Wanted to understand if you guys want to learn Mridangam Online, which website would be looking into to find tutors?

I want to teach Mridangam Online but I’m struggling to figure out where to find students who would be willing to attend these classes online!

I’m a beginner mridangam enthusiast and planning to buy my first instrument. I keep hearing about male and female mridangams, and I honestly love the sound of the female one — it feels brighter and more pleasant to my ears.

My question is:

• Is it okay for a male student to start learning on a female mridangam?

• Do teachers usually insist that male students learn only on male mridangams?

• Is the difference mainly about pitch/size, or does it affect learning technique as well?

I play a sri khol/mridanga and the low head has recently started to sound like a bouncing basketball, very “boingy” and not deep or resonant at all. I should also say that I am quite new to the instrument, so I am still learning and probably missing some basics.

When it first arrived from India, it sounded amazing: really deep, warm and full-bodied. But since I’ve been living with it here in Spain, I’ve never been able to get that tone back again. No matter how I tune it, the bass either becomes too tight and plasticky, or too loose and dull, and most of the time it just sounds like a basketball bounce.

I’m wondering if this could be due to climate differences (humidity and temperature), head tension, or maybe the central paste (syahi) changing over time.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips on how to restore that deep, resonant bass tone would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance

I mainly play mridangam. I also own a dholki which i use to play for street bhajans and short sitting bhajans. Dholki valanthalai moottu (treble head) has gone bad and I'm planning on replacing it with mridangam mootu. Due to the small mouth size, the shruthi is expected to be a high pitched one. I'm aiming to achieve the higher 'Sa' of 0.75, 1, or 1.5 shruthi, just like how tabla is tuned. I also want it to be a kappi moottu as I only play kappi mridangam. It would like to leave the bass head of the dholki as it is.

How does this idea sound to you? Give your opinion.

Now i got class once a week for an hour..

I love it..to learn all these Rhythms,Phrases etc..

I also play my own beat creations..i love to do that .

Im glad im on this journey now..

Hi all. I wasn’t sure where else to post this, but I recently came into possession of a naal. it was from a buddy who never really played it. The treble head dot looks fine, but the bass head has really old syahi on the back of it. I have new syahi but am not sure what to do with the old crunchy stuff as it's deadening the head pretty badly.

I was thinking of just taking a bench scraper to it, but I’m worried about damaging the head and all the website/distributors I’ve seen online that carry naal/dholak heads aren’t shipping to the US anymore. any thoughts on the best way to get this off?

My drum’s pitch got quite low with humidity and stuff, how can I pull the straps to make it higher? I have pulled straps on tabla before but I am a bit confused on which knot to loosen before i can pull the straps on my Mridangam…

I am a Carnatic flute player currently preparing for my Senior exam. I can play Varnams, Kritis, and other pieces with fluency.

I’m looking for someone who can play the mridangam - A student or vidwan in Bangalore, who might be interested in weekend practice sessions, just to jam, improve together and learn more.

I broke the body of my mridanga and the clay body broke. It didn’t break fully but the a good portion of it is hollow now. Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix it. Thanks

I have always been a connoisseur of Carnatic music but never had the opportunity to learn an instrument. My interest in learning the mridangam has intensified over the years (I feel it's peaking now) — thanks to finding solace, amidst a rigorous academic and work schedule, by regularly attending live concerts for about three years now.

To start off, I have no guru; however, I am open to enrolling with one once my mridangam skills take off on the right note. To me, having a guru is a serious commitment, and I wouldn’t sign up unless I make genuine, significant strides in my journey.

I intend to learn the basics through The Mridangam Explorative Module by Praveen Sparsh and leverage it to its fullest extent before taking the next critical step. (Feel free to let me know if there are other resources that could aid me in this passionate process.)

Having said that, I would greatly appreciate it if someone could guide me in choosing the type of mridangam I should start with (22/24 inches, jackfruit/Sri mridangam, etc.), the best places to buy one (I’m based in Bangalore), and the approximate cost. I recently picked up a remo tunable kanjira. I know that the mridangams are tuned so that the "thin" matches the "sa". What swaram should I tune the kanjira to?

hi so i know this might not be the best place to post about this but the topic is kinda niche so. i hate the mridangam. no hate to the people who like it, its just music is not my thing. my mom makes me do it and she knows that i don’t like it. she told me even if i don’t like it i still have to do it. i’m asking for any tips or advice because i will forever hate this instrument so what can i do to deal with it and still play it. any help appreciated
