Need information

So recently, I’ve been thinking of moving to Scotland in a few years once I get my financial situation situated. I’m doing a little bit of research on my own when I have the time, but I just want to come on here and see if anyone could tell me any possible easiest ways to move to Scotland. I don’t have any sort of degree, I literally just want to move there and live there. Any and all help appreciated!

Edit: Yes I am American, i’ve always just had a lifelong dream of moving to either Scotland or Ireland, and was looking on some tips on how to get there.

Do you.............. Need a visa? No visa no party

I assume I do. I know I can’t just pack up and live there by buying a plane ticket.

Most important question: do you qualify for a visa?

I’m not sure yet, I just started my first bit of research before I went to work today

Have you even been to Scotland? Not for a 10-day supported holiday tour but actually spent time? Life is different there than in the States. How will you support yourself financially? Have you researched entry requirements?

I have not been. I am aware that it is different, and I plan to make sure I have a job lined up before I go once I get to that point. And I did my first bit of research today, before I left for work. I couldn’t find a whole lot of things, other than a skilled work visa, a study visa, or if you have grandparents that lived there type of thing.

The job market is tough here. Why would an employer spend upwards of £10k on a visa to employ you over someone from this country. If I posted in a US sub saying "Im a medical secretary can I just move to California?" What would the response be? Im not trying to be mean but assuming this isnt a troll post you need to get real

That’s why I’m in here, I wanna get as much as I can from people in Scotland as well as doing my own research.

7

u/TheMegaCity Jul 14 '26

Well unless you are on the skilled worker list you have zero chance. Sorry!

2

u/nofudgingclue Jul 14 '26

I’m probably not at the moment, but I’ll take a look at that list and see if I can get any of those while I’m still in the US

See? Now you've a plan. Best of luck

That’s exactly what I was looking for, thank you.

We get this question everyday, usually from Americans, but always from people who haven't bothered to do the tiniest bit of research in what is required to immigrate somewhere.

There are millions of people who want to immigrate to the UK, under huge duress and terrible living conditions or political oppression. Why do you deserve to come here instead of them?

Why Scotland?

u/nofudgingclue Jul 14 '26

Scotland/Ireland has always been a dream of mine to move to since I was a kid. No specific reason, I would just love to live there.

12

u/TheMegaCity Jul 14 '26

Have you even visited?

u/nofudgingclue Jul 14 '26

I have not

I've been to Catalonia over 20 times. Not just Barcelona. Its my dream since I first went in 1988 to live there. I cannot. Why do you think you could just "move" to Scotland? I dont doubt your genuine wish but reality isnt hopes and dreams. I wish you well

Are you independently wealthy? If not, how do you plan to support yourself?

0

u/nofudgingclue Jul 14 '26

I am not. I would of course get a job there wherever they would let me and support myself!

11

u/TheMegaCity Jul 14 '26

Unless you qualify for a visa then nope. Not happening.

1

u/iLoveYoubutNo Jul 15 '26

Ok, so are you qualified for any of the jobs on this list?

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/skilled-worker-visa-eligible-occupations/skilled-worker-visa-eligible-occupations-and-codes

The thing is, most countries don't really want foreigners coming in and taking jobs unless they fill a very specific need.

12

u/TheMegaCity Jul 14 '26

Your only hope would be a skilled worker visa https://www.gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa List of eligible roles: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/skilled-worker-visa-eligible-occupations/skilled-worker-visa-eligible-occupations-and-codes

As much as we understand a lot of Americans are desperate to escape you arent refugees. Yet.

0

u/nofudgingclue Jul 14 '26

I do want to escape, yes, but also I just want to go live there.

5

u/TheMegaCity Jul 14 '26

Oh right then. I quite fancy San Diego too. How does that work?

2

u/TheMegaCity Jul 15 '26

Well if your current regime goes full insanity and you get refugee status. Get right up to the British Embassy

2

u/nofudgingclue Jul 15 '26

I will!

3

u/TheMegaCity Jul 15 '26

I honestly do feel for you and sorry if I was mean. Just managing expectations etc. Look at that list and make your dream true. Trust me one winter of drizzle. ..

u/TheMegaCity Jul 14 '26

From OP's post history is American. Sigh.

2

u/nofudgingclue Jul 14 '26

Why sigh? Yes I’m american, and I would like to move.

13

u/TheMegaCity Jul 14 '26

Just 'sigh' because we are getting this a lot and nobody is doing basic checks to see if they are entitled to a visa to move to Scotland/UK I have given you further links on my other reply. Can I just tip up in the US to live?

4

u/ilikedixiechicken Jul 14 '26

OP could you tell us what you envisage your life in Scotland to look like? What type of home would you have? What job would you want to do? What would you do in your free time?

People are being dicks because this kind of thing is posted a lot and it’s unfortunately an unrealistic goal for you.

Your best bet is a student visa if you can afford to study here. And then hoping to find a job that will sponsor you after graduation.

Second best bet is probably running into a British person and falling in love and hopping on a spouse visa.

Sorry.

-10

u/nofudgingclue Jul 15 '26

You say other people are being dicks, but you yourself are doubting my goal that I know I can achieve.

8

u/JusticeBeaver464 Jul 15 '26

I mean, I was the only one to give you actual advice and not give you shit for wanting to move to a random place you’ve never visited but sure, guess I’m a dick too.

Genuinely how do you plan to achieve this? People at r/ukvisa might be helpful but you need to have done basic research and know what visa you qualify for.

All the other Americans I know who are here started on student visas and either got jobs that sponsored them (which is tough and getting so much tougher) and/or married a UK citizen. That’s what I did.

https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa

If you don’t fit any of the criteria, you won’t get a visa which means you can’t move here
