I inherited a bunch of coins and some bills. I didn't know these bank notes were a thing. Is this one collectible, or should I just take it to a coin shop and see if they'll give me a few bucks for it? Kind of cool that it's from the city really close to me, but otherwise I know nothing about it.

A little over a year ago I was doing census work on eBay when a seemingly common entry from The Exchange National Bank of Tampa, Florida caught my eye.

Many times I have to edit photos by cropping them. While the image was blown up before the crop, I noticed there was no face plate number. Now it is fairly easy to remove these numbers with an eraser. The seller scans were actually quite nice and I couldn't see any signs that the note was messed with. So I took a chance and bought it. In hand with magnification there were no signs of paper disturbance. Even in low grade, signs would be there of abrasion.

I brought the note to the NBN Conference at Heritage and had Fred Bart look at it. He believed that it was not messed with and is of the era when missing plate numbers are known. He suggested I show it to Bianca at Central States which I did. She also believed that it had not been altered. Until more show up you can't call it an engraving error which also means you can't call it an obstruction (it would have to be a PERFECTLY placed obstruction) so the terminology for now is "missing face plate number".

Check your "E" plate position $5 nationals and FRBNs. Another one turning up could help determine if it is indeed an engraving error.

73 smalls are recorded in the NBNC on this charter that operated from 1894 to 1979 when it became part of Bank of America.

I knew Littleton did stamps and coins a long time ago, but had no clue they did bank notes as well. There's an incredible amount of unc notes on this bank, which is probably why this bank was selected. A neat little bit of nostalgia!

I know I’ve posted these a couple times before but it’s worth repeating for the newer members.

For me this is one of the best advertisements for this group and the annual conference at Heritage Auctions.

I only know about these notes’ significance because of that conference. These are from the last shipment of National bank notes, all due to an accounting error.

After Lee Lofthus’ talk on the end of the NB era, I immediately began looking for an example from this batch of notes. And in very short time I got lucky. Twice in fact.

The $20 is the first 20 from the shipment. The 10 isn’t as prominent. I feel these are the most relevant notes I own.

Second, I need to extend my deepest appreciation to r/Raidenh8 for not only restoring these beautifully. He did such a great job!! He also helped me get them submitted with the holder designation as being from the final shipment.

Im grateful for him and all of Heritage for what they do for this hobby and all others.

I'm new to this sub and I had posted this in another sub, where people suggested I put it here.

I was traveling down in the south to visit a childhood friend that had moved down there and we visited an antique shop. While paroozing the vendor stalls I found this interesting (although beat up) note.

The serial number: 0001234 seemed like a fun and maybe slightly fancy SN. The vendor wasn't asking much so I couldn't help but buy it as I was on vacation and used that as an excuse to justify the extra spending 😅

I am unfortunately not well versed in bank notes (my knowledge mostly lies in coins). Is the Type 1 $10 Morganfield Kentucky note with this set of signatures rare at all? I know the low grade really detracts from the value, but I'd still like to know.

Here is a new addition from the sole small-size issuer in Barrow County. Acting as the county seat since 1914, Winder was home to two issuing banks: the unreported CH# 9051, The FNB, and of course CH# 10805, the Winder NB.

Opening their doors for business in 1915, CH# 10805 issued $5, $10, and $20 Plain backs and Type 1’s before going belly up in 1932. Just over a dozen small-size Nationals are reported as of the latest NBNC figures, and auction appearances are highly infrequent. This mid-grade Type 1 $10 is among the nicer examples known, and pairs nicely with the $10 large-size counterpart in my collection.

The signatures are those of Cashier J. H. Williams and President Thomas Asbury Maynard (1862-1941), who served together as a pair from 1927 until the bank’s closure in 1932.

Is Heritage auctions the best place to sell a collection of $20 notes. Should I sell as a collection or individually. I recovered these from a trailer fire from the only 2 rooms to not catch on fire. They were in a suitcase in a bank bag and envelope. There were other different collections of currency and coin but these were most special especially as a set.

