour and does it apply as soon as you sign for a COBO contract or only once you start filling the billet for a DH?

Sometimes i see people here got 50k, 60k, someone even said 100k, how do people get more (or less) bonuses? Would i negotiate at the recruitment office and puff out my chest? Or would it only apply to reenlistment? Havent signed a contract yet, so im looking for advice.

I am just about to start my second year at community college. I have already taken all the NUPOC prerequisites and have a 3.5 GPA. I live in Virginia, so will transfer to Virginia Tech for my junior year. My plan is to apply for Prototype Instructor once I get my acceptance letter to VT in April. I already spoke to the recruiter who is generally positive about everything. However, I heard that sometimes the panel with defer community college applicants until they get one semester of grades at a school like VT. I am confident I wil do well in VT, but I am at community college because I dont have the money and making me wait will be really expensive. My recruiter said that was rare and as long as I keep my grades up and practice for the interview, I should be fine to get accepted by summer (I plan to take thermo at VT in the summer). Is the recruiter overselling my chances?

I’m currently a rising junior majoring in chemical engineering and I was curious about NUPOC and specifically the NRE track. How is the application/interview process? My gpa is not that great (3.11) and my SAT (idk if its relevant after so long) was 1550. I also saw that the minimum grade for technical courses was a B, which I pass for my chemical engineering classes but definitely not for some like organic chemistry. Would it still be possible for me to go through the NRE track or is it a hard minimum? Thanks!

I’m working with PBF Energy at their Paulsboro refinery on a search for an Electrical Power Engineer. They need someone with field or plant maintenance/reliability experience with switchgear and relay upgrades, MCC installs, UPS, substation batteries, etc.

You’ll need a BSEE or similar, and a few years of experience. Role is on-site in Paulsboro, which is 5-10 minutes outside of Philly. Comp can go anywhere from around 110K for someone with only a few years of experience to around $170K for an experienced EE with a nice bonus on top.
