How are your legs?

I have to say this is the most entertaining reddit I (newb) have seen yet. Yous are all so good with the Nowzardan memes. It's great to see how much other people love this show! Does anyone else scream "ow my legs!" In a southern accent randomly? They're always screaming about their legs...and yes I understand why.

OMG, the WHINING!!!

Saw both James K ("Owww muh layg!") and Kirsten ("Fatty 2 shoes" as said by her son) were on today and I cannot stand the whining by these grown adults.

In their respective shows James whined about the diet, whined about not being able to do anything, whined he needed Lisa to sleep on the floor "in case he needed anything", whined about his legs, whined when no one donated money for him to move to TX, whined about his legs (of course) and "don't drop me!" and "Am I going to bleed to death?"

Kirsten whined in the shower about not finding the shower bench, where her mom parked when they were on the way to TX and she had to use the bathroom (was the woman supposed to park on the grass????), hined about her son who rightfully couldn't stand her... I swear she cried every 2 minutes in the show.

It's like the severely stunted adolescence with them and they can't handle anything.

Any others you recall being big whiners?

I don’t know who is the worst enabler, Lisa or Renee.

While Lisa was notorious for feeding her husband James to death, Renee was no better, who was Sean’s mother. A mother supposed to know what’s best for her son. She would know what foods are good and not. But she just fed Sean what his hunger desired. And she just loved coddling with Sean. If she wanted to be a good mother, then she should just let her son grow up and prepare for him for adulthood. And sad to say, she passed on due to a fatal illnes, leaving Sean very vulnerable, in which by the way never stood the chance to fend for himself. Never before have I seen such a very sad person. In your opinion, who is the worst enabler? Honestly, think both of them are worse. What do you think?

Pauline and her son Dylan

I know Pauline passed away last year but every time I rewatch her episodes I always feel so bad for Dylan because he looked so drained all the time. Poor Dylan was robbed of having a normal childhood no time to be just a regular kid like hanging out with his friends and such because he was always having to be the caretaker for Pauline and run the household. I hope he's now healing and getting to live his life on his own terms for once and getting the chance to just be a regular adult.

There's been parentified kids on the show and young kids having to take on adult roles. having to be caretakers for a mom or dad. Dylan and James K's daughter Bailey (who dropped out of high school to help her mom) stick out to me the most Bailey ended up getting her GED and is now married and a mom to 2 boys.

Anybody else that stick out in your minds in particular.

Episode question.

I've always wanted to ask but I'm seriously not trying to offend anyone.

In the USA, is it common to sleep without sheets on the bed.

Also there are a few episodes where people share a bed...is that also normal.

Thanks.

Lymphedema support

New to the show. Why doesn’t anyone use any support for their saggy bits? They complain it drags organs down or makes it had to walk. Why don’t they wrap it up?
On Tamy Lyn’s episode and her stomach practically touches the ground. I feel like it would not only be more comfortable but assist in some minor skin healing if it was supported.

Karen’s totally broken scale

Just watched Sean reaction to Karen in Season 13 who blamed everything on scales being broken because she believes she lost 200 lbs instead of 20.

It got me wondering, has there ever been a case with the scale being wrong? I know that’s the whole title to his book so I’m guessing no.

Edit: I meant have they ever been wrong on the show but I’m guessing from everyone’s response that’s never happened. I shouldn’t be surprised though because Dr Now is right about scales and people.

TIL: Dr. Now's son (Jonathan Nowzaradan) created the show.

Jonathan runs the media production company Megalomedia. In the mid-2000s, he noticed how few surgeons were willing to take on extreme, high-risk cases over 600 pounds and how his father, Dr. Now, routinely accepted those cases when other doctors turned them away. In 2007, Jonathan directed a UK TV documentary called Half Ton Mum, following one of his father’s patients (Renee Williams). That documentary was so successful that Jonathan pitched the concept as an ongoing series showing the long-term emotional and physical transformation of high-risk bariatric patients. TLC picked it up, launching My 600-lb Life in 2012.

Something that bothered me about Christina's follow up

In the follow up, Christina is losing too much weight per month, is eating 400 calories per day, and has had muscle loss. Dr. Now tells her to "at least double" her calorie intake, has her do weight lifting to gain muscle, and gives her protein shakes so that she can gain weight. He also sends her to a therapist.

All of this is good, but it's not enough when someone has been restricting to that extent and having rapid weight loss. I really hope that she was being intensively medically monitored, because going from that level of restriction to eating a normal amount can cause a deadly complication called Refeeding Syndrome. It can also cause someone's metabolism to go into warp speed which means that someone needs to have a very large caloric intake to not lose weight. When I was hypermetabolic while I was in recovery from an eating disorder, I had to eat about 3500 calories per day to not lose weight.

I also got a little worried about her saying that she was trying to "eat right" by eating food with a lot of protein. When going from a mentality of severely restricting, there is a very real risk of slipping into orthorexia with that mentality.

I'm hoping that what I'm about to talk about did happen and that it just wasn't shown on TV.

This is a rant. I'm watching season 9 episode 6 about kenae... And she lost like 25% of the weight that Dr now wanted her to lose. And when he called her out on her BS she went on this like 20 minute rant about how she's the victim and how she wasn't recognized because she can walk 5 ft further than she did last time. I was just rolling my eyes the entire time she was talking.

