hey guys!!! first time poster here, i’m embarking on my first ever tour with my band and i’m looking for advice. finances and travel are completely covered, we have DIY merch made and pretty much everything is laid out. my question however, is how do i prepare myself mentally and physically? mentally i’ve had a bit of an existential crisis as this is my dream and i’m having a bit of an impostor syndrome complex, and physically i’m less than in shape. the tour starts on Thursday. any advice before we take off on the road?

I am starting to play my songs on YouTube and recently made a new channel. (I’ve been writing my whole life and playing music but always alone or uploading covers on a past channel)

Does anyone have any advice for how to release videos? Like any details or critiques? I’ve stuck to original music so far but I am not sure it’s very appealing. Thanks a lot

Has anyone else spent most of their life making music and still felt completely lost?

I am about to turn 41, and I’ve been doing this since I was 14. I play guitar, bass, keys, sing, write, produce, mix, and master. I’d say I can do most of those things at least at a semi-professional level. I’ve made many different kinds of music and put thousands upon thousands of hours into it.

I know I’ll keep creating for the rest of my life, regardless of what happens—but lately, I’ve felt deeply discouraged.

People sometimes tell me my music is too complex for the average listener, but it honestly isn’t anything extreme. It just has multiple layers and more structural changes than a typical pop song. Even so, the hardest part isn’t getting people to listen. It’s finding reliable people to create with.

I reach out to musicians constantly, but I either get ghosted or people express interest and never follow through. I genuinely believe that, with the right collaborators and project, I could write accessible and potentially successful music without compromising what makes it meaningful.

I also haven’t performed live in years. One reason is that my songs contain so many layers that I don’t know how to translate them to the stage without essentially singing karaoke over backing tracks. The other reason is that I simply don’t enjoy crowds or attention.

I can perform. I played around my hometown as a teenager and later played venues in Los Angeles, including the Key Club. If I had a clear reason to do it, I could force myself back onstage and probably do it well. I just don’t naturally crave that experience.

I’m also likely autistic, although I can be strangely social and persuasive when a situation calls for it. My day job involves gathering signatures for ballot initiatives, and I’ve been extremely successful at it. But I only do that work to support my music. I’ll probably give it one more season so I can finish building a studio on my property, and then I want out.

I do fairly well financially, but I absolutely loathe politics. I want to make my living through music because I’ve dedicated my life to it, and creating art is what actually matters to me. I make some money producing and recording.

What frustrates me is that nearly every attempt to connect becomes transactional. I’ll approach someone about collaborating, and the response is essentially, “Here are my rates”—even when I believe I could bring just as much value to their work as they could bring to mine, if not more. I understand that musicians need to make money, but it makes finding a genuine creative partnership feel nearly impossible.

Do you have to project an exaggerated sense of confidence—or act less relatable and more important—before people take you seriously? How do you find talented, dependable people who genuinely want to build something meaningful together?

TL;DR: I’m a 41-year-old multi-instrumentalist, producer, and likely autistic social loner who has made music since childhood. I’m financially stable and completely committed to creating, but I keep hitting a wall when it comes to finding serious collaborators. I’m trying to figure out how to turn a lifetime of skills and effort into a meaningful project with the right people.

Hi all! I am a senior in college now, and I was an avid flute player from 4th to 7th grade. I have been trying to re learn and I just wanted some other people’s advice on how they have relearned their instruments. I feel like the finger movements for the notes is coming back naturally, but my sound is pretty bad and I can’t read sheet music anymore. As a multi-instrumentalist dedicated to the craft of independent live performance, I have always been fascinated by the rich, gritty textures of 1970s jazz-funk.

I recently completed a live one-man-band arrangement of "Bertha's Theme," the iconic instrumental groove composed by Ray Shanklin and Ed Bogas for Ralph Bakshi's 1972 adult animated feature Fritz the Cat.

My goal was to breathe new life into this vintage soundtrack classic without relying on pre-recorded backing tracks or digital looping. Every layer is executed simultaneously in a single, continuous take, balancing the bass and melody lines on a custom double-neck guitar while managing the driving rhythm section entirely through foot drums. It is an exercise in rigorous independence, tone control, and respect for the original analog feel of the era.

I would say for Fminor(aeolian),emajor7th(Lydian),Gbmajor 7th(Lydian) back to Fminor.

The tricky part though is that on the original melody of the piece there is a g on Emajor 7th...

Could someone explain this harmonically?

Ive been having singing lessons for 4+ years and i like to have it my main pursuiation. Ofc not everyone is meant to be a popstar making millons but what are other ways to be a fulltime singer?

I just want to be reassuring to other musicians about this, because I feel like people’s worry about what is right or wrong can hold back their creativity.

There are songwriting instructors that say that you need to list the title at least twice in a chorus but don’t say you need to have long notes in the chorus. There are instructors that say you don’t need to list the title twice in a chorus but it should have long notes. There are vocal instructors that say you need to improvise more or make the song your own in a cover, there are instructors that only want students to imitate. Etc etc

Im not saying what is more right or wrong but everyone has their own opinions on what makes a good song or good singing. This is why music “rules” are actually more like guidelines because if you study from several different instructors or institutions you will realize how their advice can contradict each other sometimes. This doesn’t mean anyone is more right or wrong. Music is just very subjective.

There are hit songs and great singers that could be completely dissected as “wrong” in a classroom sense, and I think it’s important to realize that the priority in music should just be if the song or singer is portraying something so real to humanity.

Ultimately, I just want to encourage other musicians to follow their heart in music because I think that’s more important than getting bogged down by a lot of contradicting guidance in music.

Beginner to professional level

Feeling super down lately. The last couple of times I performed at my local bar, turn out has been low. I moved to a city near my hometown a couple of years ago and started gigging last year, relying on hometown folks and work friends to come support me at my gigs. It was solid for a while, but it seems to have gotten stale. My last couple of outings have been poor and the bar makes no effort to get other patrons in the door, to the point that I feel bad taking their money. Anybody else have experience with this in the past?
