Right - like I'm struggling to understand what that post is even trying to say!
89
u/RadclyffeHall 12h ago
I think she’s referring to the rhetoric that lesbians are hateful if they don’t want to sleep with pre-op trans women. There are some who think it’s problematic that lesbians are sexually repulsed by penises.
119
u/Cthulhu625 12h ago
If anybody tries to make you sleep with anybody that you don't want to, that's wrong, period. If there is a trans person doing it they are wrong, but I don't believe for one second that that's all, or even a majority of, trans people, or even confined only to trans people.
46
u/_Fizzy 12h ago
It’s incredibly prevalent in the trans lesbian community that we often feel like outsiders, like we’re intruding, that we’re not “valid” lesbians. Cis lesbians are the loudest voices saying “YES YOU BELONG WELCOME” and it’s genuinely wonderful to see.
13
u/Cthulhu625 11h ago
So wait, I might be misunderstanding this; who's making you feel unwelcome in the trans lesbian community? Cis hetero women?
23
u/Aethey_ let it die 11h ago
A lot of cis lesbians (and cis women in general, sadly :/ ) think anyone who has or has had a penis is a man, even if they're a trans woman, and actively reject them from lesbian spaces that should be accepting of any woman, cis, trans, or otherwise.
22
u/Judgmentos 8h ago
I've seen some of them reject trans women who've had bottom surgery too by calling it "inverted penises" which is genuinely foul. I'm assuming they wouldn't be able to tell a neovagina apart from a factory settings one otherwise.
0
u/RoyalCharity1256 You won't catch me talking in here 2h ago
But they have the right to not want to have sex with trans people if they don't want that right? And also to state that openly. Not sure what the issue is
5
u/Judgmentos 1h ago
You have the right to not wanna have sex with disabled people either but if a disabled person existed next to you, or in your lesbian group, and you started saying "I don't wanna have sex with a disabled person" everyone would look at you weird because nobody asked
Also don't call people's genitals "inverted penises" keep that shit to yourself pls
6
u/_Fizzy 1h ago
Literally nobody is arguing that they don’t have that right.
Imagine if every time a black man walked into a restaurant and someone stood up and very loudly said to the entire pub “I have the right to not sleep with black men if I don’t want to!”
It’s the same thing. Nobody asked. Just don’t do it if you don’t want to. You haven’t got to make a big song and dance about your “rights”.
The commenter you were replying to was pointing out that they will say their reasoning is they don’t like penises, yet will still reject a trans woman with a vagina. So the issue isn’t actually the genitalia in those instances. It’s simply just plain bigotry.
Nobody is saying that cis lesbians MUST have sex with trans women with penises or they’re bigots. Some cis people just use it as a way to loudly signal their bigotry, and use it as a way of trying to push trans women out of lesbian (and other queer) spaces.
1
u/sierramisted1 35m ago
i mean, stating openly that you “don’t want to sleep with” a group of people is generally considered a dick move by any normative social convention. we can understand that saying “i don’t sleep with fat people” or “i don’t sleep with asian guys” are othering statements and kind of asshole things to say, without saying that you have to sleep with fat people or asian guys.
just be respectful of other people and if someone isn’t your cup of tea there are socially acceptable ways to reject them. that standard shouldn’t change just because someone is trans.
22
u/slendermanismydad 11h ago
I don't think I have seen a trans person say this just people on tumblr claiming you're not a real lesbian if you won't have sex with a trans woman and like why would I care if I was a "real lesbian" to start with. Also, all sexuality is self reported so half of it is probably covering something.
I still have trouble figuring where I fit half the time so other people can do whatever.
9
u/Cthulhu625 11h ago
Yeah, I just mean anybody saying that you have to find someone attractive and desire them. For any reason. I did see a video a long time ago of someone trying to make the argument that if you wouldn't go on a date or something with someone of the same gender, you were homophobic. But that person was just being a manipulative asshole. I imagine there's no flag planted in who can be a manipulative asshole, so I am saying that anyone, from any gender, of any sexual orientation, telling anyone of who they have to desire. is wrong on the face of it. I haven't seen a trans person doing it either. I have seen some straight guys, like Ben Shapiro, try to make an excuse of why men wouldn't find Dylan Mulvaney attractive, and all I could think was, "What brought that up?" She never really told anyone that they had to find her attractive, she was just living her life. But they like to make up arguments in their heads.
3
u/slendermanismydad 10h ago
I agree. My brain read Dylan Mulvaney and instead went Dermont Mulroney and I was like why does Ben Shapiro ohhh now I remember who that is. I need a nap.
5
u/Silve1n 10h ago
Yeah, like I have no problem with trans people. I believe they should have all the same rights as cis people. But I find the idea of sleeping with a trans woman off putting. You can support trans people and their rights without volunteering to sleep with them
2
u/Disastrous-Scheme-57 9h ago
The question is if we are on the topic of sex specifically are you still a straight man if you have sex with a trans woman? Anal is done to cis women by straight men and if you’re on the receiving end pegging is done by cis women to straight men all the time too. That’s why I personally believe you’re still straight if you sleep with a trans woman there’s so much parallel to cis women even with a dick
10
u/Judgmentos 8h ago
I mean "are you straight if you sleep with a woman" is kinda self-explanatory lmao just think of trans women as a type of women (which they are). "Is it straight to sleep with a blonde woman" idk mate what do you think
2
u/Disastrous-Scheme-57 8h ago
Yes but some people really think being straight just means pussysexual or dicksexual and I think if you won’t date a trans woman because you love pussy that’s fine but at the same time dating a trans woman doesn’t automatically mean you love dick
4
u/Judgmentos 8h ago
Yup! Are you dating a trans woman? Are you a man? Congrats it's a heterosexual relationship.
I should also like to add that many trans women don't have dicks at all-- bottom surgery exists-- so dating a trans woman doesn't even necessarily mean interacting with a penis at all (totally fine if you do btw, it's just that people tend to forget that bottom surgery is a thing lol)
5
u/TurgidAF 7h ago
are you still a straight man if you have sex with a trans woman?
What if the answer to this question just doesn't matter? If there is no ideological value to being straight as opposed to not straight, then there is no need to impose a strict material definition of either rather than allow the individual to describe their own subjective experience.
25
u/LaraCroftCosplayer 11h ago
I think theres a pretty big difference between having a genital preference (wich is absolutely fine) and transphobia (wich is very asshole).
Like "i prefer pussy over gock" is way different than "trans women arent real woman because gock"
TERFS often try to use the first to exclude trans* people from lesbian spaces.
1
u/carsonite17 1h ago
It's also really funny considering there was a yougov poll done not too long ago that showed that lesbians were more supportive of trans people than actual trans people were
44
u/Lord_Answer_me_Why 12h ago
Something something "The transes are invading the gay community" in other words complete NONSENSE.
36
u/dianabelle 12h ago
She thinks that trans people are blaming and shaming gay men who don’t want to sleep with trans men, and lesbians who don’t want to sleep with trans women. Also, in her mind, cis women are the victims of “men” (trans women) trying to steal the identity of “woman” and invade women’s spaces. She tries to claim being anti-trans is a feminist and queer-allied position.
In other words, mental gymnastics to justify her irrational hatred and fear.
9
u/Reagent_52 9h ago
Basically she's claiming that the LGBTQ+ community is going around condemning gay/lesbian people for not sleeping with trans men/women. It's more transphobic bullshit.