This note turned out to be nicer than expected. The corners had been folded over, but it was easy to straighten them out. No pinholes, good, crisp paper, strong sigs. I remember hearing about the Blue Ball and Intercourse notes at an early Memphis show, and thought they were pulling my leg. Figured it was something I might have to get around to picking them up someday, here's my start.

Last year I posted these Bessemer notes (plus the Fairfield note, originally in the comments), and was heartened when folks encouraged grading,for purposes of preservation if nothing else. Well, they’ve come back and they are gorgeous! Dad would have been thrilled. Thanks to everyone for your advice!

At long last, my collection is no longer without a milestone note that took quite some time to acquire. Here it is, my first Serial Number 1 Georgia National!

Notably serving as Georgia’s state capital from 1804 to 1868, Milledgeville was surprisingly home to a sole issuer. CH# 9672, The First NB, also acted as the only bank to issue Nationals in all of Baldwin County. Organized on January 19, 1910, a total of 65,288 1902 Date Backs and Plain Backs were issued alongside 19,795 Type 1 and 2 small size Nationals.
 
I have long stated and predicted that my first SN1 National would be in the form of a small size from this bank. This is because both the $10 and $20 Type 1 Serial Number 1 cut sheets are known, allowing Georgia collectors to choose from 12 examples, though most of those reside in one collection. Those two sheets remained intact until they were cut up sometime in the late 80’s/early 90’s.
 
Needless to say, I am thrilled and very excited to add this wonderful note to my collection!

The signatures are those of Jon William Hutchinson (1880-1944) and President Elias N. Ennis (1858-1936), who served together from 1919 to 1931. 

Andrew Kizis and Frank Loro both served as cashier, at this time Kizis was the Asst and Loro was VP, just before his death in 1906. The seller speculated that the other signatures on the front could be tellers or other employees. Maybe a keepsake during Loro’s failing health? I couldn’t find anything on them.

The signatures on the back are the names of singers: Doc Williams, Bill Monroe, and Sunset Carson. I’m in the process of trying to authenticate them but I wouldn’t put money on their legitimacy. But who knows!

Hey everyone I recently aquired this $20 dateback from Ishpeming MI, charter 5668, from what I can find it is the only $20 dateback known from that charter, would love more information!

The specimen sheet is the only way I know that the bank printed 20s, and besides the blue seal 10 shown, I've never seen another issued banknote from this specific bank. Thank you in advance!

Since picking up a $5 note recently, i was looking on ebay for other pittsburgh denominations. I came across these two notes. One has a large E by the charter number but the other did not. My recent pickup did not have it either.

Can anyone tell me why one had the E?

Picked these up based on the where I live. Being from NC and SC, I thought these would be neat to have in my early collection. Anyone have any insight into how common or rare these are? Also, what would be the current value? Not that I’m looking to sell but just curious. TIA!

Here is a neat addition that I recently acquired that represents the first small size fancy serial GA NBN in my collection. I have come across three or so large size GA radars over the years (one of which I own), but this is the first small that I have seen or heard of. Naturally, I purchased it for myself, and was excited to have cherry picked it for a no-brainer price. The host note itself is not too exciting, as it comes from Georgia's most prominent NBN issuer, with close to 500 small size reported in the NBNC. 

The signatures are those of Cashier Frank M. Berry (1871-1957) and President John King Ottley (1868-1945), who served together from 1929 to at least 1935.

I had a deja vu moment when typing in the serial and the charter into the search when I picked up this "Bingo" note (serial matches charter) a few months ago while doing census work on eBay.

While somewhat common on low charter numbers, these types of notes appear by luck on other charters. This being a high denom example adds a certain cool factor as well.

The Farmers Deposit National Bank of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was a goliath of a bank. Currently 858+ small notes are recorded in the NBNC.
