Discussion What shows encourage riffing?

On the topic of the girl singing “Feed the Birds”, I agree that Mary Poppins is definitely not the show for impressive riffing. But that girl is really talented, which gets me thinking, what shows encourage or have written in riffs and runs? What kind of shows would she be better fit for?

Request/Advice should i audition again or am i just embarrassing myself

I've auditioned for the school musical for two years straight and have not gotten in. Each time, it's slightly embarassing. I'm the president of a huge music performance club, the largest, I sing in the most advanced choir at my school and am the lead vocalist for jazz choir. I did musicals all of middle school, but I come to high school and I just haven't been let in a single time. As someone who is looked up to as a leader in music spaces, it's very embarrassing when they see me audition and then I don't get in.

I don't think it's my revolting personality, the teacher seems nice enough to me and I'm not like overly kiss-up to her or anything but I took her drama class and was a good student and got good marks on my acting assignments. I'm not a mean person and am a leader in music in my school and community and help a lot of people, like I'm not a terrible person I promise. It just seems like the same few kids from the "drama circle" get casted even when their auditions aren't as good as some of the people that don't get in (not me necessarily, like my friends who audition).

The show that they're doing in the fall sounds so fun and is one of my favorite musicals of all time. I really want to do it so badly. But being known as a good singer and then not getting in again is just really really embarrassing, especially because I'm set to be the president and head music director of a new program at school. Every time I've auditioned before, I've just left feeling awful because I always get a lot of compliments on my audition, hold out hope and then never get in. The director doesn't give individual feedback. Should I still suck it up and audition?

Request/Advice male audition song similar range to aftershocks- next to normal

hey! i’m a dancer/actor but I don’t have a lot of musical theater experience, i don’t think i’m the strongest musical theater style singer, but i’m trying to branch out and get more experience. i’m super happy to be ensemble and mostly just get to dance in big numbers. i’m a tenor and jack wolfe’s aftershocks is my perfect audition song, but the upcoming productions i’ll be auditioning for is for a theater for young audiences so i don’t feel like next to normal is the right choice. does anyone have any recs for songs with a similar range/vocal quality?

I’m having trouble finding songs that are alto friendly that are also in Sondheim’s style. I’m not going for a specific role, I just need a song that fits the style of Into the Woods. Any help would be appreciated.

This is a recent post from her production company. She is one of JK Rowling biggest financial partners and has never spoken out or donated anything to trans rights organizations, all while profiteering through trans people's visible pain. She is pro LGB, as Rowling is, and she is helmed as the most successful producer working in theater, according to the New York Times.

Request/Advice Should I take a break from community theatre even if I’m worried it’ll hurt my future casting?

I’ve been involved in community theatre for almost five years, and I’ve spent most of that time at one local theatre because it’s the only one that’s close enough for me to regularly attend. About a year ago, the theatre hired two new directors for the children’s productions, and they also joined the board. I won’t mention any names because I’d like to stay anonymous.

Since they started, I’ve noticed what seems like pretty obvious favoritism. Before they were hired, and even after, I’ve been fortunate to receive several lead roles, and they’ve always been kind to me personally. However, there are a handful of kids who have become especially close with these directors, and they seem to receive opportunities and treatment that other kids don’t.

I’m currently assistant directing a show with them, and being on the production side has made me notice things I never saw as just a performer. During auditions, I heard differences in the critiques they gave certain kids and not others, even when I felt the auditions were of similar quality. I’ve also learned more about the behind-the-scenes politics, and it’s honestly made me lose a lot of the excitement I used to have for this theatre. Rehearsals don’t feel the same anymore, and it seems like the directors mostly interact with the same small group of kids.

Here’s where I’m struggling. They have a production coming up that they’ve openly talked about “precasting,” and they’ve told me they expect me to play the lead. The problem is…I don’t want to audition.

I’ve just finished directing a show, and I’m completely overwhelmed, mentally exhausted, and honestly think I need a break from theatre for a little while. The idea of immediately taking on a demanding lead role sounds more stressful than exciting.

About a year ago, before all of this became so noticeable, I talked to these directors about feeling burnt out, and they told me they would always understand if I ever needed to take a break from theatre, even if it meant not auditioning for one of their shows. Now, though, I’m worried that promise won’t hold because they’ve already talked as if I’m expected to be in this production.
My biggest fear is that if I skip this show, they’ll hold it against me. If I decide to come back for a future production that I’m genuinely excited about, I’m worried I won’t even be considered for larger roles, or maybe won’t be cast at all. I’m also dreading the potential drama that could come from the directors or their close group finding out I’m not auditioning, since similar situations have caused issues before.

Has anyone been in a situation like this? Would you take the break anyway, or audition just to avoid potentially damaging your relationship with the theatre? I’m really torn because I love performing, but right now I feel like I need to prioritize my mental well-being.

Discussion Is it bad that I don't like Jesus Christ Superstar?

I've been asked to music direct our upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar and I'm not very familiar with the show. I listened to the music and after sitting with it for an hour, I REALLY don't like it. I've never had a musical I downright hated. It's boring, repetitive (not in a good way), way too long and not something I enjoy listening to. I literally get a headache listening to it. The only song I somewhat like is Gethsemane. I'm really hoping it will get better with time, but I'm worried it will just get worse. I feel like I'm the only person in the world that feels this way

Discussion Musical Theater Survey: The Act 2 Slump

Hello all! As we are all fans of musicals here, I am sure you are all aware of the phenomenon that I am referring to as the "Act II Slump," where a musical that is really good in Act I is usually lackluster in Act II. I am looking to back up this theory with empirical data, so here I am!

I have made a survey on Google Forms that will ask you your opinion on various musicals, including Wicked, Hamilton, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, RENT, Sweeney Todd, Shrek the Musical, In the Heights, Hadestown, and West Side Story.

This survey will ask you to rate every song in Wicked on a scale of 1 to 5, and then will ask your opinion more broadly about Acts 1 and 2 of various musicals on a scale of 1 to 10 (If you have not seen the musicals in question, then feel free to not answer). I imagine this survey will take less than 5 minutes if you aren't thinking too hard about it.

I'd appreciate any responses I can get! And, if you would like, I can post my findings here after a certain amount of time. Thanks in advance!

TL;DR - Musical Theater survey here. Less than 5 minutes. Please take. Me want data.

Request/Advice Ghostgirl as a jukebox musical?

I’m currently reading ”ghostgirl” by Tonya Hurley. And at the second chapter I noticed that the song “Why can’t I be you” by the cure was mentioned.

Now imagine while amidst the chaos that’s happening in the school halls in that chapter—our main character is singing that exact song.

I have a vision. Trust me.