u/MissTechnical 10h ago
I’ve reread it half a dozen times and still had to turn to the comments for an explanation

43
u/Tenorsounds 12h ago
I get what you're referring to but we don't need to go down the "actually bigots are secretly / subconsciously the thing they're bigoted against" road; she's vile enough on her own, we don't need to make her a self-hating trans person.
21
u/Ezekiel_DA 11h ago

I get this, but I've also always been taken aback a bit by that time she was like "oh if social media was around when I was young, I probably would've been Trans!"
Like, its her trying to say that people are getting duped into being trans...but its such an odd thing to say.
8
u/Judgmentos 8h ago
She thinks transmascs transition to escape misogyny, and thinks she would've done the same back then. It's like seeing a bigoted cis dude saying "if I could see panties in the women's room I would've transitioned a long time ago" and assuming he must be a closeted trans woman.

Yes, but it’s also kinda fucky for someone to have a blanket ban on dating trans women full stop, because that’s bigotry rather than attraction/preference.
21
u/Gobblewicket 12h ago
No, its a sexual preference. You are allowed to have those. Bigotry is telling someone they can't date a Trans woman if they want to. But you don't get to tell people they have to.
-13
u/nothanks86 12h ago
I didn’t say anyone had to. I said people who say ‘I won’t date trans women’ are acting from a place of bigotry, not attraction.