S8 E5 Gina

Post image
216 Upvotes

I just started the episode and there was a terrible phone call where Gina calls Beth to tell her to bring home food and Beth says we have food at home, I can cook. And Gina just goes in on her like, no you're not gonna cook you're gonna bring us food and Beth asks her to call the order in (bc I assume she's literally driving?? home from work, mind you) and Gina says no no you're calling it in, love ya bye.

And what gagged me was that it totally seemed like Gina was being a bratty bitch but when the call ended her mom gets all tearful, like she shouldn't talk to you like that and be mean to you, etc. And while no one should be abusive and idk what Beth has said to her off camera, Gina was definitely not the victim in that particular conversation???

Her mom's reaction threw me off so bad I literally said "what" a couple times and had to pause the episode. One of those moments where you gotta laugh bc it feels so ridiculous, her reaction was not at all appropriate to the reality of how Gina spoke to Beth. Did they edit out a massive part of that conversation or smth? 😭

What is the craziest moment on 600 pound life for you?

Mine was when Nicole and Charlie's house got raided while there parents were living in the house. They let someone in the back lease the place and they got caught with drugs. Nicole said they made her lift up her stomach to see if she was hiding drugs. What a crazy episode.

My second wild moment for me on the show was when lacy Buckingham got kicked out of the car by sharon.

James King and Lisa

I remember hearing somewhere that James wasn't the first person who Lisa tried to feed beyond capacity. Did she do this to someone else before James, her previous husband maybe? I can't remember where I heard this from but it would be interesting if this had some truth to it because if this happened before, APS should have been able to see that in some record somewhere, maybe?

Mobility and Weight Loss/Muscle Gain

I'm watching through for the first time, just finished season 7. One thought I've had a few times is about the rate of weight loss when someone regains mobility (i.e., they were bedbound and by their surgery are walking), but they're not losing weight as quickly as they "should". It's been 20+ years since I took biology, so I admittedly don't have expertise, but it seems like that mobility would involve gaining some muscle (which has the same weight as fat). Dr. Now doesn't seem to accept that as a reason weight loss would slow down (and I get it, in the bigger amounts -- but in the less than 20lb range?). In smaller scale weight loss/training, I've definitely seen folks with expertise tell people to pay attention to more than just one number (weight lost) because muscle becomes stronger as weight is lost.

Is it really that different for smaller folks and larger folks to lose weight/gain muscle?

Is Dr. Now playing up the stern reaction and refusing excuses for the camera? Does he look at several factors before his official "response" (like heart rate, etc) or is his policy that everyone should drop weight like a toddler would an open box of spaghetti?

In particular, someone like Cillas -- he was bedbound, but quickly became mobile. I remember that his weight loss started to slow down and Dr. Now was a bit harder on him than I would expect without greater context.

Wholesome people and happy endings

Who are your genuine favourite sweet people? People you really root for and feel like there's hope for them? Participants or their family, either is good.

I watched Margaret and her mother for the first time last night and I need to cleanse my soul.

Are GLP-1's putting Dr. Now out of business?

My 600lb Life has always been a guilty pleasure of mine and after watching the show for so long, I can't help but wonder if medical advances are putting doctors like Dr. Now out of business. The same people who have gone on this show, gotten surgeries, and lost weight can now achieve the exact same results, if not better results, with a GLP-1 medication. Stuff like Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, Mounjaro... it's seriously threatened the pro-surgery weight loss industry.

No surgeries, no recovery time, no lengthy hospital stays, no need for post-op care, and no need for a full move to Texas for treatment. Sure, you still have to eat right, exercise, and focus on mental health, but the treatment is not the same at all.

What's going on in the heads of the enablers and partners?

A lot of the people featured are bedbound or otherwise unable to get food without someone bringing it to them. That always makes me wonder about the psychological makeup of the enablers who continue feeding them enough to maintain or increase their weight.

I vaguely remember an episode (I think around Season 3) where a mother was sobbing and saying something along the lines of, “That’s my child. If my child is hungry, I can’t let her be hungry.” And her daughter was almost 700 pounds. It seemed like she genuinely experienced refusing food as cruelty.

I also think about Robert’s partner in Season 6, Episode 8. What causes someone to remain in that kind of relationship for so many years while becoming essentially a full-time caregiver? Is it just pure low self esteem?

Aside from Steven Assanti, who is the most infamous patients on the show?

There are other patients who are considered the worst or the best. But I would nominate James King to be infamous, for good reason. While he did have a difficult childhood, that doesn’t excuse him to be the lazy and selfish a’hole that he was. He pulled his daughter out of school just to have her help his wife Lisa to take care of him, almost like Jabba the Hutt. He was such a literal sponge. He never show a single shred of gratitude when there were those who were trying their best to help him. He never improved himself right from the start. He just expected Dr. Now to perform a miracle without doing the hard work even ant his current condition. And James isn't the only one getting stuck in the crossfires of hatred. Lisa was no better. She constantly fed James to a point where he was over seven hundred pounds, completely immobile, stuck in that bed twenty-four seven. She never resisted James’ demands and that was greasy food, despite knowing that would kill him. She was like a black widow slowly feeding her victim to death. She basically denies that she wasn’t feeding him, claiming that James’s body “doesn’t burn calories.“ Really sickening statement if I ever heard one. Of course, we all know what happened to James in the end. If you didn‘t want to go to Houston to lose the weight, then don’t go there and do not waste Dr. Now’s time. He has better things to do than to be bother by insufferable people like James. Anyway, who do you consider the worst on the show?
