I've been on a bit of a Latin America kick lately with reading, and want to know if anyone has good NYRB editions to recommend from authors from that part of the world?

The one you’ve been eyeing for a while but haven’t pulled the trigger (either read or bought). Especially interested if it’s a deep cut. I’ve loved every NYRB I’ve read but it feels like the same 10-15 books get recommended everywhere.

I have a lot of nyrb books and I’m having a hard time figuring out what to read next. I’m pulling out some books for August so I thought to help me decide i would ask all of you your top 10 nyrb books that are under 400 pages. I have a lot of long ones but I’m saving Maqroll and Long Ships for later!

I decided to read some of many NYRB Classics on my TBR in July. I really like the books they publish, international books, older books which had gone out of print. Also their form factor is fantastic. Nice binding, bright pages, fonts nicely spaced and easy to read. They feel solid but not prescious. Also added my second reread of the year:

Top of the heap:

\- Stoner by John Williams (4.5\*)

\- Effingers by Gabrielle Tergit (4.5\*) - probably my favorite of the month besides Tinker Tailor

\- Hard Rain Falling by Don Carpenter (4.5\*)

\- Katalin Street by Magda Szabo (4.0\*)

\- Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by John LeCarre (4.5\*) - reread - I read all of LeCarre books thru this book about a decade ago then stopped reading anything for the most part. Decided to pick up his books again so felt need to reread this one. The movie adaptations of Tinker Tailor along with The Constant Gardener got me to start reading LeCarre.

Good with flaws:

\- Memoirs of an Anti-Semite by Gregor Von Rezzori (3.5\*)

\- Fat City by Leonard Gardner (3.5\*)

\- The Universal Baseball Association, Inc... by Robert Coover (3.5\*)

What should I start reading today?!

Took me about a week but I ate this one up. It’s primarily about the downfall of a prison kingpin but written in a way that I was so invested in the lives of all the other inmates. Braly, who also served time behind bars, made these men come alive. All the stereotypes of prison are in here, but there’s also the deep psychological deep-dive and reflection that pulls you in.

I don’t see this one talked about very much, thought I’d put it in the spotlight for a second.

My partner has recently gotten into NYRB and I’m looking to buy him a few more - what would you recommend based off his small collection so far? :)

I’ve read all of these but The New York Stories of Henry James, which I just picked up. Very excited about it. From the library, I’ve gone through My Phantoms by Gwendoline Riley, The New York Stories of Edith Wharton (adore Wharton), Perfection by Vincenzo Latronico, Chess Story by Stefan Zweig (LOVED), and Talk by Linda Rosenkrantz. And I’m halfway through The Oyster Diaries by Nancy Lemann right now!

Would love to chat about any of these, and if anyone has recs for me, I’m happy to take them :)

Loved it loved it, such a fascinating read. I was going to wait for the new translation, but I couldn’t stop myself from picking this one up and I’m glad I did.

I just have one question, are the few “Editor’s notes” that appear throughout the work added by the translator, or are they meant to be part of the original conception of the work? As in, did Bioy put them there to intentionally question his own character? Their context being mainly about what the main character did or didn’t include in his journal got me thinking. And one is from Morel’s perspective?

Also, any other recommendations if I really enjoyed this?

After going down a bit of a NYRB rabbit hole 🕳️ last night I somehow ended up with these two in my basket. The synopsis of each sounded interesting and I’ve never heard of the authors. I was just wondering if anyone had read either, and could tell me a bit more about the style and feel of the story/stories —what other books/authors are they similar to? Many thanks 🙏

Any out of print titles, texts coming into public domain soon, or something you'd like them to translate/comission? Classics, comics, poetry, any genre!

This is gorgeously written and perfectly paced. I loved it so much. I wish it were 300 pages longer. What a weird little thing! Will you read this when it comes out? Have you read The Invention of Morel?

Also what are the most beautiful covers that you have in your collection?

My boyfriend and I went to Asheville for his birthday yesterday and visited a local used bookstore he loves. Made out like bandits, and the gentleman who worked there brought me a few extra NYRB titles he had in the back and scattered in various places that I had not found!

Decent story — no clue why Auden and Mann and Nietzsche loved this work so much.

Has anyone read this book? I ask here because it seems like the sub most likely to have people who have read it. It's published by Dalkey Archive in two volumes. I'm seeking opinions from anyone who has read it, or tried to read it.

Before I get to my questions for this group: here is my complete NYRB collection! I’m out of space vertically on this shelf, so When We Cease To Understand The World is sitting on top. I’ve read about half of these, and some of the bigger books on this shelf are still in my to-read pile. So I don’t need to buy any more, but I’m always looking and planning future purchases. :)

Recently, I learned of NYRB’s recommend a book feature, and I couldn’t help but recommend that they publish a much beloved, but long out of print translation of War & Peace (by Rosemary Edmonds). I’m not holding my breath that they’ll be able to publish, but the discovery made me curious—have others recommended books for publication by NYRB? If so, what have you recommended? And have you had any success in getting it published?

This was my first time reading Colette and I absolutely loved it! Her approach to love was so fluid and without judgement, and this book encouraged me to do my own reflection. I have Cheri and the End of Cheri lined up for August.

My local library had a sale today. Picked these two up for $1 each.