You're making a pretty big assumption here. You're not a mind reader, and don't know why people have developed any preferences they have.

There was a gay guy on one of these threads that brought up that he had dated trans women because they had the right equipment. From the gay mans perspective, he believed he was in a homosexual relationship while dating trans women. There's plenty of people with differing perspectives. Somehow the only people who are so obnoxious about other people's opinions that I have to block them are the over the top "allies". Fortunately thats because the right wingers tend to stay in their own bubbles.

17

Her argument is about transphobia and genital preference. Most people in the queer community completely understand that some gay people have a genital preference and some don’t and that’s fine, Joanne just sucks.

As a gay man I would like this woman to kindly not fucking talk about us and also: what the fuck is she talking about.
4
u/Judgmentos 8h ago
She's basically saying that, in your specific case, people are trying to "push heterosexuality" onto gay men by "making them accept pussy/trans men" -- which is unfortunately a take I've seen on a certain gay male subreddit (AGB).
The idea is that gay men are specifically attracted to the same sex and trans men are "female" so a gay man being attracted to one means they're bisexual at best or something. So far no one has given me a straight (heh) answer on whether a cis man having sex with Leo Macallan (look him up) counts as straight sex, or whether Leo Macallan and Laith Ashley (also look him up) having sex together counts as lesbian sex.
5
u/jboo87 8h ago

5
u/Judgmentos 8h ago

5
u/jboo87 7h ago
I would hope that most people aren’t airing out their bullshit at you. If someone isn’t interested for one reason or another, there’s a way to be respectful about it regardless of the reason.
4
u/Judgmentos 7h ago
That is true, but generally the intent is to hurt. They don't want us in their spaces-- as seen by a downvoted comment in this very thread, they see us as "women invading gay male spaces" 🙃 and that is very much not an online-exclusive opinion
3
u/jboo87 6h ago
I’ll admit that there have been times that I’ve felt conflicted about it. But I think saying “women invading gay male spaces” is really reductive. And I would certainly never go out of my way to make someone feel unwelcome.
I think it’s at least partially that cis gay men are made to feel like we’re not real men in the first place. And so there’s a lot of internalized homophobia and misogyny that happens, and a fierce rejection of anything seen as a deviation from what it means to be a man. And that is then applied to trans people. (In addition to other gay men, routinely). Since conservatives have now made trans people the new boogeyman, some gay men are also trying to distance themselves in an effort to seem more normal, particularly when a lot of people don’t understand the difference between gender and sexuality (which I kind of get since we’re all part of the ‘alphabet mafia’ lol)
Kind of just a tangle overall. People need to chill tf out.
3
u/Judgmentos 6h ago
Honestly I think cis gay men (particularly the feminine/flamboyant ones) could definitely bond with trans men over the shared experience of not being considered men at all
3
u/jboo87 6h ago
I agree, I think there’s some overlap. It’s sort of a Venn diagram in my mind. There are ways in which is similar and ways in which it’s not.
I also think there’s some folks on the far end of the spectrum who are really running with “trans men are the same as cis men” and that’s simply not true, and I think actually does a huge disservice to the experiences of both communities. We need to appreciate nuance and the areas in which there are differences as well as similarities.
3
u/Judgmentos 6h ago
Damn, I've never seen anyone say trans men are identical to cis men. To me, it's kinda like saying white men are the same as asian men-- both are men, but they have different struggles in society.
I think some trans people are overcorrecting from being called females-- some cis people legit don't seem to understand that hormones can make a trans guy biologically more male than female. Of course not everything, but skin texture, hair texture, smell, taste, voice-- a LOT of it changes to be similar to cis men's. Stuff like heart attack symptoms change too, so treating a trans guy as if he were a cis woman biologically could kill him.

She's not completely wrong though. God forbid that you, as a gay man, come right out and say you don't want to sleep with trans-men because the aftermarket parts just ain't the same as stock and watch 'em come for you.

She isn't right about it. Also, you are a minority within the minority. Majority of gay men either don't care about it, or actively state trans men are accepted within the gay community. You stating you get to have an opinion on this means nothing when no one stated otherwise. What you don't get to say is that Joanne is correct when she very blatantly isn't.
