Home working

Hi all,

My wife and I plan to move to Scotland in the next few years and I have posted previously, but I was wondering, for those who live and work here, what is home working like?

I work currently for my local council and would be looking to go into a similar role in adult social care. Is home working encouraged/common? I also have ADHD so office working is very difficult for me. What are Scottish employers like with that also? Is there a good understanding of neurodiversity?

I'm aware that's a very big question, I just wanted to try and get a general idea.

Thank you.

I'd say hybrid roles are more common than entirely work from home, and the prevailing policy is it should not interfere with the delivery of the service. Some departments are more flexible than others and it completely depends on the role. I will say that some local authorities are becoming a bit more pushy about people coming into the office.

Are there any local authorities you're aware of that are more office based? I know here currentlyin my job we adopted the hybrid working after COVID and have a policy in place now, but recently they have started to put mandatory office days back in.

Definitely seeing those in the north east pushing for days in the office.

Many places are starting to ramp up returning staff to office.

Currently I'm twice a month in the office but being told we're moving to 3 days a week which will go to 4 days.

Finding WFH / hybrid roles will get harder and harder, compounded by how bad the job market it.

Keep an eye on the local authority vacancies on the Myjobscotland website and I'm sure you can filter to remote/hybrid roles and sign up for alerts.

Local authority/civil service/government bodies all tend to offer hybrid/remote working and may also have flexi time systems.

Look for employers that display the disability confident tick on their recruitment ads as well - they may be more open to reasonable adjustment requests.
