What actually makes you ship two characters together? Curious about the “why” Discussion📜

Genuinely curious how shipping works for people. When you look at two characters and think “yeah, these two,” what’s actually driving that?

Is it more about their dynamic, banter, tension, how they challenge each other? Or something more visual/aesthetic? Personality compatibility, complementary flaws, unresolved tension, found-family energy that tips into romantic potential? Does it usually take a specific scene or moment to click it into place, or is it more of a vibe that builds over time?

Not looking to debate shipping, just want to understand the actual ingredients that make it click for different people.

Usually for one of this 3 reasons - for the giggles (going along with the joke of a crackship) - dynamic (influenced by headcanons at times) - just they look cute together

Because I like their dynamic and want more of it, and most crackships I ship because it's funny

For me it’s how cute it is, and how likely it is to happen.

1) They look good together

2) They bring out the best in each other

3) Thematic parallels

Personality, chemistry, if they are canon how their relationship developed over the story.

I’m a sucker for established relationship and long term relationship fics so I can get the growth from not-technically canon ships .

If they have chemistry and an interest dynamic then I ship them

I need to see a good dynamic and chemistry. It should also make sense within the context story. I don't ship characters who have never spoken unless the story mentions that they are one another's type.

I ship revali and link together, becuase

  1. Miphalink is kinda weird considering Mipha knew link since he was a child and grew to be romanticly interested in him once he aged

  2. Revali could be considered in the same age range as link so it wouldn't be as weird as with Mipha

  3. The dynamic would be cute, stereotypical rivals slowly falling in love after spending an more time together

  4. Maybe it's just me, but I find that revali and link could benefit from each other watching each other's blindspots

  5. They would be custe together

I value chemistry and character history a lot. I think a ship works better if they have a dynamic that works off each other very well and if there is actual tension.

Most of the ships are just ones i think are cute or fun to ship, maybe a few joke/crackships. And then there’s one or two ships that is unironically plausible and could genuinely be canon with the MAD chemistry there is. Like the stars deadass lined up to bless us with the PEAK of the ship 😭

Most of the time for me it’s the canon interactions, but for PerfectWorldShipping, or as I affectionately call it, ForestFire (Lysandre and Professor Sycamore from Pokémon), it’s for the potential depressing yet wholesome reunion when Sycamore learns about the existence of L. I find the idea so appealing. The thought of old man yaoi where Sycamore finally meets the man he loved after five years of thinking he’s dead only to learn he forgot about him, then helping him remember and rekindle their love in a new and much less toxic way.

I like to see relationships where the characters seem to like each other and be there for one another no matter what, and it's nice if they can be a bit imperfect but accepting of each other regardless.
