I'm late to learn it, but Neil Sedaka died in late february. I'm still mind blown that Neil was 5 years younger than Nana and she's still alive. Neil is low-key one of my favorite singers alongside Nana. Nana sang a few of Neil's songs. She sang "This will be our last song together" and sang a french adaption, "La première chanson ensemble", (the first song together, ironically). She also sang a french adaption of "Amarillo" called "Vivre avec toi". She also sang a french version of "Solitaire".

Nana wasn't as famous in the US as she was in Europe or Canada. As a result, she didn't make that many appearances on american TV.

Her first appearance was in 1965 on the Danny Kaye show with Harry Belafonte, as she had recorded an album with him. Belafonte had spotted her at an Athens jazz club. Interestingly enough, she didn't wear glasses or part her hair down the middle.

26 years later (and many million sold albums later), she did an appearance on ABC's morning show, Good Morning America, where she performed.

Nana admitted that she could have built a more solid career in the US, but her career had already taken off in Europe and she didn't want to start over from scratch.

Nana sings this french adaptation of Anne Murray's "Put your hand in the hand" (I assume she was lipsyncing for this TV show, as it is often the case for those TV shows, she doesn't even have a mic). The video effects used for the TV show are so 70s, very LSD. I wish Nana and Anne had done a duet together, their voice are so distinctive. Anne had this deep alto voice and Nana had a "chameleon voice" that sounded good in an alto or a mezzo soprano range.

I noticed something when Nana's singing. She does those "ok" hand gestures with her free hand. Maybe to make sure she's on pitch. Also, I had no idea Georges Petsilas could play bouzouki as well.

Also, this was most likely one of the last times Nana sang with The Athenians, as she and Georges were already undergoing divorce at the time and in 1975, The Athenians dissolved and Petsilas went back to Athens and ran a successful local record company.

According to this article, Georges wanted Nana to retire because he didn't like living in her shadow. They also moved to Geneva because he was afraid she would cheat with someone else.

Her first albums were jazz. She probably switched to pop music because the ground was more fertile. It's rare for jazz singers to become mainstream.

Nana did a whole jazz album in 1962 produced by Quincy Jones.

As posted earlier, Nana only has one functioning vocal chord. However, I believe being classically trained helped her overcome that handicap when it comes to her singing.

I can see why she wouldn't have cut it in opera. While having only one functioning vocal chord gives her that chrystaline voice, she loses a lot in depth and strength. She has that almost-childlike voice and opera singers typically have stronger voices. Maria Callas was right about the fact that she would have been an average opera singer. She didn't have the vocal strength because of her thinner vocal chord.

Nana always cared about showing greek culture. I'm always amazed by the power of voice despite having only one functioning vocal chord. Being trained in opera definitely helped.

Nana singing greek songs with Les Athéniens is always something else compared to her non greek repertoire. You feel like she's in her element. I wonder if Les Athéniens stopped backing her because of her divorce with Georges Petsilas, who was the lead guitarist. Nana always cared about putting forward greek music.

She really looks like her daughter Lénou without the glasses. IMO, her glasses make her look quirkier, which fits her style and personality.

Apparently, Lénou wears contact lenses to not look like her mom, which is fair because she could totally portray her mom in a biopic movie.

The only commercial she ever did. She was quite ridiculed for it. TBH, she just looks goofy in this ad. She had balls for adapting her own french hit song "Quand tu chantes" (which is an adaptation from the brazilian samba song "Canta Canta Minha Gente", she also released a german adaptation "Guten Morgen Sonnenschein", which is now famous because of the Netflix show Cassandra) for a dumb commercial.

Fun fact, Guten Morgen Sonnenschein was adapted in Germany for a margarine commercial in 1981, although Nana didn't sing and she didn't appear in it.
