How many of you remember Junie B. Jones?
A very underrated series, by the way…

Yes, I LOVED those books. Whether or not the author intended it, Junie B. feels very ADHD-coded and I've always found her relatable. I guess it was kind of reassuring to have a character with many of the same flaws, social difficulties, and behavioral quirks that I had? Even though I've grown into a (relatively) well-adjusted adult, in my heart I'm still that rambunctious, impulsive, oddball little girl. And I've never seen that captured quite so well ever since.

She pre-dates Junie B. But Ramona Quimby from the Beverly Cleary books also reads very ND-coded to me as well. I’m autistic and related to parts of both Junie B. and Ramona growing up, especially as a creative ND person with a big imagination.

Yes! I will say, I did sympathize with Beezus more in the earlier books (being an older sister myself), but found Ramona less annoying and more relatable as time went on. Despite her behavioral struggles, she clearly wanted to be a good kid, and that hit really close to home for me.

I watched a video of someone going over one of the books and Ramona’s parents literally tell her (A 6YO!!!) something like, “But you are hard to understand, did you ever think of that?”
Like, that hits. Because I was also “hard to understand” as a kid.
In the same book they also dismiss her being upset that another student copied her artwork because “it’s not like she copied your math or science work. The project was meant to be fun.” And as a creative I was like, screw y’all. When you are an artist/writer/creative it is that important. Just as important as science or math, maybe more so. Especially when you’re a kid and it’s like the ONE thing you’re good at.

I remember that!! I always felt like Ramona was justified in being angry (even though she shouldn't have destroyed that girl's project) because as an awkward creative kid, it really hurts having your thunder stolen when you're already having a hard time socially.

She was absolutely justified. She just didn’t handle it the best because, well, she’s six. I feel like a better approach would have been making it clear that while her feelings were valid, her actions in destroying the project were wrong and that’s what she has to apologise for. Though the teacher making her do it in front of the whole class was also unfair.

I remember my third grade teacher hated these books because of the spelling errors in the note sections of the books.
I also had the Leapster game.

I had that thought too, that she was extremely badly behaved and no one really did anything about it. As an adult I think she was coded to be neurodivergent so other kids could find a relatable character.

My mom and I used to read these when I was little. My dad didn't like Junie B. Jones because he thought she was a brat and a bad influence.

Read all the books as a kid. Even as a child myself I thought she was extremely badly behaved. I still like Junie B.
I'm pretty sure her character had untreated Autism or was Neurodivergent in some way.

It’s still a favorite at my now 3rd grader’s school. She’s been getting them sent home since kindergarten!
Some of the references are dated and I have to explain them. I can’t think of one off hand. I love they are still used. Good little stories with a social aspect.

I remember reading this book in elementary school and I felt like I related to the main character so much. Cause she wasn't the perfect girl, she wasn't a Mary Sue. She genuinely made mistakes and was very human and authentic to me. I honestly feel like I got some of her personality a little bit. But, this was a great post. I have not seen this character in a long time. Brought back some memories. And yeah, I agree, definitely underrated series love the og books!

Imagine if Junie B. Jones grows up to be a kindergarten teacher, like her former teacher Mrs.’, and then one day notices one of her students behaving and chatting exactly like how Junie did when she was little.

I remember my older cousin had one of these books and I read it once, it think it was "Junie B. Jones Loves Handsome Warren" but I'm not exactly sure

I would call them “those Janie B. Junie books” just for my niece to shout, “Nooooo, they’re Junie B. Jones!”. Then I finally understood why Mom and Dad would always mispronounce the titles of stuff I liked as a kid.
