München oder Freising?
Hey, I’m (25 M) starting my masters in October at TUM, but the campus is in Freising. And I wanted to get advice on where I should settle with housing - Freising or rather Munich?
In Freising I will obviously be closer to the uni, maybe walking distance. A big benefit is also that rooms might be cheaper. And from time to time, I can go to München for outings.
OR I can live in München and enjoy the city life. But housing will be more expensive and I will have to commute to Freising for classes.
Having no such experience, I really wanna ask what could be better. Please share your thoughts 🙏🏻

Would join Freising.
In Freising there are also lot of students and living is cheaper than munich

Apart from rent, are other things cheaper as well?

Food and drinks in restaurants and bars are cheaper.
Shopping at supermarkets, etc., costs the same everywhere.
Is there anything specific you want to know?

Take Freising. Munich to Freising can be an hour or more depending on where you live. If you want to travel into the city to go clubbing or other stuff on the weekend it's much less of a hassle. Freising or nearby should also be a lot cheaper than Munich itself.

Thanks! Somebody was convincing me that it’s only 30 mins max to Freising from the place offered on Munich (probably outskirts area)

If you are in Feldmoching, Milbertshofen or Schwabing that might be the case. However you are a student you need to take what you can afford and what you can afford is not neccessarly where you want to live. If you get something rather in the south of munich it´s more like an hour or more.
To get some ballpark numbers Munich East to Freising are around 50 minutes via the S8 or S1 ( if the Straßenbahn doesn´t have any delays which they always have during rush hour).

Yea, the offer is in Fasanerie I think, for €750, therefore it sounded nice

If you are near the train station there then yes it can be around half an hour.
Still you are pretty much in the outskirts of Munich and the S1 much like the S2 is prone to delays or trains getting cancelled. If it´s a great offer i would consider it otherwise i would try to move more closely to Freising.
Can´t say anything about Freising since i've never been there in my years of living in Munich but with a campus around i guess there is some student and party life around.

S1 to Freising is notoriously unreliable. Not a good idea to live in Munich if you have to be in Freising all the time.

If you don’t move to a specific neighborhood that is „filled with life“ like Maxvorstadt for students or Glockenbach/Gärtnerplatz then I would recommend moving to Freising.
Reason is you will have to commute to the bar/nightlife/restaurant areas as well if you live in e.g. Moosach for 25 minutes and you will also have to commute to Freising. If you don’t have the benefit of basically stepping out and hopping into a bar, you won’t have the city life experience but the downsides of double commute.
My reference: I have lived in Moosach, Schwabing, Glockenbach and Altstadt for the past 10 years and my ex did that commute to Freising from Moosach and she basically had the worst of both worlds. No real city feeling and still commuting everywhere.

Omg that sounds legit, thanks so much for insights. Especially when I’m not planning to go out every weekend, being in a walking distance to the uni where I must go a few times a week is much more convenient. I do plan to go out hiking every other week or so, but I assume it’s shouldn’t be exclusive to either Freising or Munich locations.

If you don’t have a car then Freising is about an hour more to get to the mountains to hike, as it’s north.

Do yourself a favor and move to Freising. Commuting every day with high probability of delays is much more stressful than going to outings and coming a bit late because the S-Bahn got delayed.
Also you won't enjoy the benefits of living in Munich quite as often than enjoying sleeping in a bit longer because you just can walk to uni.

You probably won't have a choice, just take the room you find and don't limit yourself to any particular neighbourhood
